YES GHCers - THERE IS CHOIR THIS COMING MONDAY!

Anytime a statutory holiday falls on a GHC choir night we still practice.  GHC Members are of, course welcome to opt out, and perhaps come to one of the other nights that week, if they wish

DO YOU USE A TABLET? WANT TO TRY DIGITAL SHEET MUSIC?

Increasing numbers of choir members are replacing sheet music with the app ForScore on an iPad or some other tablet. . Besides the obvious advantage of saving trees, plus saving Gloria some copying and distribution effort, here are some reasons to give this option a try...

Accessible - add your name to the email list and you will receive current musicPortable - you have all your music with no bulky binder and no paper shufflingMarkable - you can add notation, change words or notes, highlight, underline etc.Navigable - links can skip you right back to the chorus, page one, or wherever you need to be Playable - the app includes a pop up pitch pipe and piano keyboardSupportable - help from other choir members is close at hand.

If you would like to give this a try, contact Myrna Fisher (Tuesday Alto) by email: [email protected]

REGISTRATION PERIOD TIE-OFF

Now that the official registration period is over I may not be at choir every night. My schedule will be varied but in general I will be at each session at least once every two weeks. (ie Monday/Thursday one week and Tuesday the next or some variation on that theme)

If you have fees to hand in and I am not there you can either hold them until the next time you see me or you can give them to Gloria (or to Shivon if Gloria isn’t there).

My schedule for the next couple of weeks is…Tuesday Oct 11Monday Oct 17Thursday Oct 20

If you have information to pass on to me or questions to ask feel free to contact me at [email protected] or 250-920-4160 (9 to 9 daily).

~ Bill

CHOIR POTLUCKS COMING

Our potlucks will be a little later this season than usual but they are coming. Good food, good company and a fun sing-along.

Thursday   Nov 10, Tuesday    Nov.15 & Monday     Nov 21

Mark your calendars folks. More info later.

NO NUTS TUESDAYS & THURSDAYS!!!

This is a heads-up for new singers and a reminder for veterans. It will run for the first few weeks of choir while we get everyone registered)

Our member who is seriously allergic to nuts (all kinds) is with us again this season. Please do not bring anything to choir that contains any type or amount of nuts. In fact please don’t eat nuts before coming to rehearsals or concerts. Even the smell of nuts on someone’s breath can trigger an anaphylactic reaction with drastic negative results.

Please keep this request firmly in mind and make our GHC Tuesday and Thursday practices absolutely nut free time zones!

SPECIAL NOTES!!!!!! (Cont.)

NAME TAG INFO

New people…Gloria will be bringing do-it-yourself name tags to choir for the next couple of weeks. Please write your first name on yours in large letters to make it easy for us all to get a handle on you.

Veterans…Be sure to bring, and wear, your name tags for the benefit of the new members and memory challenged folks like me.

Keeping your name tag in the inside pocket of your binder, or with its cord locked in the rings, so it is available to wear every time you come to choir is also a good idea.

** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** **** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** **

REMINDERS RE: BINDERS

Put a label with your name and possibly your phone number on your binder. That will increase your chances of getting it back quickly if you happen to leave it somewhere other than choir. Inside or out, but out is best as makes it less likely for anyone to pick it up by mistake.

** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** **** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** **

CURRENT SINGERS ONLY SECTION INFO

I have been getting questions about when the practice files will be accessible in the Current Singers Only section of our web site. I always send out the passwords to access that section once there are files posted. Usually in the 4th or 5th week. This season it will happen a little earlier in the 3rd or 4th week once the registration roundup and record keeping is all finished.

GHC & HNC CAR POOLINGWANTED & OFFERED

To arrange car pools you can announce your request/offer at break time at choir (GHC or HNC).  You can also email me at [email protected] with your name, contact information, where you start from, whether you need a ride or are offering one and which choir you are in.  I will put a listing under the appropriate Car Pool heading for you in the next newsletter.  Don’t be shy about repeating your

request in subsequent weeks at choir or in the newsletter if you don’t connect the first time.

GHC MONDAY CAR POOL WANTED FROM/TO CORDOVA BAY

I want to re-join the choir this year after being away for a while.  I drive but am a little hesitant about driving at night and more hesitant about driving in bad weather, particularly on the winding roads of the Saanich peninsula, as the Monday group on West Saanich Road is the closest to me.

