A Christmas Present for YouI love Christmas! I love Santa! I love all the tree decorating, andendless Michael Buble Christmas songs! I love it all!! But the onething I love the most is the reason for the season: Jesus.
Christians believe all round the world that God became a human 2000years ago, 2000 miles away! I find this amazing and incredible thatJesus aka 'God with us' is 'with us' today, in our hearts, churches, homes and communities.
Below, as gift to you, I have given you all a small early Christmaspresent! It's a short list of some of the amazing benefits Jesus giveseveryone. I encourage you to cut it out and remind yourself everydayin December of the true wonder of Christmas.
The birth of Jesus shows us that God did not mess up when he madeus but, like an awesome parent, he is a father who loves to parade us!
Revd Daniel McCarthy
Vicar of St Martin’s

A Christmas Fridge Magnet
Because of Christmas I know that:
1. God knows what it is to laugh and have a good time like me.2. God knows what it is to cry and feel pain like me.3. God knows what it feels to be tempted and overcome like I
can.4. God thinks I am talented, gifted, precious and beautiful.5. God wants to give me a prosperous life6. God picks me up when I fall.7. God wants to revive me.8. God longs for me to live life to the full.9. I can overcome any obstacle with God's strength.10. I can forgive with God's compassion.11. I can make history and be a world changer.12. Every 'set back' in my life, in God's strength, is a 'set up' for a
major comeback!
Have a blessed Christmas! Daniel

Volunteers needed please! It is hoped to start a voluntary group of people to support villagers as and
when required. The idea is that a pool of people can be available to assistany resident of the village who is temporarily, or permanently, unable to do
basic tasks, for whatever reason. Enough people have now come forward to make this viable (but please don’t
let that stop you if you still wish to volunteer!). Many thanks to those whohave volunteered. The next steps to formalising operational arrangements are
now being planned. If you are interested in helping in any way, or to find out more information,
please contact Ann Finney on 01707 642193.

Last month's meeting was largely a DIY event. We did, however, have theRev. John Churcher attend, and he told us about a visit he had made to theNational Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, which he had found very movingand he recommended going there. We then heard from some of the membersabout being conscripted to carry out war work during WW2. These wereamazing stories and we really appreciated hearing them.

Shenley Women’s Institute - November 2017Forget about 'Tiptoeing Through the Tulips' or a walk in 'An English CountryGarden'! We were treated to a virtual stroll around Aylett Nurseries by ChrisThorne (see photo on the facing page), in a talk entitled 'News from theGarden Centre Shelves' for our November meeting. Even if, like me, you arenot a gardener, this was a fascinating evening. Chris explained that he hadbeen shopping on our behalf and had a large number of products for us tolook at and he gave us a wealth of advice and information as to what wascurrent and new to the retail market for the amateur gardener. One important fact that Chris stressed tine and time again was to READ THESMALL PRINT on the package as many products have multiple uses and maycontain the same ingredients, but the manufacturers' marketing techniquesmay tempt you into buying a more expensive product than is necessary byuse of clever phrases such as 'extra tough'. Also, many products requirepatience as they can take up to three weeks to work. If you are battling weeds, Chris recommended Resolva which is a weed killerthat turns the leaves black which is handy if you like a visual representation ofefficacy. This product works by causing the blackened cells to die andfacilitates movement around the plant and even works on the toughest ofproblems such as Ivy. Roundup Gel is especially good for Bindweed andChris advised to use a cardboard or Perspex collar around nearby plants sothat the gel spray will target the weed and not the nearby plants. My husband was pleased to hear that he does not need to spend the time andenergy power jetting our patio as he should be using Resolva and Weedolwhich also prevent new weeds by halting germination.Organic gardeners were urged to read the labels carefully as some newformulations mean that products that were previously organic can no longer beclassified as organic. With regard to animal 'pests', apparently tabasco sauce in a ratio of 1:10 onbird food will deal with squirrels whilst not affecting birds which have a weakersense of taste. However, rain will dilute the tabasco. Silent Roar is essenceof lion dung and this will scare cats away. Ultrasonic devices can also beefficacious when dealing with cats. A device can seem costly with an initialoutlay of around £50 but when a repellent can cost £7 a time this is quicklyrecouped. This is a mere taster of the evening and a visit to the Aylett Nurseries'extremely good website will fill in some of the missing gaps. If you sign up,there are all sorts of tempting incentives and money off vouchers to be had. After our usual delicious and refreshing tea and coffee break our President,Cathy, emulated the best of game show hosts with an entertaining quiz onsong titles from opening lines. More than one question had a chorus from theaudience delivering the answer. Contd.

