JACKIE JOYNER KERSEE AWARD TO TOP RANKED OZARK YOUTH
Jackie is known throughout the world as the best female athlete ever- the winner of six Olympic medals, three of them gold; the current world-record holder in the heptathlon; the one-time world-record holder in the long jump; and an All-American basketball player. She grew up in East St. Louis in a house
“little more than wallpaper and sticks.” Her parents were poor teenagers when they married. She made her first long jump pit in her backyard from borrowed playground sand. As she climbed the dizzying heights of international and Olympic competition, she married her enormously successful and controversial coach. She battled many hurdles along the way and ultimately, she united her experience and determination to achieve the most meaningful victories of all- those that shape and build lives beyond the field. Jackie is a role model for us all and a very important part of the lives of many she strives to help achieve success. (Excerpts are from the book A Kind of Grace.)
Criteria: Top ranked male and female athlete in the Ozark Association as ranked by Athletic.net or US Track and Field News as of September 1 of the current year.
Winners: Rayvon Allen and Danielle Gregory
SAM GIAMBELLUCA- YOUTH VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD
Sam Giambelluca became a member of the Ozark Association in 1962. The following year he was appointed the association’s Junior Olympics chairman, a position he held until 1990. He was appointed National AAU Junior Olympics Track and Field Chairman, a position held for sixteen years and each year served as referee of the Junior Olympics National Championships.
From 1963 through 1990, he hosted the Ozark Association Junior Olympics Track and Field Championships in Poplar Bluff where each year it attracted some 1500 to 2000 boys and girls
representing preliminary meets held throughout the association. Seven graduates of this program went on to become members of the United States Olympics teams. Best known of these athletes is Jackie Joyner. Sam also held the association’s age group, women and men championships in Poplar Bluff for many years.
On three occasions, 1966, 1972, and 1974 Sam held the Women’s Junior National Track and Field Championships in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. He also hosted the first AAU Junior Olympic National Basketball Championship in 1972. Sam also served as the Ozark Association as Chairman of Men’s, Women’s and age group track and field for several years.
Sam was selected to the Missouri Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1982 and to the Poplar Bluff Sports Hall of Fame in 1986. In 2001, the new all-weather Poplar Bluff High School track was named in his honor.Criteria: Outstanding volunteer for the Ozark Association. WINNER: Martise Scott
MICHAEL CARR AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING COACHING
Background: Michael L. Carr was a product of St. Louis Public Schools. As a young man he had a strong desire to provide a safe environment for young people in his community. The Royal Knights Athletic Association was founded in 1959 as a result of Michael’s intense desire to help young people. The Royal Knights programs were open to all youth from the very young to the eighteen year olds without regard to race, creed or color. Although the program primarily consisted of African American youth, the program always welcomed all participants. Many of the athletes came from low to middle class families. The Royal Knights Athletic Association programs helped provide stability for its athletes and the community.
Mike loved all children. He devoted his entire life to the children of the Royal Knights Athletic Association. He was a very positive, honest and understanding person. Michael was a father and in later years a grandfather figure to the children. He never lost sight of their needs.Criteria: Outstanding coaching with a focus on devoting life to children. Also must have characteristics of being positive, understanding and honest. WINNER: Angie Miller

This was Michael’s second year with the track team. Michael’s events were the 800 meter run and the 4 x 800 relay. Michael was so excited about being able to participate in his first National Junior Olympics, he even got a part time job cutting grass to earn his money for his trip.
