Why are we having such a large amount of hands and finger injuries?
• Large workforce in field (exposure ) - about 7000 people
• Nature of job :• repetitive actions, manual handling• hazardous tools (tongs, wrenches, tubulars, winches, wire ropes etc.)
• Cost Constraints on Operations / Technological Constraint :• cannot have fully automatic rigs, operations depend upon human input
• Local staff employment (social commitment to the Omani people)• many green hands• complacency by experienced hands
• Fatigue and Work Stress.• long hours of stressful work (lapses in concentration)
• Summer Heat :• human body is tired and susceptible to injuries due to heat stress.,
fatigue and dehydration. Statistics show increased no. of LTIs in summer• Removal of PPE in the summer heat

hands and fingers have more nerve endings per square centimeter than any other part of your body ?
hands and fingers also have more pain receptors than any other part of your body. That is why finger injuries are more painful than similar injuries to other parts of the body.
injuries to hands and fingers are the most common causes of lost time accidents in industry today.
consequences of these injuries may vary from a small dressing to permanent disability .

To avoid these incidents, we alreadyhave the required ‘tools’ to help us!

Our Motive :To go home from work in the same condition as we arrivedZero tolerance to Hands and Finger injuries
The benefits are for all to see!

• Enhanced Site Supervision : Supervisors, Toolpushers, DSVs ensure that Unsafe Acts and Conditions are continuously recognised and eliminated, by engaging staff in a two way communication. Never underestimate the effect of an enthusiastic supervisor, you can make a big difference
Our Tools, the way forward !
1.The Hearts and Minds Way : All staff are to be made aware, in a compassionate way that injuries harm them and their loved ones. No job is as important that it should be done in manner which can cause harm to the worker.

• Behaviour Based Safety : Understanding the behaviour of
our staff as to what causes them to commit unsafe acts – which result in accidents, will help us introduce remedial actions in accident prevention. “It will not happen to me” syndrome can be eliminated
• Working Safely : Encourage workers discussions on their work related Safety Issues, the incidents they had so that similar situations are avoided,
this depends on your enthusiasm

IF IT IS UNSAFE – DON’T DO IT !
2. Empowerment to stop UNSAFE WORK : This powerful tool has been in the
Company for a long time but is often confused with Dupont’s STOP Programme.Lack of commitment, fear of punitive actions hampers its success. Infact this is best way to avoid potential accidents. It is your right and duty to stop work when you consider the job to be unsafe, management will back you on this

3. STOP Programme : This should be used primarily as an Accident Prevention tool. After the required training staff are aware of STOP observation techniques to be carried out at worksites – where most of the Unsafe Acts & Unsafe Conditions prevail. Any unsafe work is stopped and rectification process is started immediately, similar situations are averted in the longer run. STOP database trends help in identifying problem areas so that suitable action is taken.

3. Effective Toolbox Talks : This is the key to ensure that all the hazards associated with the job i.e hands and finger injury hazards are well understood by staff. Necessary precautions are taken
to avoid potential situations.
Our Tools, the way forward !
Toolbox talks will never be consistently of quality unless they are recorded, consider starting to record on your location!
An enthusiastic and well run TBT will prevent incidents

Summary
Because of the geographical location of Oman and the financial facts of life of the Omani oil industry we are not going to be able to significantly change the equipment we use or influence the yearly changes in climate
We have to rely on the actions and enthusiasm of people to prevent hands and finger injuries
The tools are in place to prevent hand and finger injuries, Its how effectively you use these tools that makes the difference. Efforts are required by supervisors and crews at the worksites to use these tools, commitment is required by all management to support the worksites by all means possible
