SPECIAL NOTES!!!!NO NUTS TUESDAYS & THURSDAYS (a repeat for new singers and veterans who missed it previously)

Our Tuesday/Thursday Tenor who is seriously allergic to nuts (all kinds) is with us again this season. As in past seasons she strongly requests no one (in any section) bring anything to choir that contains any type or amount of nuts. Even the smell on someone’s breath can trigger an anaphylactic reaction with drastic negative results. Please keep this request firmly in mind and make our GHC Tuesday practices an absolutely nut free time zone!

ADMIN TEAM NOTESSHIVON

A warm welcome to all our new choir members, welcome back to all you returning singers, especially to those we haven’t seen for some years!

If you haven’t been singing much lately, remember to take good care of your voice, and to avoid singing too loudly, especially if it’s feeling at all strained.

Ginger Tea is a great drink to bring to choir, either hot or cold. It is delicious, stimulating and soothing for the throat, and a great aid to digestion.

No recipe is required - simply slice up a bunch of fresh ginger root (one-half cup sliced ginger would do well with 3-4 cups water), add water, and boil for at least 20 minutes, lid on the pot. If it's too strong for your taste, add more water, If it's not strong enough, boil it a little longer - maybe with the lid off, so it evaporates a bit. Add honey to taste. It keeps well in the fridge for days. A nice way to take care of your voice!

~ Shivon

DENIS

It's lovely to be working with you in the singing of some favourites from past years that celebrate some of our wonderful guests. We will have some new songs for you to sing, but for the next week we'll continue working on these old favourites, some of which you may not have sung before yourself:

The Song Will Never End: in remembrance of our vocal coach Deborah MillarBright Angel: celebrating the visit of Susan Osborne in 2008Radha's Song: which Ann Mortifee has sung with us several times before, most recently in 2006Every Road Leads Home: celebrating the visits of Shari Ulrich in 2010 and 2014How We Love: Beth Chapman's wonderful song, which we last sang in 2013, when we sang it for herLet's Give Peace A Chance: written by Ann Mortifee, we sang it with Ann when many of us went over to sing for the Dalai Lama talk in Vancouver's Orpheum Theatre in 2004. That was a blast!

I hope that you are enjoying all these great songs!

~ Denis

GLORIA

Welcome to all the new singers who have already registered for this session. Also welcome back some of you who are returning after being away for awhile. Looking forward to singing with you and our 20th Anniversary Concerts in June with Guest Artist Ann Mortifee. This is my 14th year in the choir and the day I joined was one of the best decisions I ever made.

Proceeds from this solo show at Hermann’s Jazz Club will go to the Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Centre Society’s efforts to assist Syrian immigrants. Society executive director David Lau will introduce the event.

“On his ten albums, Michael Waters is probably best compared to Leo Kottke, John Fahey, and John McLaughlin. His guitar work plays in uncharted rhythmic spaces, transforming the listening experience into both a personal and deeply shared musical journey.”

What: Michael Waters: Syrian Refugee Benefit ConcertWhere: Hermann’s Jazz ClubWhen: Sunday, Feb 28, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. (doors at 6:30 p.m.)Tickets: $15 to $18 (reservations at hermannsjazz.com)

GHC NEWS & BUSINESS

REMINDERS RE: BINDERS

Put a label with your name and possibly your phone number on the outside of your binder. That will reduce the chance of someone picking it up by accident and increase your chances of getting it back quickly if they do.

** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** **** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** **

NAME TAGSIf you’ve got them please wear them even if you have been in the choir so long that everybody should know you. It not only makes things easier for our new singers, it also makes things easier for memory challenged people like me.

Keeping your name tag in the inside pocket,of your binder or with its cord locked in the rings, so it is available to wear every time you come to choir is a good idea.

There will be new name tags available starting next week at choir for those that don’t already have them.

A PARKING REMINDER FOR TUESDAY & THURSDAY SINGERS

Please do not park in the “residential parking only” areas. There is legal parking available on Superior, St. Lawrence (beside the park), Kingston and Erie streets.

There is also plenty of parking for $1 for two hours in the lot on St. Lawrence by Fisherman's Wharf. Be aware, however, that some choir members who have parked for over 2 hours have received tickets. Watch your timing or buy 2 tickets.

Of course, car pooling is always great! (SATB in every car). Make good use of this newsletters GHC Car Pooling Available & Wanted section.

** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** **** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** **NAMASTE

New members…are you wondering what the “Namaste” spoken by many of us at the end of each evening means? If so check out this video link that came to me via CorUnum’s “Yurt News” email

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41xuS84tYAM&feature=digest

As you will see it means many things that all add up to us honouring each other!

(1450+ people)

The Choir Community Issue (Part 2) Submissions accepted from all members of our choir community. Submission Deadline......Wednesday midnight of each week that this section is issued. There is an overview of how to use this issue in your binders. Full details are available on our web site’s Choir Life: Using Our Newsletters page.

** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** **** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** **

WHY THE “SUBMITTED BY…” LINES?

This past week a member of our community submitted an item for our next community issue on behalf of a non-member.  Due to some the item's contents that I considered questionable I suggested that she re-consider her submission in light of the "Responsibility For Submissions" section of our Newsletter's “Submission Guidelines” which starts with the following paragraph....

It would be impossible for the GHC administration to check out the veracity and value of every item submitted to the Community Issue of our newsletter.  With that in mind we ask you to please note that the appearance of any item in this newsletter does not constitute an endorsement by the GHC of whatever that item offers.  The responsibility for each item, therefore, rests with the person named in the “Submitted by…” line.  That is the reason it is there. (two more paragraphs)

If you have submitted items to our newsletter, or think you might do so in the future, and the forgoing is new information to you I recommend that you review the full Submission Guidelines which can be found on our site's Using Our Newsletters page.
