Sunday Reflection More Announcements

Speak, Mary, declaring what you saw, wayfaring. The tomb of Christ, who is living, the glory

of Jesus' resurrection; bright angels attesting,

the shroud and napkin resting.

Mary went to the tomb with a heavy heart, mourning the loss of her friend and teacher. John's account, read this Easter morning, tells of her solitary journey in the dark. She could hardly believe her eyes when she saw that the huge stone covering the entrance to the tomb had been rolled aside. Her first thought was that some-one had taken the body of the Lord, and she ran for help, going straight to Simon Peter and the other disci-ple, the one that Jesus loved. To these dearest friends of the Lord, Mary cried out, ""They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don't know where they put him."

The disciples go with her immediately, and enter the tomb to see the burial shroud empty; the cloth that covered the Face of the Lord neatly rolled up and set aside. None of them understand yet the full impact of what has occurred. But even so, when they saw the empty tomb, the Gospel tells us they believed. The dark night of their grief is met with the breaking dawn of hope. Their confusion will soon be overcome, as each of them encounters the Risen Lord and the truth of the Resurrection is revealed to them. What Jesus predicted has come to pass. He is Risen from the dead, and death itself has been defeated.

It is Mary's voice that brings the news of Christ's empty tomb to the disciples; in the next passages in John's Gospel, Mary is the first to see the Risen Lord. She and the other women are the first to bring the Good News to the Apostles, who will go out to bring the Good News to the ends of the earth. God works through His beloved friends, entrusting them with the mission of a lifetime: to bring the Good News of His Resurrection to the whole world.

"Yes, Christ my hope is arisen; to Galilee he goes before you."

Christ indeed from death is risen, our new life obtaining. Have mercy, victor King, ever reigning!

Amen. Alleluia.

April 28 is Divine Mercy Sunday

In the 1930s, St. Maria Faustina Kowalska received private revelations concerning Divine Mercy that she rec-orded in her Diary*. Among the revela-tions were an image of Jesus, with his right hand raised in a blessing and his left touching his garment above his heart. Red and white rays emanate from his heart, symbolizing the blood and water that was poured out for our salva-tion and our sanctification. The Lord requested that “Jesus, I trust in You” be inscribed under his image. Other revelations include a Chaplet of Divine Mercy, prayed on Rosary beads, and requests to observe Divine Mercy Sunday. One such request was:

My daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceiva-ble mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the Fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punish-ment. … Let no soul fear to draw near to Me. … It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy. (Diary, no. 699)

In 2000, the Vatican decreed that the Second Sunday of Easter would be known as Divine Mercy Sunday.

Our Divine Mercy Sunday service will be April 28 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Please join us for Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Stations of the Cross, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, personal meditation, and con-fession.

The virtue for the month of April is Grace. Students and staff seek ways to be gracious not only to one another, but also to others whom they do not know. One beautiful example came from 5th grade students in Mrs. DeVasConCellos’ and Mrs. Schutt’s classrooms. Students hand painted and gifted a per-sonal Pysanky egg to each person receiving the Sacraments of Initiation this weekend--15 in total! Students were so eager to share this gift that another half-dozen were given to our home-bound parishioners. On behalf of the students and staff at Christ the King Catholic School, I wish you a very Happy Easter!

In Christ, Sheila LaSalle

Ignatian Spirituality

He has risen, alleluia! We wish you a most blessed Easter! Intimacy with Jesus is the central grace of the Spiritual Exercises. During the Easter season, people in the Exercises of St. Ignatius will be reflecting on how we can learn to love like God. They get the opportunity to consider the limitless blessings received through God's love. There is a challenge too – to hold nothing back from God. This is how Ignatius put it. “Take, Lord, receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, my entire will – all that I have and call my own. You have given it all to me. To you, oh Lord, I return it. Everything is yours; do with it what you will. Give me only your love and your grace. That is enough for me.” Happy Easter.

Our next group meeting is Monday, April 22, 6:30 – 8 p.m., in the Holy Spirit Parish Activity Center, Kennewick. For more information, visit https://spiritual-exercises.com

Spiritual Practices

Eucharistic Devotion

Carmelite Corner

Easter is celebrated for eight days! Alleluia! During the Octave of Easter the prayers on Easter Sunday in the Divine Office are prayed on each day of the week through Sunday. Join the Church in celebrating the Resurrection of Christ as we pray the Easter Morning Office antiphons: 1. The splendor of Christ risen from the dead has shone

on the people redeemed by his blood, alleluia. 2. Our Redeemer has risen from the tomb; let us sing

a hymn of praise to the Lord our God, alleluia. 3. Alleluia, the Lord is risen as he promised, alleluia.

Pray and ponder the following Preface I of Easter: It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, at all times to acclaim you, O Lord, but on this day above all to laud you yet more gloriously, when Christ our Passover has been sacrificed. For he is the true Lamb who has taken away the sins of the world; by dying he has destroyed our death and by rising, restored our life. Therefore, overcome with paschal joy, every land, eve-ry people exults in your praise and even the heavenly Powers, with angelic hosts, sing together the unending hymn of your glory, as they acclaim: Holy, Holy, Holy…

Franciscan Spirituality

Would you like to give more time to God, but wonder how to do that when your life is so busy? Do you long for holiness, and feel a need for support in growing spir-itually? Perhaps your heart has been moved by stories of St. Francis of Assisi, or the Peace Prayer attributed to him, and you are seeking that same holy simplicity, true peace and perfect joy? If so, Christ may be calling you to explore the Secular Franciscan life. We’d be happy to meet with you and to share about our Franciscan journey. Contact Bob Fitzsimmons at [email protected], www.tcfran.org, or 521-9387.

Evening prayers for peace will resume after Easter in the chapel on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. Prayers from the breviary are led by members of the Social Justice and Peace Committee. In a world rampant with violence, Pope Francis calls us to follow the nonviolent way of Jesus. Can you spare a half-hour before dinner?
