Editor: Last week, the Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution that asked our county constitutionally elected officials to enforce the Hatch Act with their employees as we enter this election season. The resolution passed by a two to one vote. Chairman Rios and Supervisor David Snider voted aye and Supervisor Bryan Martyn voted no. This “Resign to Run” resolution is really nothing new to Pinal County employees. This Board, as well as past Boards of Supervisors have always insisted that county employees abide by the provisions of the Hatch Act. The original Hatch Act was enacted by the Federal Government in the 1930s to prevent any federal official using their influence to gain or disburse favors while they seek elected office. The State of Arizona has passed a similar law under Revised Statutes §41-772. Pinal County Policy and Procedures 1.30.A, makes it clear that public employees are prohibited from being candidates for nomination or election to any paid, partisan public office, or from taking any part in the management of any political campaign or recall effort. When performing their duties on behalf of Pinal County, employees must refrain from political activity

while on duty or at public expense. This resolution was not targeting any county employee. This resolution is basically a reiteration of our county policy and procedures and we simply asked our elected officials to follow our lead. My personal thought is that the resolution is very sound public policy. Many, if not all, elected officials are recipients of federal dollars in the way of grants or other funds. Any violation of the Hatch Act gives the federal government the means to come to Pinal County and ask us to forfeit those needed funds. In other words, Pinal County Policy and Procedures 1.30.A protects Pinal County residents and ensures that our employees are following the letter of the law. I am pleased to note that nearly every elected official in Pinal County is on board keeping their employees within the law by asking them to follow our policies and procedures. I find it puzzling that Sheriff Paul Babeu will not sign on to this resolution that would ensure that his employees follow county policy. If there were a violation of the Hatch Act, his department would have a lot to lose when it comes to federal money. The Sheriff’s

Office is currently under investigation on this very point by multiple agencies. The investigations involve Cheryl Chase, a candidate for Supervisor, Steve Henry, another Sheriff’s employee exploring a run for Sheriff and others in Babeu’s Office. Why would Sheriff Babeu want to jeopardize vital public safety funding by not insisting his employees follow federal law? Sheriff Babeu has indicated that he has obtained an opinion that his staff is not subject to the prior or newly adopted county policy. If litigation is brought upon us, I will be on record with this letter as someone opposed to the use of any taxpayer funds for legal fees. We have already seen one valuable county employee voluntarily retire in order to seek the office of County Recorder in this election. Barbara Kelly did the right thing by ending her employment with Pinal County in order to comply with our Policies and Procedures. It is vitally important that you as a resident of this great county are served by employees who are doing their job within the boundaries of the law and to the best of their abilities. /s/ Pete RiosChairmanPinal County Board of Supervisors

Letter to the Editor: Babeu refuses to join in enforcing Federal law

According to state law, there are two methods by which police may arrest suspected offenders. The suspect may be physically taken into the department and booked into jail, or the arresting officer may write a citation and

release the suspect to appear in court later. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Only criminal citations are listed. All damage amounts are estimates. Items are given to The Superior Sun by

the Superior Police Department and reflect information available at the time the report is compiled. March 29 Violation of an order of protection was reported in the 400 block of Terrace. March 30 A possible

Superior Police Reportmissing person was reported in the 200 block of O’Donnell. March 31 Emilio Luz was arrested for two warrants issued out of Apache Junction. March 31 Possible theft was reported in the 800 block of West Highway 60. April 1 Possible burglary was reported in the 100 block of Gray. April 1 Possible theft was

reported in the 200 block of Copper. April 3 Assault was reported in the 900 block Contreras. April 3 Assault was reported in the 800 block of Highway 60. Calls not listed include 28 miscellaneous traffic reports, five disturbances, three suspicious activity reports, four civil matters, three animal complaints,

four medical calls, two alarm drops, two threatening/harassment reports, one fire and one welfare check. Citizens are reminded to call Silent Witness at 1-800-358-INFO, Crime Stop at 689-5611 or the Information Tip Line at 520-827-0065 if they have information that may help the police department in solving a crime.

YOUR OPPORTUNITY FOR PUBLIC COMMENTWHAT’S HAPPENING SRP received a request from Resolution Copper Mining LLC (“Resolution”), a private property owner and SRP customer, to relocate a portion of the existing Superior to Silver King 115kV transmission line, near the Town of Superior. The relocation would occur entirely on Resolution’s private property and would accommodate development rock storage from shaft sinking and underground development activities. In response to Resolution’s request, SRP is proposing to relocate approximately one mile of the existing 115kV line to the northwest, adjacent and parallel to an existing transmission line corridor.

SRP is required to obtain a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility (CEC) from the Arizona Corporation Commission for this relocation. SRP would like to hear from the public regarding the relocation of this 115kV transmission line segment. Your input will be part of the environmental studies being conducted and included in the CEC application.

