    What is IMT-Advanced within t he IMT family?

    IMT-Advanced syst ems are mobile syst ems t hatinclude new capabilit ies t hat go beyondthose of IMT-2000. They will:

    provide access to a wide range oftelecommunication services including advancedmobile services, supported by mobile and fixed

    net works, which are increasingly packet -based. support low t o high mobilit y applicat ions includingfixed applicat ions and a wide range of dat a rat es inaccordance with user and service demands in

    multiple user environments. provide for high qualit y mult imedia applicat ionswithin a wide range of services and platforms,providing a significant improvement in performanceand qualit y of service.

    Key feat ures of IMT-Advanced

    a high degree of commonality of functionality worldwide whileretaining the flexibility to support a wide range of services andapplications in a cost efficient manner;

    compatibility of services within IMT and with fixed networks; capabilit y of interworking with other radio access syst ems;

    high quality mobile services ;

    user equipment suit able for worldwide use ;

    user-friendly applications, services and equipment;

    worldwide roaming capability ; and,

    enhanced peak data rates to support advanced services andapplicat ions ( 100 Mbit / s for high and 1 Gbit / s for lowmobility were established as targets for research)*.

    ITU-R WP 5D Workshop

    22

    WP 5D plans to have a workshop for IMT for t hedecade 2010 -2020 in 2011.

    The workshop would focus on the topics related to arefreshment of t he vision and market forecast s that weredeveloped a number of years ago and t o make an assessmentof the current perspectives of the future needs of mobilebroadband wireless to be supported by IMT for the nextdecade (2010-2020).

    Considerat ion of t echnology evolut ion of t he IMT-Advancedtechnologies and a view of future spectrum needs could alsobe part of this workshop.

    The workshop should invit e expert views from the indust ry atlarge including the views of application developers, end-

    users, industry forecasters, and visionaries.
