Abandoned Gold King MansionAbandoned sites aren’t out of the ordinary here in

Arizona. In fact, coming across a ghost town, abandoned mine, or other hints of human life arepretty common even in the most remote areas. Tuckedaway in the Hualapai Mountains is an 88-year-oldbuilding, a relic of the wealth that seemed to endlesslyflow from the mountain’s mines. Or, at least, shouldhave. Mohave County was formed in 1864, rightaround the same time that gold was discovered inArizona’s mountainous landscape. Located southeast ofKingman, the Gold King Mine was opened in 1929. Arough drive up dirt roads or a long hike will take youhere, to the site of the now-abandoned GoldKing Mansion.

The Gold King Mansion was originally designed tobe one of a series of modern miner accommodationsconstructed in 1929. The company announced plans tocreate a series of two-story concrete bunkhouses for itsminers and other workers. These buildings weresupposed to feature some incredible modern advancesthat were definite improvements over the tents andshacks miners just years before lived in. over the years, a visit here willallow you to spot what remains. For example, the intricate ceilingmolding is unlike anythingyou’ll find anywhere else! Thegently arched entryways, giantwindows, and high ceilingsmake this feel more like a villathan miners’ housing. The goodtimes didn’t last long.

The mine opened in 1929,the same year as the stockmarket crash that led to theGreat Depression. This led to ahalt in mining, a few failedattempts to get it started backup, making the mine sit idle forlong periods of time. By 1957,the Arizona Department ofMineral Resources proclaimedthe mine idle, and it wasabandoned. A hollow buildingstripped bare and hidden awayfrom view is now what remainsof the once rich mansion. By the1970s, most of the decorativeinterior was either completelygone or vandalized. To preservewhat’s left of the building, theBureau of Land Managementand Arizona Site Stewards nowoversee the care and protectionfor future generations to enjoy.

Canada, all the while laughing, smiling and chatting withwhomever she meets - just asshe does at The Orchard. Besidesworking at Basha’s for 20 years, volunteering in a nursing homefor two years, and helping 6thgraders to read, Sue had themost interesting job of flaggingcrop dusters so they would sprayin the correct field and then shewould walk ahead to each rowso they would spray the correctrow. Two rules Sue has in life are“don’t sweat the small stuff” and“everything is small stuff.”

Stop by and say hi - shewould love it.

Frank’s Health Talk“Understanding Cholesterol”As with everything else, there

is a good and bad side to fats. The general conception that allfat is bad for you, as prevalent asit may be, is simply not true. And the most maligned of all ischolesterol. Practically everyoneknows that, under certaincircumstances, cholesterol canbe responsible for heart attacks, but very few are aware of theways that it is essential to health.

At least two-thirds of yourbody cholesterol is produced bythe liver or in the intestine. It isfound there as well as in thebrain, the adrenals and nervefiber sheaths. When it is good, itis very, very good. Cholesterol inthe skin is converted to essentialvitamin D when touched by theultraviolet rays of the sun.Cholesterol aids in themetabolism of carbohydrates.Cholesterol is a prime supplierof the life-essential adrenalsteroid hormones, such ascortisone. Cholesterol is acomponent of every membranenecessary for the production ofmale and female sex hormones.

It is worth mentioning thatthough the egg consumption inthe United States is one-half ofwhat it used to be in 1945, therehas not been a comparabledecline in heart disease. Andthough the American HeartAssociation deems eggshazardous, a diet without themcan be equally hazardous. Notonly do eggs have the most

perfect protein componentsof any food, but they containLecithin, which aids in fatassimilation. And mostimportant, they raise your HDLlevels, which are the good guyswhose detergent action breaksup plaque and can transportcholesterol through the bloodwithout clogging arteries. Muchmore or better yet, beginattending the Health Classes.God bless-until next month’spublication- Frank

Grilling AreaAs a reminder, there is no

grilling allowed on the propertyexcept for in the designated grillarea. When using the facilities, please make safety a top priority, especially if children are present.Remember that the grilling areashould be cleaned and ready foruse by other residents beforeyou leave the area. Do not leavebehind food, trash or beverages. Thanks, and enjoy cooking out!

A Soothing SucculentMention aloe vera, and its

common use in soothingsunburned skin probably comesto mind, but this succulent hasbeen a prized plant sinceancient times.

More than 6,000 years ago,Egyptians used it in their healthand beauty regimens. Legendhas it that queens Nefertiti andCleopatra included aloe in theirskincare routines, and ancientmedical scrolls listed a varietyof remedies containing aloe.Traders introduced the plant toother countries throughout Asiaand Europe, and the popularityof aloe spread.

Aloe vera requires little care, making it an easy-to-grow

houseplant even for thosewithout a green thumb. Cuttingopen one of its thick, spear-shaped leaves exposes atranslucent gel that can beapplied directly to sunburns, rashes and other minor skinirritations. Some people findthat the cool gel soothes skin, provides moisture andrelieves itching.

Numerous ready-made aloevera products are also available.

Essential Exercise TypesExercising regularly provides

an abundance of health benefits, and varying activities is the keywhen it comes to physicalfitness. Here are four types ofexercise that experts say shouldbe part of a well-roundedroutine. Be sure to consult adoctor before starting a newexercise program.

Endurance. Also calledcardiovascular or aerobicexercise, these activities targetthe heart, lungs and circulatorysystem by increasing your heartrate and breathing. Walking, dancing and swimming areexamples of endurance exercises.

Strength. Muscle mass oftendeclines with age, and strengthtraining builds it back. This typeof exercise makes you stronger, relieves joint pain and improvesbalance. Common forms ofstrength training include liftingweights, using resistance bandsand doing arm curls and leg lifts.

Balance. Maintaining goodbalance is essential to preventingfalls. Balance exercises oftenfocus on the lower body. Tai chi, standing on one foot, andwalking heel to toe in a straightline can improve balance.

Flexibility. Movements thatstretch your muscles help youstay flexible and limber, makingit easier to perform everydayactivities, such as bending to tieyour shoes. Stretching exercisesand yoga improve flexibility.
