How did it all begin?
It all began with a story.
Why do Hindus have Diwali?

Long, long ago in India, Prince Rama was sent to the forest with his wife, Princess Sita and his brother, Prince Lakshman. The people of Ayodhya were sad to see them go.

Near the forest lived the very wicked Ravana. He was a demon-king with ten heads and he captured Sita and took her away.

There was a terrible battle but, with his magic bow and arrow, Rama killed Ravana and rescued Sita.

Hindu people believe that when Rama defeated Ravana it was a great victory of good winning against evil and so we celebrate the victory!

At the end of the story Rama went back to Ayodhya with Sita and his brother, Lakshman. It was very dark and people lit lamps to light their way home.

That’s how the Festival of Lights began and why Hindus light up their houses at Diwali.
