Thought for this week….by Rev. Nicola Callen

It is widely thought that we, as a nation hesitate to talk about death, and it is often said that we should do this more. My just 6 years old grandson told his Mum the other day that he thinks it is better to say that someone has “passed away” than that they have died! He’s learning! Goodness knows where that came from!

I usually say that I do not think that I am afraid of death, but that I do not want to go just yet.

I like life, and want to spend time with family and friends for as long as possible, and I want my grandchildren to know me well and remember me.

But I have begun to say what kind of funeral I would like: I like it where some people have known about their impending death, and have their service before and listen to what people have to say. I am egotistical enough to think about that as an option! But- I am not sure that I want to know if I am so ill that it is terminal.

There are so many things around death that can be considered. I have made a will, but now want to add things to it.

We can be fearful in so many ways about death and so avoid thinking and talking about it, but we can conquer some of our fears by doing just that. If you have them, and have family and friends do think about sharing with someone. Or with one of your brothers and sisters in Christ. It may be a help.
