Congregation: Having been led, as we believe, by the Spirit of God, to receive the Lord Jesus as our Savior and on the profession of our faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, we do now in the presence of God, angels, and this assembly, most and joyfully into covenant with one another, as one body in Christ.

Congregation: We engage, therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, to walk together in Christian love;

Congregation: To strive for the advancement of this in and holiness; To give it a ace in our affections, prayers, and services, above every organization of human origin; To sustain its worships, ordinances, discipline, and doctrine;

Congregation: To contribute cheerfully and regularly, as God has prospered us, toward its expenses for the support of a faithful and evangelical ministry among us, the relief of the poor, and the spread of the throughout the world.

Congregation: In case of difference of opinion in the church, we will avoid a contentious spirit; and if we cannot unanimously agree, we will

cheerfully the right of the majority to govern. We also engage to maintain family and secret devotion; to study diligently the Word of to religiously educate our children. To seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintance; to walk circumspectly in the world; to be kind and just to those in our employ and faithful in the service we promise others, endeavoring in the purity of heart a good will exemplify and commend our holy faith;

What is our pledge to one another?

Congregation: We engage to watch over, to pray for, to exhort and stir up each other unto every good work; to guard each other's reputation; not needlessly exposing the infirmities of others; to participate in each other's joys and with tender sympathy, bear one another's burdens and sorrows.

Congregation: To cultivate Christian courtesy; to be slow to give or take offense, but always ready for reconciliation, being mindful of the rules the Savior in eighteenth chapter of Matthew, to secure it without delay; And through life, amid evil report, and good report, to seek to live to the glory of God, Who hath called us out of the darkness into His marvelous light;

Congregation: We moreover engage, that when from this place, we will as soon as possible, with some other church where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God's Word.

Leader:

May the God of peace who brought again the dead, the of the sheep with blood an eternal covenant even our Lord Jesus, make us perfect in every good thing to do God's will, working in us that which is well pleasing in God's sight, Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever, AMEN.

Brother Rodney Granger is a descendant of the Southall family. His uncles, Willis, Garland and Leroy Southall, were part of the founding members of First Baptist Church

(Taylorsville). Rodney was born and reared in Portsmouth, VA to the late Winford and Jessie Southall Granger. He attended

Sunday School and the late Deacon John Henry Johnson was his teacher. At the age of 12, he was baptized by the late Rev. Dr. T. Melvin Steele. There has always been a Southall-Granger family member of New First Baptist Church (Taylorsville).

During his high school years, he was an outstanding football player at I. C. Norcom High School. After graduation, he attended Norfolk State University (College) for two years. He later married his high school sweetheart, Erma Sutton, by classmate Rev. Dr. Tommy Steele. To further his career goals in the technology field; he received computer technical certification from Computer Learning of Tidewater. He was employed with Honeywell Inc. and continued his career in Boston, MA and Phoenix, AZ.

After returning to Portsmouth, they were blessed with two sons, Rodney Jr. and Jamaine. He rejoined and continued to attend New First Baptist Church (Taylorsville). All through the years, Rodney has worked in his community. During his sons’ early years, he coached football and baseball teams with the Wilson Little League, coached with the I. C. Norcom Football Team and served as the President of the Concern Football Parents. For twenty plus years, he was the spotter for the I. C. Norcom football games. In 2009, he was inducted into the I. C. Norcom Athletic Hall of Fame. After 42 years in the technical field, he retired as a System Analyst at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and now enjoys traveling, riding his bike with his brother, working out in the gym and working on computers. He continues to serve his community as the Treasurer of the Lake Cavalier Corporation.

He is a very active member of New First Baptist Church (Taylorsville). He has served as chairperson of Men’s Day and The Future Focus Team; member of the Pastoral Search Committee, Men’s Ministry and Men’s Day Choir. He currently provides services to the Information Technology (IT) Department as well as the Tutorial Ministry. He is always readily and willingly to assist with other ministries. Brother Granger’s favorite song: “Count your Blessings, Name Them One by One” and his favorite scripture: James 2:17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. (KJV)
