TRANSCRIPT

1 Mt Jnos Lrincz PhD Researcher, Keele University The relationship between personal values and energy efficiency A case study from Keele University 2 Keele University: Facts and Figures Source: Keele University UKs largest and most attractive university campus, with 617 acres of landscaped parkland, fields, woodlands and lakes. Although Keele is one of the largest and most attractive university campus in the UK, it is one of the smallest universities in terms of student numbers, with a genuine, friendly student and staff community. 3 Strategy Strategic Objectives To demonstrate environmental sustainability through innovation, good practice and ethical choices in all our activities To unlock the potential of the University Estate so that it underpins the attainment of our vision To share and provide the Universitys expertise in environment and sustainability to local, regional, national and international communities and partners Keele Universitys Strategic Aim: To develop an environmentally aware and sustainable outward-facing campus community 4 Green buildings are not-so-green because of people! One reason that some green buildings are not achieving their environmental performance is because employees, tenants and visitors are not doing their part to leverage green building technology, or to help the building with its conservation goals (William Grayson, 2011). 5 One powerful way to build awareness of resource use is to context employees actions in environmental and economical terms. There is a need to identify how to design control systems that meets end users requirements while minimising energy use. Together a building and its occupants form an integrated system in which people live their lives and emit carbon (Bell et al., 2010). 10 1 Heating devices Source: Stephenson et. al, 2010 Social aspirations Expected comfort level Environmental concern Respect for tradition Insulations House characteristics Energy characteristics Number of rooms heated Heat settings Hours of heating Maintenance of technologies Material culture Energy practices Cognitive norms The Energy Cultures Framework The Energy Cultures Framework 11 1 Barness Hall Accommodations Electricity Consumption 28 th of January - 24 th of February 12 1 Barness Hall Accommodations Electricity Consumption Cost 28 th of January - 24 th of February 13 Electronic Thermostatic Radiator Valve 14 Showerguard Shower Timers 15 Key Card Energy Management System Key Card Energy Management System 16 Poster Presentation 17 AKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank my supervisors Dr Sharon George, Dr Joanna Wright and Dr Zoe Robinson for academic guidance, scientific and technical support. My gratitude to Mr. Huw Evans and Mr. Martyn Wilde for their support in the preliminary phase of the project. 18 If you dont do anything else Your aha moment 1. BIG energy saving starts with understanding energy consumption behaviour. 2. System Approach analyses energy efficiency.
