On January 12, the staff from Maywood Public Schools attended The Art and Science of Teaching, An Instruction-al Framework for Growing Teaching Effectiveness. The conference was put on by Dr. Phil Warrick. He travels around the United States and puts on conferences for the Marzano Academy. Dr. Warrick had some great infor-mation on communication with students, establishing classroom routines, segmenting lessons, processing con-tent, and many other topics were discussed on that day. Our teachers came back to school with some fresh ide-as to implement in their classrooms. It was a very beneficial day for everyone. On the activity side, we have a lot of activities taking place, national FFA week Feb. 22-26, Spelling Bee Feb 25th, the speech team is competing in meets the next few weeks, MPCC building competition, and the basketball sea-sons are winding down. The students and sponsors have put in a lot of time and effort and I would want to thank them for their efforts. Spring activities will be starting soon. Girls and boys track and boys golf will be starting practice very soon. There are track t-shirts for sale. The order forms can be picked up in the office. Please get out and support the MHC Wolves. Maywood Pride! Jason Brown, Principal/AD

February 2016
On Tuesday, February 16th, the Maywood Junior High Quiz Bowl team headed down to Southwest High School in Bartley, Nebraska and put their brains to the test. Throughout the entire competition they battled hard, and came out with their guns blazing, constantly keep-ing their finger on the buzzer. Their focus was sharp and their eyes were on the prize. Heading into the final round of the round-robin style tournament the team held a perfect 8-0 record. At the end of the day, all their hard work certainly paid off as they earned a silver medal.
The future certainly looks bright for these young students. The stu-dents that aided in this valiant effort were comprised of Eli Hand-saker, Parker Johnston, Karlie Gerlach, Maci Sorge, Nolan Benjamin, and Matthew Jacobs. If you see any of these students please be sure to congratulate them on their success!

It’s that time of year when seniors are thinking about their futures.
Last month, Isaiah Smith was doing just that. He and Mrs. Phyllis
Johnson attended the “Set Sail” day at North Platte Community Col-
lege. Different speakers talked about setting your goals. Chris
Turner from the college spoke about getting your boat together and
setting your sights on your goals. He also wanted students to have a
support system in place for college and their lives. Dustin Elliott, the
Rough Stock Rodeo Coach at the college, stressed how important it is
to have a list of goals you have written for yourself. Create short and
long term goals. Look at those goals every day and change some of
them as needed. People don’t have to be attending classes to have
goals, they’re for everyone. A student from Mullen also talked about
the importance of goals. He had made some bad decisions earlier in
his school years and now realized that he needed to get his act to-
gether for his future. His motto was, “Set yourself up for success,” by
choosing goals in life. Everyone should have goals. The day was full
of good advice.
Congratulations to
all of the
Maywood
Honor Roll Students.
Great Job! Keep up
the hard work!

Maywood FFA News
Dedicated-one word to describe the members of the Maywood FFA Chapter. Those students preparing for spring CDE’s arrive at school at 7:00 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday mornings studying and looking for the next district title. Some members have already punched their ticket to compete at state and others are still working hard for that goal.
FFA members competed in the first set of spring Career Development Events (CDE’s) in Curtis on February 10th. The floricul-ture team of Marisa Foster, 1st individual, Bailey Brown, blue ribbon, Kayla Minary, blue ribbon, & Tate Hartley, white rib-bon, placed 2nd and will compete at the state contest in April. Members had to identify flowers and equipment used for floral arrangements, complete a general knowledge exam over floriculture basics, and create a bud vase arrangement. The livestock management team consisting of Bailey Brown, Bryar Gerlach, Tucker Hartley, Pake Johnston, Kaely Perkins, & Von Fritsche also competed. The team finished 7th in an event with tough competition. This is a unique contest as team mem-bers complete the entire contest together. Each team takes a general knowledge test over dairy, beef, sheep, swine, poul-try, & horses. Other components of the contest included milk tasting, feed identification, egg grading, breed id, leg confor-mation, body condition scoring, and wholesale meat cuts. Other happenings from the month of February included the re-view of State Degrees and Proficiency Applications. Bryar Gerlach received a gold rating for his proficiency application in swine production entrepreneurship. His application will be reviewed at the state level later this month. Proficiency Awards recognize the development of technical knowledge and skills that students develop through their Supervised Agricultural Experience programs.
Upcoming events for members include the next set of CDE contest on March 1st in Curtis. Teams that will be competing are nursery and landscape, vet science, and meats evaluation. March 4th, the Eustis-Farnam FFA Chapter will host their annual CDE contest with agronomy, food science, and meats evaluation. Students will also have the opportunity to attend the Ac-tivate & Leverage leadership conference in Kearney facilitated by the Nebraska State Officers on March 18-19. As always, if you have a special skill or would like to help in or out of the Ag classroom, please let any of the FFA members or Miss Arm-strong know!
Did you enjoy the chocolates and candies from our fruit sales this year? Wish you could get more meat and cheese? YOU ARE IN LUCK! 4 Seasons Fundraising is allowing our chapter to sell items online from February 19-29th. Students won’t be selling items door to door but will send emails out if interested. You purchase directly through the company on their web-site and the items get shipped directly to you. If you would like to order more goodies, let any FFA member know or con-tact Miss Armstrong at 362-4223. We can assist you with the ordering process.
Thank you to those who supported the Maywood FFA Chapter Annual Pork Loin Dinner in January!

We have had some exciting career opportunities happening here at MHS! On March 7th, 7 of our stu-
dents will travel to McCook, NE to a Community Career Day sponsored by McCook Community Hospital.
The students will choose sessions that they are interested in learning about in the healthcare field. Ra-
diology, Nursing, Physical Therapy, Surgery, and Pharmacy are some of the exciting careers explored.
The students will tour different departments of the hospital as well.
These next few months are filled with activities to keep our spring season busy here at school. On
March 16th a number of 9-12 students will travel to North Platte Community College Interhigh Day and
on March 30th to McCook Community College. The students will take tests and be involved in content
specific activities on the college campus. They have the opportunity to win scholarships and awards by
scoring in the top 3. Many different schools participate in these academic competitions, so it is always a
great experience for our students.
