The Jamie Farr Owens CorningClassic is back. After last yearstournament, there was some uncer-tainty as to whether Sylvania wouldsee the Farr in 2010. The contract hadexpired and there was little assurancethat it was going to be renewed. Butwith a new LPGA commissioner atthe helm, the JFOCC has returnedto Sylvania and is set to tee off on Thursday, July 1, at HighlandMeadows Golf Club on Erie Street.

Tournament Director JuddSilverman is thrilled with the new

leader of the LPGA and believesgood things are on the horizon for theFarr and the womens golf league.

We couldnt be happier,Silverman exclaimed. The newLPGA Commissioner Mike Whan hasbeen tremendous to work with. He isdoing a great job of repairing all of the damaged relationships the previ-ous commissioner created. Mike isdefinitely the right person to lead the

LPGA back to prominence.The popular Sylvania golf tourna-ment always draws a lot of attentionfrom area residents, as it not onlybrings celebrity athletes into town,but also creates an air of excitement.

The festivities kicked off onTuesday night with the Hylant GroupGala Dinner and Show at the SeaGateConvention Centre. Actor Jim Belushiand his band, The Sacred Hearts,entertained the crowd with their mixof blues and rock-n-roll.

With the JFOCC party officiallystarted, its now time for some golf.

The first round teesoff Thursday, July1, and this yearstournament prom-ises to be a greatone. Most of thetop LPGA playerswill be competing,including fan favor-ite Paula Creamerand defendingchampion EunjungYi. Creamer missedlast years tourna-ment due to injury.

playing again afterher thumb surgery.Since Paula had towithdraw from last years tourna-ment due to the injury its almost likewe have two defending championsthis year, said Silverman.

Joining Creamer and Yi is five-timeJFOCC winner Se Ri Pak and two-timer runner-up Morgan Pressel.

Its also great to have Se Ri Pak

and Morgan Pressel back. Se Ri hasalready won a tournament this yearand Morgan has finished second inour tournament the last two timesshes played, added Silverman.

Other notable players that arehaving great years include SuzannPettersen, Jiyai Shin, Stacy Lewisand Brittany Lincicome. Lewis wasborn in Toledo before moving awayat the age of 2.

The course at Highland Meadowsis a traditional course with narrowfairways and well-bunkered greens.The fairways are mostly hilly, and

the greens are undu-lating. A creek gen-tly meanders throughseveral of the holes.Silverman expects thecourse to be especiallychallenging in 2010 dueto some work put in bythe course superinten-dent and his crew.

Dan Salois, HighlandMeadows Golf CourseSuperintendent, and hiscrew have done anothermasterful job at gettingthe course in perfectcondition. There is con-

siderably more rougharound the course thisyear which should make

the conditions much more difficult.I would imagine a score of 10 underpar could be the winning score thisyear, noted Silverman.

Last year Eunjung Yi won thetournament with an impressive scoreof 266, 18 under par. In 2008, Paula

Eunjung Yi won the 2009 JFOCC with an impressive score of 266, 18 under par.

Creamer took the title with a scoreof 268, 16 under par. Creamer set atournament record that year by shoot-ing a 60, 11 under par, in the first

round.The general forecast for this yearstournament is sunny, as the teamworkof over 1,200 volunteers and 400local businesses is culminating in awonderful experience for all involvedand for the City of Sylvania.

Were very pleased with the sup-port weve received from the busi-ness community. If we can havea good week of ticket sales at thegate we have a great opportunity toexceed our charity contribution goalfor 2010, said Silverman.

Volunteers play an important rolein the JFOCC and Silverman wantedto stress that their contributions areinvaluable.

As always, we have a great vol-unteer organization in place. Thisyears volunteer chairperson is SherriKaspar. Sherri is doing a super jobputting together a volunteer work-

force of 1,200 people. I cant sayenough about how grateful we are toall of the volunteers for their loyaltyand dedication.

In addition to providing great golf and entertainment, the JFOCC raisesmoney for several childrens chari-ties. Since 1984, the tournament hasdonated millions of dollars to greatorganizations. This years charitiesinclude: Camp Courageous, GlidingStars, Heartbeat of Toledo, Make-A-Wish Foundation of NorthwestOhio, Mary Immaculate School,SAFY, Sunshine Inc. of NorthwestOhio, Toledo Community RecreationProgram, The Toledo Symphony,

Ronald McDonald House Charities,and the JFOCC Scholarship Fund of the Toledo Community Foundation.

The tournament concludes onSunday, July 4, when the winner willbe crowned and the $1 million pursewill be awarded. The prospect of theJFOCC returning in 2011 is strong;as Silverman is confident the popu-lar golf tournament will be back inSylvania next year.

We are currently working on anew agreement with the LPGA thatwe hope to have completed verysoon.

Its not just the greenskeepers whoare getting Highland Meadows readyfor the Jamie Farr golf event. There

is a special group of decoratorswho visit the golf course before playbegins each day to make certain thatthe temporary landscaping is attrac-tive and ready for view. They areled by Greg Kott, one of the GotMulch? Guys who own and oper-ate Clean Wood Recycling at 6505Bancroft St.

Kott and his crew are responsiblefor the temporary plants and flow-ers that decorate the Public Pavilionand the Champion tent. They alsoprovide two arrangements of specialsilk flowers for the 18th green. Theyarrive on site at 5:30 a.m. each morn-ing to make sure everything is per-fect for the days events and return tomaintain their displays every night.As a Lucas County sheriff, Kott isable to see the fruits of his labor ashe works at the four-day event.

In an interesting twist of fate, Kottcounts on seeing his former coun-selor from Sylvania Southview HighSchool at the event. He explains,My brother Mike and I were sopho-

mores at Southview, and we were thetypical confused students. We didntknow what we wanted to do in life,and we laughed when our counselor Ms. Karen Sziraki suggested that wetake what we were learning in the

vocational education program andthink about starting our own busi-ness. But she gave us something tothink about, and eventually we didstart that business, and now were

known as the Got Mulch Guys. Nowwe see her here; she has been avolunteer for a longtime.

Their businessinvolves the recy-

cling of yard wasteand untreatedwood products, andthe production of mulch and topsoil.Residents bringtheir yard waste,including clippings,leaves, and other garden waste to thesite, and are ableto buy mulch or topsoil. The mulchcomes in two naturalcolors, and four col-ors, dyed with natu-ral pigments. Thecost of the mulch isabout half of what itcosts to buy in large

bags at gas stationsor stores, and theyare willing to deliv-er large orders.