I would like to connect with one or more members from the Cordova Bay area, or who could go through it without going too far out of their way, to arrange mutual car pooling.

I am open to a regular arrangement with one person or connecting with a few people I could call on in rotation when a ride is needed.

If either possibility interests you please contact me at either [email protected] or 250-480-5192

GHC THURSDAY RIDES WANTED TO/FROM MAYFAIR AREA

I am a new singer with a physical challenge that limits the amount of walking I can do. For the time being at least I will be going mostly on Mondays and have a ride that night. I would, however, like to also go on Thursdays sometimes. If you would be willing to give me a lift from time to time please contact me at 250-384-1159.

If more than one of you responds I will spread my Thursday ride request around.

COMMUNITY NETWORKINGDear choir members and supporters of SOLIDARITY LESVOS VILLAGE

Thank you for your concern and inquiries about the refugee situation on Lesvos Island, Greece. My sister, Nicole has informed me that after the fire at Moria Camp many refugees were without shelter and relocated elsewhere.

Inside the Moria refugee camp on Greece's Lesbos island

(12 photos from the CBC News World site)

The camp had double capacity of people and not enough food. Of the 150 unaccompanied children who were evacuated, 96 were transferred to SOLIDARITY LESVOS Village (formerly named PIKPA). See more information in their newsletter.

I am doing a small fundraising campaign to help them with buying food and basic supplies. I am still selling cards at Global Village in Market Square and Breathing Space yoga studio, in Brentwood Bay, or by contacting me ([email protected]). All donations are used to provide for the refugees.

Page 7:  · Web view> Walk in for readings through the shop or book an appointment by calling: James Bay Coffee & Books 250 386-4700 or emailing jbcoffeeandbooks@shaw.ca James Bay Coffee

You can donate directly to their Greek bank account (info at he bottom of their newsletter) or through me at choir, or by mailing a cheque in my name (Claire Ebendinger, 914 Verdier Avenue, Brentwood Bay, BC, V8M 1C1).

WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM CHOIR FRIENDS

Update: Katrina has asked me to pass on her thanks to those choir members who have already donated in response to the information below that is a repeat from the last community issue.

The following is an extract from an email sent out by GHC Soprano Katrina Pavlovsky to her personal contacts (such as yours truly).

I am fundraising to go to Toronto to present a workshop on Chair Dance at the First National Symposium on Dance and Wellbeing.  I am working with GoFundMe to achieve this. Wishing you a good autumn. With warm wishes, Katrina

Katrina has just returned to the choir and it occurred to me that some you will probably remember from the Fall

2007 to Spring 2009 seasons and might be open to helping her along her way. For a great photo of her and more information about the chair dance and what she is trying to achieve be sure to at least visit her GoFundMe page.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN ELECTORAL REFORM?

As many of you probably are aware the federal government has formed a Special Committee on Electoral Reform. Since that is an interest of mine I have created a web site to present a new electoral system that I would like the committee and Canadians in general to consider.

I have submitted the proposal to the committee formally and sent information to each committee member directly

If you are interested in checking out the art of the possible regarding a new electoral reform idea feel free to visit www.AbsoluteRepresentation.ca

Play:SLEEPING GIANTSCreated & performed byInmates at William Head Prisong

This original play runs from Oct 7 to Nov. 15 so this information is a bit time sensitive since tickets can only be purchased in advance.

I saw the performance last year and haven't forgotten about it. I've seen rehearsals and been working on costumes this year and have been changed. The level of vulnerability, beauty and dreaming these men are diving into is magical.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON SACRED WRITING CIRCLES ARE BACK!

with Junie Swadron, Psychotherapist and Writing Coach for 22 years

The afternoon is about sharing from our hearts, it’s laughter, it’s friendship. It’s learning to stop judging our work, it’s sipping tea. It’s finding our voice and feeling safe to speak our words out loud. It’s about being authentic and kind. It’s about music and moving our bodies during the break. It’s about creativity and It’s about catharsis  allowing the writing to become our wise teacher. It’s poetry and It’s prose. It is short stories and drawings that we write from.

In short It’s a love fest both on and off the page!