This month's competition was entitled 'a table centrepiece'. The worthy winnerwas Cheryl Newnham. Margaret Harrington took second place and ZoeBeeson came third. The flower of the months was a beautiful blue periwinklebrought in by Sue Payne. The December meeting will be held on 07 December, at 7.30pm in the VillageHall. The bells will certainly be ringing out for Christmas as The Aston BellRingers are making a welcome return. The format of the evening is ourChristmas Party and all attendees are requested to bring a small plate of foodto add to the buffet table and of course a glass (for your drink). Thecompetition will be for 'The best wrapped Christmas present for a child to bedonated to the Salvation Army'. If anyone feels that their wrapping skills arenot up to competition standards, please bring a wrapped gift anyway andthese will be put into a separate section. It would be helpful if all gifts couldhave a tag specifying the appropriate gender and age of the child it is intendedfor. We are looking forward to seeing all our members on one of our morespecial meetings of the year.

Shenley Parish Council Report - November 2017November has been a really busy month for The Parish.
Our remembrance multi-faith service was superb, and a really fitting tribute tothose who fought and lost their lives for our country. A special thank you toRevd Daniel McCarthy for co-ordinating the event. A big thank you also toDavid Claydon for playing "The Last Post" so beautifully…… it was a reallymoving moment. Thanks to Liz Trott and the ladies from the WI for providingthe reception that followed in the Village Hall. The refreshments and thevillage archive exhibition provided the opportunity for villagers to mingle andtake a nostalgic look at the Shenley that was.
A couple of days later we were honoured by our local "celebrity" Ben Caplanswitching on our Christmas lights. This has now become an annual eventenjoyed by all, particularly the children. Pizzas and wine were provided byNovita the new Italian restaurant in the Village, for which we are really grateful.
We are still considering the possibility of extending the Christmas lights alongPorters Park Drive. Would you be prepared to pay an additional £1 - £1.50per year to see the lights extended around Porters Park Drive all the way toNorth Avenue? Let us know your thoughts by [email protected].
We still have three community village events left before the end of the year.
Seniors Christmas Theatre Trip - 42nd Street - Wednesday 13th December
Chanukah at the Cage - Saturday 16th December
Santa at the Cage - Sunday 17th December
Unfortunately the theatre trip is now sold out, but keep your eyes open onFacebook and around the Village for information on the other two events.
It is really disappointing that The Church of The Good Shepherd is closing itsdoors to local groups in favour of a full time day nursery. Members of theCatholic Church attended our last meeting and were really upset that they hadnot even been consulted by the Diocese of Westminster. They were alsodisappointed as many parishioners over the years had raised money to buildthe hall that was to be used as a community facility. The Parish Council haveobjected to this change of use and are particularly concerned about theinevitable increase in traffic that will occur from a nursery use in a location thatis already an accident blackspot.
Good news re the noisy and disruptive youths. As a result of the 101 reportsphoned in, the Police have apprehended various individuals and charges andorders have been made against them. Let's hope that our Village can returnto being a peaceful and trouble free place in which to live.
Stay safe and have a great Christmas. Seasons Greetings to you all.
Councillor William Susman, Chairman - Shenley Parish Council

Hertsmere Borough Council's New Local Plan's Planning forGrowth 'Issues & Options' Public Consultation
It was good to see so many residents at the Hertsmere Planning Drop-In at Shenley Primary School on Monday 13th November. Hertsmeresays that they "received responses from almost 300 individuals andorganisations" to their first consultation. However, 300 out of 103,000+residents is a poor response. We hope that many more than 300Shenley residents have told Hertsmere what they think about theproposed housing numbers for Shenley on Pursley Farm fields, andWood Hall Stud fields down Radlett Lane, and of course the proposednew 4,000 home Garden Village on land next to Salisbury Hall andWillows Farm. Hertsmere should listen to what we want and payattention when we tell them that our rural infrastructure cannot copewith the scale of development they are proposing in our Green belt. There are 10,000 traffic movements through the Village daily at themoment. Their proposals will mean traffic movements doubling to20,000. Bus services are infrequent and unreliable, we have noemployment opportunities to speak of and no railway station.
Our Neighbourhood Plan research shows that our Community onlyneeds a couple of hundred homes over the next 15 years - affordablehomes for young people and suitable homes for older residents todownsize to.
On 7th December, Cllrs. William Susman, Rosemary Gilligan, AnthonySpencer, Peter Wayne and Nicky Beaton will be having a meeting withthe Hertsmere Planning team and on the following day there will be ameeting with Oliver Dowden MP. On your behalf we will be doing allwe can to try and get a more sensible outcome with regard to thedevelopment numbers proposed for Shenley and the sites beingconsidered. We know that you are opposed to large scaledevelopment and want our valuable Green belt to be protected, so dowe. We will let you know how we get on.
The Neighbourhood Plan team is planning to have a Working PartyBrainstorm at the Village Hall on a Tuesday evening in the middle ofJanuary to which everyone will be invited. We can all decide where wewould like our development to be. The Steering Group will give youmore information about Plan progress shortly and give you the resultsof the recent Housing & Development survey.
