I N T R O D U C T I O N

Hello, I’m Jacqueline Jeremy, a student at TAFESA enrolled in a six month Certifi cate III in Graphic Design.

The course has taught us how to use and apply many of the features of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat Pro, as well as introduced us to industry standards, communication, and procedures to ensure quality and workplace health and safety issues.

Each of our assignments has been unique, but many of the procedures to follow are similar for each job, starting with a brief outlining what the basic end product will be, researching material for ideas, creating mood boards, selecting fonts and colours, and sketching a few basic layout ideas for the client’s consideration.

Poster Design

Typography was one of my favourite subjects. Selecting fonts that suit the project takes time and care but the right font has a major impact on the fi nal product so the effort is worthwhile.

The poster on the left was created to promote a fi lm festival of Classic Romantic Comedies. Our brief was to create a full colour poster with Adobe Illustrator using type and simple shapes.

In my research I found a font called Hugs & Kisses which I thought was perfect with its elaborate swirls. I chose University Roman for the “laughter” line, ScriptMTBold for the heading at the top, and Roboto for the line at the bottom. I enjoyed working with the fonts to ensure the letters in each line complemented each other to provide balance and fl ow throughout the page. The heart shape was added to enhance the message.

For colours I began with yellow for happiness, hope and sunshine. Yellow also attracts attention when placed on a dark background. I looked for strong contrast colours and felt the blue refl ected the heartache side of the theme. Red was chosen to represent the human heart and to provide contrast.

the theme (above)

Logo Design

S T A T I O N E R Y

My client for our stationery project was a copywriter.

For the fi nal logo I again concentrated on typography and shapes using Adobe Illustrator. I deconstructed the client’s initials and added punctuation to refl ect an important part of a copywriter’s job.

The client mentioned a liking for navy blue but the teal option was preferred. I agree that it was more suitable, giving the feel of sophistication, wisdom and energy

The basic square I thought was appropriate because a copywriter needs to be aware of grammar and punctuation rules, fi tting inside the box; but thinking outside the box, represented by the diamond, is also important so that the copy produced is creative, interesting and has a spin that no other copy has.

For interest I added a texture to the square box which, while subtle, I think gave the logo some depth as did the shadows on the initials.

An optional part of thetask was designing anemail signature.

This project involved designing a four colour DL-sized folded brochure and A5 fl yer, with a dummy mock-up of the brochure to show the client and printer where the folds would be.

The client supplied text and images, and requested that four specifi c images be used.

After sketching two concepts for each of the brochure and fl yer, the client selected the preferred designs. Several font combinations were also presented to the client, who chose Copperplate Gothic for the headings and Palatino Linotype for the text.

The map on the back fold of the brochure was recreated using Adobe Illustrator.

Layout for the brochure and fl yer was created using Adobe InDesign. I chose the woman holding a glass of wine as the feature image because the woman’s smile was captivating, inviting the reader to sample the wines.

Free Choice Design

In the image making assignment we were asked to colour correct and remove the scratches on a transparency scan supplied by TAFESA using Photoshop’s features. The transparency was an image of a tall ship (upper right).

We were also asked to take photographs of places where we could superimpose the tall ship to produce an image of the tall ship in a realistic but unexpected location. I took many photographs in various places, settling on the wetland areas in a new suburb of Adelaide—see the duck pond (lower right).

Once happy with the colour correction and clean up (below), the ship was extracted from most of the background and placed over the duck pond image.

The fi nal imposition (left) shows the tall ship sitting on the duck pond, with it’s sails refl ected in the water.
