Joe Ramon Bingochea, 70, of Superior, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012 at Banner Heart Hospital, Mesa, Arizona. Joe was born on Sept. 19,1941 in Superior, the son of Rumaldo and Margarita Vingochea.

Joe worked as a bus driver and maintenance personal for Superior Unifi ed School District until heart problems caused him to retire at the young age of 38. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Joe is survived by his wife of 45 years, Rosa; children, Christine (Tony) Martinez, Charlene (Joe) Gutierrez and Joe (Toni) Bingochea II; grandchildren, Joseph (Shawna) Gutierrez, Alyssa Gutierrez, Kristi

Visitation and Rosary for Leonore Lopez Serpa will be held Friday, Jan. 20, from 6-8 p.m. at the Rest Haven Mortuary, 4302 East Southern Avenue, Phoenix. Graveside services will be held the following day at 11 a.m. at the Rest Haven Cemetery. Mrs. Serpa passed away Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012. She was born in Superior on May 30, 1931, graduated from Superior High School in 1951 and married Johnny Serpa from Phoenix who preceded her in death. She is survived by her son, Fernando Serpa of San Francisco, California; a sister, Barbara Lopez Graham (Jim) of Hyrum, Utah; sister-in-law, Lillian Lopez of Albuquerque,New Mexico; and several nieces and nephews.

A Superior woman was killed Wednesday, Jan. 11, after a head on collision near the Arboretum. According to the Arizona Department of

Public Safety, Stephanie Rachelle Ward, 19, Superior, was traveling westbound on US 60 in a Chevrolet SUV at 6:20 a.m. when it

veered off the road to the right. The SUV re-entered the road spinning counterclockwise. Ward’s vehicle crossed the center line into the

eastbound lane of US 60. The vehicle was facing the wrong way on US 60 when it was struck head on by a Chrysler sedan driven by Desiree Darlene

Philpot of Claypool. The SUV slid backward down a 10-foot embankment and the Chrysler came to rest in the center of US 60 facing south.

Ward was pronounced dead at the scene. Philpot was transported, treated and released from Scottsdale Osborne Hospital.

By Rev. Dennis Van GorpFamily Life Christian Center I have often heard someone quote from a book or another person without checking their source. What usually happens is that they get it wrong. This is a common mistake with the Bible. One well-meaning and often heard quote is this: “God helps those who help themselves.”

A careful study of the Scriptures, results in us wondering where it is and why we couldn’t find it. Quite simply, it is not found in the Bible at all. In one of his writings, Benjamin Franklin made that statement. But, it does sound so right, so . . . biblical. From Psalm 37:40 we read, “The LORD helps them and delivers them because they take refuge in

Him.” According to Webster; refuge, is to shelter from danger or difficulty, a place of safety. So, we find that the Lord helps those who turn to Him in times of trouble and difficulty, seeking His safety and security. The Psalmist, David, had many experiences living under God’s divine protection. He knew the best place to find safety. In Psalm 18:10, “the Name of the

Lord is a strong tower, the righteous run to it and are safe.” Also, from Psalm 40:17 we read, “You are my help and my deliverer.” Psalm 46:1 tells us, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble.” Looking further, we find in Isaiah 41:10, “do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will

uphold you with My righteous right hand.” In Psalm 17:3 we read, “Lord, be my rock of refuge to which I can always go.” In chapter 28 and verse 7 we find, “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and I am helped.” The writer of Hebrews adds this (13:6), “So we say with confidence, ‘the Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?’ “

God helps those who trust in Him, depend on Him and call upon His name. He is always available in our time of need and despair. He will not hide from us, even when we try to hide from Him. When the storms of life attack: run to Jesus. He is waiting with open arms to love and shelter us. He is the Lord. He is our Lord. He is trustworthy, dependable and . . . He loves me!

She then bolted and promptly tripped over the boy, who judging from his current state, did not handle intense moments gloriously. Dexter, having lost his coke bottle-sized glasses when he hit the ground, vaguely saw the situation go down, yet firmly understood that someone had tripped over him; being a gentleman, he wandered in the direction of said person to help them up, entirely oblivious to the missing item of clothing. Dexter is basically legally blind and has no business wandering anywhere without his glasses, doing so immediately resulted in the same action he had previously caused and the poor boy ended up on top of Muriel in, shall we say, an awkward position. Ohh and what an awkward position it was too. Unfortunately this whole hubbub took place in the direct line of site of Brad…M’s boyfriend, 200-pound jock, quarterback, and all together unenjoyably large and brutish. Brad gnarred off some words that were unrecognizable and removed Dexter from Muriel’s company, pronto. He was thus deposited back on the pile he had just evacuated. He wanted to evacuate it again. Bessie, the cow that left that delightful muckle took no notice of the events happening before her; she had just had fresh alfalfa thrown in her pasture, more for the diabolic process. Dexter searched eagerly through his bag for his

Principal Sanderson ended his school day by explaining to a blasé junior, in a flurry of terse words, why lockers are not synonymous with urinals. He emerged from the front doors to find a girl with no bottom half of her ensemble, a boy who was already covered in a reasonable amount of excrement, being thrown back into it and the majority of the students having missed their buses watching this display. Before the locker/urinal episode, he had come upon a student in the library who had meticulously glued several shelves of books together; in the ensuing chase, he rounded a corner to find that custodian had just waxed the linoleum. He unconsciously felt the large tear in the seat of his

pants as he thought about the incident. Nope. I’m out. I might actually kill one of them if I stay. He walked calmly over to his car, threw open the door, sat down and slammed his toes in the door…his hands moving much quicker than his feet. The students could hear the expletive clearly through the glass. I need a beer. I need more than a beer. I need five maybe six beers, he thought as he turned towards the highway. I don’t even know if I have anything at home. While pondering the contents of his liquor cabinet, Sanderson failed to notice several cars pulled over on the side of the road. He failed to notice several police officers waving him down, arms flapping frantically in his direction. He did notice, however, when the freshly

thrown nailstrip took out his front tires. “WHAT THE –!” Sanderson bolted out of his car in fury. This was not terribly impressive to the officers since Sanderson was all of five feet three inches tall. Head are going to roll, I am going to expel the little snot that did this. Sanderson apparently thought he was still at school and did not recognize that his administrative powers meant diddly-squat to these rather annoyed police officers. I’m gonna kick some—Or you’re gonna get tazed, Sanderson…the police don’t respond well to being ignored and then yelled at. “That’s for being an idiot…Don’t you yell at me!” the largest, angriest cop yelled at Sanderson and he flailed about on the ground. “Eleven cops just tried to flag you

down and you just cruised on through!” Sanderson twitched on the ground. I am actually peeing my pants, right now!, Sanderson realized, as that familiar warm sensation from his youth drifted back to him. Just then, as Sanderson unwittingly, emptied his bladder in front of an entire unit of cops, the man intended for the nail strip slammed into his car. “Man, you really should have just stayed in bed today,” the cop said to Sanderson, laughing slightly. “I am fully aware of this.” Sanderson replied…though since his tongue was still feeling the ill-effects of the recent tazing, it sounded more like “I’b bobbly bawarra dis”.

After a two-week winter break, school is back in for Superior Head Start and after spending a nice time with family and friends, the teaching staff and students are settling back in, getting reacquainted and gearing up for great fun and learning.
