Choir Seasonal Gift MarketEvery Fall season in the weeks prior to our holiday break we have a series of worthy causes that hold fundraising sales during the break at HNC & GHC Practices. All the money raised goes to the causes so you get to pick-up some unique gifts and support great community action at the same time. Double Duty Dollars!

Gorgeous Guatemalan Scarves And Shawls For Sale…

…plus some NEW handwoven  items, or please CONSIDER MAKING A DONATION AS A CHRISTMAS GIFT, instead of exchanging gifts with family, work or friends, and make a huge difference in a Mayan family's life.

Last winter, with input from  parents, teachers and community leaders,we established a much needed Learning Centre and Library for San Antonio's children, who were falling behind and dropping out of school, as early as Grade 6.  The learning center/library has been a huge success with almost 600 visits  for learning assistance in September and a steady increase in children who come to read from our small library.  We are also continuing with our lunch program for the very poor elderly widows.

We will be selling our beautiful scarves at GHC and HNC for 2 weeks:

Nov 20, 21* & 23rd (All GHC + * HNC)

The brain is...a tangled mess of habits, traits, outdated processes and inefficient systems.  In many ways the brain is the victim  of its own success; it's evolved over millions of years to reach its current level of complexity, but as a result it has accrued a great deal of junk, like a hard drive riddled with old software program and obsolete downloads that interrupt basic processes. Bottom line: the brain is fallible.

Page 3:   · Web viewSubmissions & Queries Our WebSite Un-Subscribe here

It may be the seat of consciousness and the engine of all human experience, but it's also incredibly messy and disorganized despite these profound roles.

Opportunities to Sing

An Open SWAT Against Nuclear Weapons

Another chance to hear these important talks and to sing in support of the speakers.

This is a mid-day event for the wider community with Mary-Wynne Ashford and Dr. Jonathan Down as guest speakers. They will be sharing information and actions we can take on the prohibition of nuclear weapons.

Talk title: North Korea and United States: Empty Rhetoric or Nuclear Threat?

We will combine this with a GHC/HNC SWAT, performing some singalong songs.

SWAT leader: Cathy Baker.  All singers welcome to join.

Please RSVP so we can update you as to warm-up and start times and anything else as needed.

The songs we will be doing are:Humbly We Walk Here Peace Is - w/Cathy on guitar (video),Da Pacem DomineLead With LoveOne More Step - w/Cathy on guitar I Believe That Peace Will Come - w/Cathy on guitarLet Us Go Out

The brain regularly edits memories to make them more flattering, whatever the rationale for doing so, and these edits and tweaks can become self-sustaining.  If we remember and/or describe an event in a way that slightly emphasizes ouir role in it (we caught the biggest fish on a fishing trip, rather than the third biggest), the existing memory is then effectively "updated" with this new modification...And this happens again every time it's recalled.

Dean Burnett (paraphrased from Idiot Brain: What your head is really up to)

****************************************************************GHC Choir Sectional Schedule

There will be Alto and Bass sectionals all three nights the week (Nov 27, 28 & 30) from 6:45 to 7:30. Please be there a bit early so we can warm up and be singing repertoire starting right at 6:45.

The following week (Dec. 4, 5 & 7) will be the Soprano and Tenor sections' turn.

Home sectionals & Cross Sectionals can, of course, happen anytime you want to host one. If so start thinking about appropriate dates over the holiday break or in January. There will be more on that in the December 1st Community Issue or you can find it now on our site’s Choir Life: Home Page in the What Are Sectionals? section.

What have we learned so far about the human brain?  It messes with memories, it jumps at shadow, it's terrified of harmless things, it screws with our diet, our sleeping our movement, it convinces us we're brilliant when we're not, it makes up half the stuff we perceive, it gets us to do irrational things when emotional, it causes us to make friends incredibly quickly and to turn on them in an

instant.  A worrying list. What's even more worrying is that it does all this when it is working properly.

JUST FOR FUNA reward of laughter for reading this far

The Tomato GardenFrom an email forward received from Peter Meyer

Soundings & former GHC Bass

An old man lived alone in New Jersey. He wanted to plant his annual tomato garden, but it was very difficult work, as the ground was hard.

His only son, Vincent, who used to help him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and described his predicament:

Dear Vincent, I am feeling pretty sad, because it looks like I won't be able to plant my tomato garden this year. I'm just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. I know if you were here my troubles would be over. I know you would be happy to dig the plot for me, like in the old days. Love, Papa

Page 11:   · Web viewSubmissions & Queries Our WebSite Un-Subscribe here

A few days later he received a letter from his son.

Dear Pop,Don't dig up that garden. That's where the bodies are buried. Love, Vinnie

At 4 a.m. the next morning, FBI agents and local police arrived and dug up the entire area without

finding any bodies. They apologized to the old man and left.  Soon after that the old man received another letter from his son.

Dear Pop,Go ahead and plant the tomatoes now. That's the best I could do under the circumstances.Love you, Vinnie
