The military topographic geometrical maps of the Venetian Dukedom, draftedunder the guide of the general Anthon von Zach between 1798 and 1805, are acomplete and reliable document and the starting point of our analysis of the territoryof Motta di Livenza.They bear witness also to the crisis of the land due to frequent rainfalls andfloods of the rivers Monticano and Livenza. The clay soil, preventing water topermeate, produced mud, which hampered the travels on the main roads. Thissituation could last till April, which is why all winter long people preferred the boatalong the river Monticano to go from Motta to Gorgo (6 km). The maps show aland moulded by water.From the XIX century the foreign governments launched the cadastral assessments,the first one, which started during the Austrian occupation, was made bythe French and finally completed by the Austrian, it is known as the Napoleoniccadastre and dates back to the 1811.

The area of the town of Monastier (Treviso) has been studied comparing thecurrent regional technical map with the map of the Geographic Military Institute(1923) and the ones of the Napoleonic (1810) and Austrian (1842) land registersto highlight changes.The original map of 1810 cannot be consulted and the Venetian State Archivedoes not have photos of the eastern part of the area, beyond the river Meolo.As far as history is concerned the Benedictine abbey of S.Maria del Pero, whoseproperties occupied a large portion of the territory, influenced the dimension andthe exploitation of the land, witness the latifundium marking the area, an exceptionin the countryside surrounding Treviso.At the end of the XVI century the decline of the Abbey together with the crisis ofthe agriculture – which hit the entire Po Valley in the first half of the XVII century –marked a gradual subdivision of the latifundia.The papers, which bear witness to the setting up of the municipalities of Monastierand Losson (1806), show that a large part of the territory was uncultivated andbecame wooded or flooded land. Moreover two settlements were founded alongthe river Meolo, which passes through the area from north-west to south-east withlarge bends, and whose flow has been changed, witness the comparison betweenthe Napoleonic and the Austrian land registers. The first settlement was foundedby the Benedictine Abbey, the second one is the current area occupied by themunicipality of Monastier.

The area of Zero Branco has been studied comparing the current regional technicalmap with the map of the Geographic Military Institute (1940) and the ones ofthe Napoleonic (1810) and Austrian (1842) land registers as well as the descriptionsgathered by Anthon von Zach (1798-1805) to highlight changes.As regards history the area has not changed from the topographic point of view,whereas as far as landscape is concerned a gradual loss of wooded land to takeadvantage of agriculture can be seen. The only real changes over 150 years arethe highway nr. 155, highlighted in the Austrian cadastre, and the bypass of thecity center, shown in the map of the Geographic Military Institute. The other greatchanges which can be seen in the regional technical map happened later.In all the maps the river has a more meandering flow compared with today’s one.its bights would be regulated after 1940.
