Apart from great maternity benefits, Flipkart has rolled out a paternity policy as well for its employees. For the male employees, the company willgive 10 days’ paternity leave either before the child is born or within six months after the child is born. A hostelmate of new Google CEO Sundar `Sundi’ Pichai at IITKharagpur rewinds to life with the `boy’ who was once a favourite of raggers.
"There has to be something in the water".
This is a familiar refrain from those who had spent their years at Indian Institute of TechnologyKharagpur (IITKGP) as signed to Nehru Hall ofResidence, in particular between the years ’85 and ’93. It was within these years that the hostel housed three individuals, two of whom went on towin Magsaysay awards Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and prominent social entrepreneur H Harish Hande and became game changers inthe Indian socioeconomicpolitical sphere.
The third has been occupying the upper levels of Google management for some time now and was recently made the chief executive of what is oneof the most significant players in the internet space, something that impacts not just our work but almost every facet of modern life.

There wasn’t anything in the water except perhaps arsenic and bad bacteria.We all ingested both and, for the most part, survived. Nehru Hall, likeevery dorm in every college, has its share of people who went on to become captains of industry, achieved distinction in academia research, excelledin fields unrelated to their degree or have shown great social responsibility. However, these three individuals clearly had something within thatdrove them to achievements which were a cut above the rest.Beyond What Met the EyeIt was in 1989 that a young Sundar Pichai (Sundi, as he wasknown in IIT) arrived in KGP and was greeted by a group of seniors at Nehru Hall who were ex cited at the prospect of yet another ragging period.Yes, those were the days in which ragging was still the norm. New entrants arrived fresh from the station, dropped their bags and were immediatelyled to a roomful of “raggers“ who then proceeded to orient them in the ways of IITKharagpur. It was a bit of a miracle if one was reunited withone’s luggage that same day.
I recall Sundi as being someone who did not need much persuasion to jump on a table and do something absurdly selfdeprecating or lean out of abalcony and hurl choice epithets (at a senior’s bidding) at some unsuspecting passerby. Sundi thus soon became a favourite of the raggers,something that usually leads to fairly strong ties between the ragger and the ragged.
A Bag of Expectations
I don’t have much of a recollection of Sundi for the rest of the academic year, other than the everyday interactions that hostelmates routinely have.It does seem strange, in an impressive way, to think of that “boy“ as now being the chief executive of Google. The internet has changed the worldover the last decade and has contributed to significant gains in the lives of people in the developing world. However, I think that the jury is still outon how it finally plays out in terms of balancing inequality in today’s world, or how our privacy is protected as the “internet of things“ pervadesevery inch of space in our homes.
Google is going to be one of the companies that will play a strong role in shaping this development and for the foreseeable future, Sundi will be atthe helm deciding the course of action. I wish him the best in his efforts and hope that the camaraderie at Nehru Hall, resulting in empathy forpeople from various backgrounds and needs, weighs heavily on his decisionmaking. From the various writeups I have read about his managementstyle and his achievements at Google, this certainly seems to be the case.
The last recollection I have about him is from the end of my stay in IIT. I had brought a camera from home for a short while and one day I set offwith a group of firstyear students exploring various corners of the campus. It was a rainy day. We were definitely off the beaten path and the groupthat decided to make this trip included Sundi. I pulled out some of those pictures today and he looks fairly similar to pictures I see on the web. Littledid we realise that we were looking at a future chief executive, heading a company whose core services would have felt like something out of ascience fiction novel to all of us on that damp day in Kharagpur.

Women students of St Xavier's College, Mumbai will not be allowed to wear shorts at its popular annual fest, Malhar, this year. The diktat comesfrom the college's recentlyappointed principal, Agnelo Menezes, who cited security concerns while imposing the noshortsoncampus rule forMalhar's organising team as well as other female students.

The Malhar organising team, consisting of 1,200 students including volunteers, was informed of the decision in a meeting with Menezes on August4. St Xavier's, a Jesuitrun institution, has always been strict about dress codes for students, who are not allowed to wear shorts in college on regulardays. The previous principal, Father Frazer Mascarenhas, had made an exception for the threeday college fest except for those handling Malhar'spublic relations cell.

The rule, however, does not extend to students from other colleges who will be attending and participating in the fest on August 1516. Students didnot welcome the ban, calling it inconvenient. "Students who work on the logistics team, which handles venues, and the technical team which looksafter light and sound arrangements put in physical labour for long hours. Sitting from 6 am till 8 pm in pants is very uncomfortable," a student said.A student on the security team at the gate said pants were especially inconvenient during the rains. "It is unfair since such restrictions are notimposed on male students, but it is a rule now and we have to adhere to it," an organiser said.
Though Menezes was reluctant to comment, a senior college administration official confirmed the imposition of the new rule. "It is true that theprincipal held a meeting with the Malhar team earlier this month, during which he told them that shorts will not be allowed. There has been no suchincident as such, but this move is taken as a precaution. Girls can wear pants of kneelength or longer," he said.

At least 68 Indian nationals have been taken into custody at the Tacoma Northwest Detention Center, in Washington for allegedly crossing into thecountry illegally, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) department has said.

Of them, about half were detained in the last one month while they tried to sneak illegally into the United States from across the Mexican border,said Satnam Singh Chahal, the director of USbased North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) which obtained the information from the ICE.

They have all applied for asylum in America, citing state repression, and threats to their lives from the Punjab Police. NAPA is also attempting toidentify more Punjabi youth detained by Immigration, Punjab News Express reported. According to the website, most were picked up from Texasstate, which borders Mexico, one of America's biggest gateways for illegal immigrants.

At present 68 Indians are in custody at its contract detention centerin Tacoma, the ICE's western regional spokesperson Virginia Kice said. While their arrest dates vary widely, majority of them were taken intocustody this year and about half were arrested in the last 30 days, he said.
