Designed to t within the urban context o the Los AngelesCivic Center, the new, 491,000-square-oot Los Angeles PoliceDepartment (LAPD) Headquarters eatures both physical andmetaphorical connections to the surrounding community.Setbacks, necessary or security reasons, are captured asopportunities or integrating the site at the human scale: aone-acre park, a public art program, and a plaza relate topassers-by and engage them with the headquarters. TheLAPD Headquarters project was recognized in 2009 with theAmerican Institute o Architects presidential honor award orBuilding Team o the Year. The project has achieved a LEEDGold certication rom the U.S. Green Building Council.

Building Engineering

Our architects partner with our building engineers, who design

the structural, mechanical, electrical and communicationssystems o high-perormance acilities. AECOMs Manitoba Hydro Place project in Winnipeg,Manitoba, Canada, earned the 2010 National ProjectAchievement Award rom Engineers Canada, the countrysnational engineering organization. Built as the headquartersor Manitoba Hydro, the provinces utility provider, the695,887-square-oot (64,650-square-meter) building eatures

a variety o energy-ecient technologies, including a doubleacade to reduce heating loads by providing a buer toextreme outdoor temperatures; a displacement ventilationsystem that supplies the oce space with 100-percent reshair; radiant slab heating and cooling; a solar chimney; anda geothermal heat pump system or ground heat exchange.AECOM provided mechanical, electrical and plumbingservices or the project.

Economics

We perorm quantitative and qualitative market conditionassessments as they impact our clients proposeddevelopment projects. We help our clients rene their ideas,and work with planners and designers to inorm the economicsuccess o projects. We also assess projects socioeconomicimpacts and shape plans that build economic resilience andoster social equity.

The Four Seasons at Hualalai resort on the Big Island oHawaii is one o the most successul resorts to open in recentyears. We completed more than 10 assignments regarding

market and nancial potential or Hualalai. During the early1990s, we were instrumental in persuading Kajima to shitrom a high-density/high-rise resort concept to the ultra-upscale, lower-density resort concept that was ultimatelyselected. Our ollow-up studies or Hualalai indicate thatbuyers responded avorably to Hualalai because the resortsimage and amenities were careully crated to match buyersdesires. We identied and thoroughly documented this clientinput through a series o market analyses, ocus groups andpersonal interviews.

Energy

At AECOM, our energy proessionals are catalysts or achanging industry. With a ocus on today and a vision or theuture, we seek out energy rom the cleanest and mostecient sources. We are experts in transmission anddistribution and develop plans that incorporate wind andsolar energy; hydropower and dams; and thermal, geothermaland nuclear energy.

When Caliornia State Universitys San Bernardino campusin the United States was looking to expand while cutting itsenergy use, the chancellors oce turned to AECOMs energy

experts. With insight into eciency and carbon management,we worked with the university to develop and implement anambitious plan that included adding two 1,200-ton chillers, a1-million-gallon chilled water thermal energy storage tankand a 2,400-ton cooling tower. These innovations saved thecampus US$1 million in energy costs during the rst year and were recognized by the Association o Energy Engineersas the 2009 Energy Project o the Year.