By Mila Lira Families in Superior who were not out enjoying picnics and parties in the desert were treated to a fun filled Easter in the Park Saturday. Parks and Recreation director Barbara Arriola worked hard to collect more than $1,000 in donations to make the event a success. The children were treated to an egg hunt with prizes for the person who collected the most eggs, a bonnet contest and a cake walk. The cakes for the cake walk were donated by Marie Aboud, Caitlyn Thompson and Sy Thompson. Vice Mayor Olga Lopez was also on hand to help get the event started and members of the Public Work Staff helped to cook the hot dogs. Local businesses providing donations were: Save Money Market, Superior Head Start, Resolution Copper, Cindy Tracy, La Serna General Store, Southwest Towning, Edwardo’s Pizza, Farmers Market, Rose’s Roses, Copper Gecko, Something Fishy, Steve McNeely’s, Rosati’s in Gold Canyon, Eastern Buffet in Mesa, Safeway, Jade Grill, Porters Café, Nancy Jung, Felicia’s Ice Cream Shop and Circle K of Superior.

By Mila Lira Local Superior Resident Mario Lopez recently won 3rd Place at the Mesa Custom Car Show in the 1960-1987 Street Custom Truck categories with his 1969 Chevy Truck. There were 29 entries in the 1960-1987 Street Custom Truck category. Custom trucks, low-rider cars and bikes from throughout the Southwest entered the car show. There was an estimated 11,000 people who attended the show to see more than 480 entries. The car show was held on March 31, 2012 at the Mesa Convention Center. For Lopez entering this event was a labor of love not only on his part but also on the part of his wife, children, parents and extended family. One of the first things that Lopez commented on was how supportive his wife Jacqueline is of his hobby; he estimates that they have $8,000-$10,000 invested in the truck and he thanked her for her support in preparing the

truck for competition. During the interview with Lopez, their young children were already trying to decide who was going to get the truck. Lopez has been working on custom cars as a hobby since he was 14 but he has been working on his award winning truck for four years. The 1969 Chevy truck was originally purchased from Cobre Valley Motors in Globe, Arizona by Mario’s grandfather Joe Lopez. Eventually the truck was driven by his father Joey Lopez and then the truck was passed along to Mario’s older brother Tommy Lopez. The truck sat in his parent’s yard until Lopez began to work on the truck. He has restored the truck back to the way it was when the truck was first purchased with the exception of the wire rims. Just about every member of Lopez’s family has helped him prepare the truck for competition. His parents, aunts and uncles have often purchased

items for the truck as holiday and birthday gifts for Lopez. With the exception of the paint job and upholstery Lopez has done the work himself with the help of friends and family. In the final three weeks before the competition Lopez said that their entire family was over to help him put the final touches on the truck.Lopez said he would eventually like to restore a 1961 Impala. Lopez is employed at Resolution Copper as a Waste Water Treatment Operator. He and his wife Jacqueline have four children. He is the son of Joey and Olga Lopez. This was the first year in a very long time that the Mesa Show was held. This year the show was organized by Superiorite Richard Ochoa, the owner of Motorsport Showcase. Superiorite Gabe Macias also participated in the show with his car club from Las Vegas, Nevada. Unfortunately Macias did not place in this show.

By Rev. Dennis Van GorpFamily Life Christian Center Many people are constantly concerned about their image, how others see them. Their hair and clothes have to be just right. They must hang out with the right people and drive the right vehicle and be seen at the right stores. 1 Thessalonians 4:1 tells us to live in order to please God. That means it is not man’s opinions that are important, but it is what God thinks about us that really matters. The quality of our life must be measured by God’s standards, not ours. We begin by reading the Bible; looking for the actions, thoughts, attitudes and words that are pleasing to God. Next, we do a self analysis, watching for those things in our lives that do not agree with a spiritual life based on the

Holy Scriptures. From 2 Corinthians 5:9, we find that our goal is to please the Lord. Hebrews 11:6 declares that our faith pleases God. Philippians 4:18 says an acceptable sacrifice is pleasing to God. Proverbs 15:8 tells us that the prayers of a righteous person are pleasing also. Throughout the Scriptures we find: obedience to His commands, encouraging others, helping people, giving to the Lord, keeping the Sabbath holy, honoring parents, praise & worship and sharing God’s love, are all pleasing to Him. God doesn’t look at our outward appearance. He looks into the depths of our heart. It is there that the truth of who and what we really are is found. Each of us must make that determination to follow Jesus. We must decide to find out what pleases God and then do it.

Pastor’s CornerIf we are not reading our Bible, we will not know what God is looking for in our lives. The things we think about, the words we speak, the attitudes we carry and the actions we take

should all make the Lord smile with joy. When God is pleased, He shows it by giving us rewards – blessings. Then, without a doubt in your mind, you can truthfully say – “Jesus loves me!”
