The Squawk Box Bremerton Sail and Power Squadron
May 2017
Commander’s Corner
Bob Allen, S
As we turn the next page in the con-
tinuing story of United States Sail
and Power Squadrons and our
Bremerton Squadron, we get to see
where we’ve been and what we’ve
done. Your Bridge will be doing that
this summer as well as the planned
cruises to the San Juan Islands and
to the Gulf Islands of British Columbia and beyond. In doing this
we should be able to plan effectively for our near and farther
future. For when the Bridge members return we can travel
the path that will define our future.
I want to thank all of you for your multiple efforts these past
several years.The efforts of your Bridge, Cindy Mills, Treasurer;
Leann Derror, Secretary; our SEO, Kevin Pisani; also our AO
Jim Mills. Further accolades belong to especially Mary Bienek
for her care as our Chaplain, kitchen master and head of our
Annual Rummage Sale. Dale Finholm, our publisher of the
Squawk Box. Karn Miller, our kitchen chief of everything; Jean
Muenzenburger, our Web Master. And a special thanks to Rush
LaSelle for his kind guidance and direction, and being our new
SEO.
Of course, we are looking for help filling a few more volunteer
positions. These are positions requiring defined and limited
time and energy. They help make our squadron run just a bit
smoother. If you would care to know about them more or if I
kindly take you aside for a moment of conversation, you’ll know
more about them.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to be your Commanding
Officer for a second time, and, your continued support for this
new year.

D16 Annual Rendezvous and VSC P/C Gary Wade, P
Hello all, I hope this finds all well.
There are three things I would like to talk to you about; first, Vessel Safety Check/Meet and Greet event schedule, number two is the District 16 Rendezvous Docking Teams and third, the crucial need for commitment to help our squadron.

Providing the public this service is one of our, USPS, goals. We take this opportunity to educate both new and experienced boaters as well as inform them of the USCG safety equipment requirements and inspect their vessels for the same.
Below is the current schedule.

0900-1500 This year BSPS is in charge of the docking plan for the District 16 Rendezvous. The dates this year are June 23 – 25 at the Poulsbo Marina. As you would expect, Friday is the busiest day, Thursday and Saturday next, and round out with Wednesday. My plan is to have teams, each team will consist of two, of which one will have a handheld radio. Their primary purpose is to help arriving boaters moor up.There will also be one person speaking directly with the boaters as they arrive providing slip assignment/reaffirmation of slip assignment and relaying that boat and slip information to the team. I do not wish to overburden any one member so I plan to schedule teams in four hour shifts. There will be some overlap
to ensure a proper turnover and chow and water breaks. Download registration form on page 5 or from www.uspsd16.org. You can contact me via email at [email protected] or phone at (317)626-7440. Lastly but most undoubtedly very important, is commitment. The last few years have seen a decline in USPS membership. BSPS has not been immune. There are many reasons we joined the Power Squadron, many reasons we stay, and many reasons some choose to leave. For those of us who have decided to remain, I would like to make a request of you; take a moment and contemplate why you decided to stay. Our squadron needs, I need your help. I am a firm believer in sharing responsibilities. The more volunteers we have the more responsibilities are shared, and less of a load we each carry. Please take time and review the General Meeting, VSC/Meet and Greet and Rendezvous schedules; see where you can help. Thanks for your support in making BSPS successful. - Gary

FLAG ETIQUETTE P/C Bob Allen
In the month of May, the following days are observed at full staff:
Mother’s Day on Sunday the 14th and Armed Forces Day on
Saturday the 20th
Days observed at half-staff are Peace Officers’ Memorial Day,
Sunday, the 15th and Memorial Day, Monday, the 29th, at noon.
Please remember to raise briskly your flag to the hilt and then
reverently lower it slowly to half. There are two thoughts on how to
re-raise the flag.
Lower to base and then raise briskly to the hilt. Or simply raise
briskly to the hilt.
