Thought for this week….by Rev. Jordan Ling

Prioritizing prayer

Praying. We do it in Church, we do it for those who are ill, we even take it up for our football teams – it’s an easy activity to engage in is it not? Perhaps for some of us prayer comes easily, we rush to make the time to deliberately be attentive to God’s presence, to share with God our thanks and our worries and to listen to his still small voice. I imagine far more of us intend to pray and yet find all manner of

distractions; the hard to reach cupboard needs cleaning, ‘if I run my errands I will be more ready to pray with no distractions’, ‘I am too tired/stressed/ distracted I will watch some TV to calm down and then pray’.

I am sure that, like me, we can all find very important things to get on with that ultimately distract us from space, in prayer, with God - And yet, when we find the time, when we are able to focus on the presence of God, all of our important tasks become much easier to carry out, there is a calmness that travels the day with us that only prayer can produce. Phillipians 4: 6-7 says “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Surely we all hope for a life filled with greater peace? If so, let us see if we can get praying more. Resolve not to let distractions fill pockets when we would rather be praying. If we find it difficult to pray for ourselves, pray for others; you may find the prayer of blessing for friends on the back of the pew sheet a helpful guide. Perhaps we may find that Jesus catches us and holds just as we need him to when

we ask him to help out. Perhaps our prayer will help us to recognize those times when he has answered our needs before we even ask. God is good like that – all the time.

Much of our prayer life is like that of the little boy who found himself losing his balance in a tree that he had climbed. He cried, “Help me Jesus;” but when his

pant leg became caught on a branch, He said, “Never mind Jesus. My jeans caught me.”

Special notices and upcoming events for all…….Benefice Harvest Appeal: Send a Cow - As a Benefice, we have decided to support the Send a Cow charity for Harvest this year. Send a Cow has a new project, working in the part of Uganda with which our deanery is linked. They will be working with children who have been orphaned through the HIV/AIDS epidemic, teaching them life skills which will enable them to grow and eat nutritious food, attend school and have hope for the future. For more information, please have a look at their website: https://www.sendacow.org/project-orphans. On their Harvest Sunday's, the churches of St Aidan’s, St John’s and St Michael’s will be taking a money collection to support this charity and the work they are doing in Uganda. The churches will also continue to support our local charities through collections of non-perishable food items, which will be collected during our Harvest services. Thank you for your support. The next ‘Prayer and Praise’ will take place on Tuesday 11th October at St Mary’s Church starting at 7.30pm. Everyone is warmly welcome! The rehearsal for the musicians is at St Mary's on Sun 9th Oct at 8pm.

Uganda Link - The City Deanery is exploring new and different ways of nurturing our strong links with the Diocese of Central Buganda and West Buganda in Uganda. We will be having an open Deanery Uganda Link meeting at St John’s Church on Wednesday 12th October at 7.30pm. Please do come along to find out more, see what’s going on, or share any thoughts you might have. Please talk to Michelle if you have any questions. Tickets are now available for The Big Sing! The performances take place on Fri 14th at St Mary’s and on Sat 15th at All Saints both starting at 7.30pm.
