MAPEI and LEED: Making green easy Our Green Policy

Mapei’s longstanding commitment to the environment extends to our facilities, products and processes – from minimizing waste to maximizing use of recycled materials. In addition, the focus of our Research & Development efforts is to formulate ecologically sustainable products and systems which do not include solvents or pollutants and guarantee very low emission levels of volatile organic compounds.Mapei is a proud innovator of environmentally responsible solutions and a manufacturer of more than 150 products which make it possible to obtain LEED credits.

The concept of eco-sustainability is nowadays a recurring theme. Unfortunately, this often over-used word is not always backed up by solid facts.

MAPEI are firm believers in “sustainable” construction work which means savings in natural resources, water, energy and non-renewable materials along with a reduction in emissions and liquid and solid waste materials. For us, ecological building is not just a drop in the ocean, it is more like a stone tossed into a pond, a single action which sets off a chain reaction of events with far-reaching consequences.

MAPEI’s commitment to eco-sustainable building may be demonstrated by the latest figures. MAPEI invests 5% of annual turnover and 12% of their workforce in research and development activities. And 70% of this sum is channelled into the development of Eco products.

As far back as the 1970’s, MAPEI launched a range of products with water dispersion and low solvent content qualities in to the market. This commitment was backed up by research programmes to develop products with a low emission level of volatile organic compounds (VOC) with no solvents. This development improves the quality of the air whilst using these products inside buildings; therefore as a result, the well-being of both those who apply the products and those who use the buildings are safeguarded. The ECO range was created.

Since October 2005, these products have been certified and labelled EC1 (very low emission level of volatile organic compounds) and since June 2010, EMICODE EC1 PLUS (very low emission level of volatile organic compounds-PLUS), both issued by the German Institute GEV (Gemeinschaft Emissionskontrollierte Verlegewerkstoffe, Klebstoffe und Bauprodukte e.V.), association for the control of emissions in flooring installation; Mapei is also a member.

Some Mapei products are also certified Blauer Engel: this award also guarantees the quality of the air for both floor layers and end users.

Both GEV and Blauer Engel are extremely severe classification systems, which assess the possible emission levels of volatile organic compounds of products used in the building industry on a short-term basis (3 days) and on a long-term basis (28 days) from when they are applied, using special environmental

simulation chambers. Both awards consider products to be low emission on the basis of their Total VOC (the sum of all volatile organic compounds released within a certain period of time after being laid) and the absence of emissions of carcinogenic composites, such as benzene, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, dioxins, etc.

Blauer Engel evaluates not only the emissions of volatile organic compounds, but also the content of compounds considered as carcinogenic, teratogen or mutagen, which must be absent in the product. Moreover, Blauer Engel establishes the content limits for other compounds, such as the biocides which are used.Blauer Engel differs from other rating system in that it is not divided into different classes, but is rather a single certification: the product either complies or does not comply with Blauer Engel.

MAPEI also has a number of labels which guarantee their eco-sustainability according to the different requirements of local markets (for example, M1 certification for the Finnish market).

MAPEI’s contribution to the eco-sustainable building industry may be summarised as follows:

– The use of materials which improve the quality of the air:systems for laying floors and coatings with low emission levels of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and pre-blended products with low-dust technology which reduce the amount of dust given off when used by up to 90%.

– Products which contain recycled raw materials.

– The use of local raw materials leading to a reduction of CO2 emissions.

– Thermal insulation systems to reduce energy consumption for heating and cooling buildings.

– Long-lasting systems to increase the service life of work carried out.

– High-yield products with lower consumption and, therefore,a reduction of emission levels during the production, transport and use of the products.

The synergy between these characteristics has allowed us to make complete systems available for our clients for preparing substrates and laying various types of coatings (parquet, ceramic, stone, resilients, textiles, etc.). An “ECO-Sustainable” system may comprise pre-blended mortars for normal and quick-setting screeds, primers to promote bonding, consolidating and waterproofing substances, thixotropic and self-levelling smoothing and levelling compounds and adhesives for laying ceramic and stone tiles, parquet, resilients and textiles. The concept of system therefore, which has always been a fundamental aspect of the MAPEI philosophy, is also valid for eco-sustainable building projects.

The average LEED-certified building uses 32% less electricity per yearthan a traditional building, accordingto the EPA.

For details, visit the U.S. Green Building Council’s Website at www.usgbc.com.

The Italian protocol is different to the American version regarding the classification of materials with low levels of emissions. In fact, the American LEED standards includes an assessment method for VOC based on SCAQMD (South Coast Air Quality Management District) Rule 1168, which is used to calculate VOC content in g/l. For the Italian protocol, on the other hand, low-emission materials are those products which comply with the GEV EC1 classification, and the assessment of VOC emissions is expressed in µg/m³. The Italian protocol, therefore, is much more severe than the American version.Along the entire process, from the design phase right up to the actual construction phase, LEED requires a global approach to the project which is considered a single entity, rather like a living organism.LEED certification supplies the market with a shared approach, a unique measurable standard for every aspect dealt with.

LEED

According to the USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council), LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) represents excellence in energy and eco-sustainable design and encourages and accelerates the adoption of building practices and eco-sustainable development on a global scale through the creation and application of performance standards which are universally shared and accepted.LEED is a voluntary system based on consent, for the design, construction and administration of high-performance sustainable buildings. The LEED certification system is a standard which is applied in more than 100 countries worldwide including Italy, thanks to the commitment of GBC ITALIA which has created a local version, and indicates the requirements for constructing environmentally sustainable buildings in terms of energy and the consumption of environmental resources involved in the construction process.

Obligatory LEED certification

LEED certification is obligatory for constructions for the USA federal government and the Canadian government. The private sector is also starting to require LEED certified buildings because their economic advantages (for example, a 32% saving in energy consumption) are well documented. There are also cases of Leed-certified projects in other countries.

HOW cAN MAPEI HELP THEIR cUSTOMERS BE GREEN?

Environmental responsibility is the new priority for working practices and products adopted in the building industry. As the construction sector increases its understanding of “green” buildings, MAPEI keeps up with the new developments by continuously increasing their range of innovative products and services which respect the Leed regulations.Numerous Mapei products in the four categories described in this article for laying floors respect Leed requirements. In fact, Mapei has developed products such as Ultralite S1 which contains 30% of recycled materials and Ultraflex S2 Mono and Ultraflex S2 Quick which also contain recycled materials.Mapei also offers the Ultrabond EcO range of adhesives,

characterised by their extremely low emission level of volatile organic compounds (VOC). The innovative Low Dust technology applied in Keraflex Maxi S1 and Ultralite S1 mortars help reduce the amount of dust given off and, therefore, plays an important part in meeting LEED requirements regarding the quality of the air in buildings. Also, many products for laying floors are classified as EMICODE EC1.Another important Mapei product is the Mapetherm® thermal insulation system, approved according to European Technical Approval ETA 04/0061 and guaranteed by the company’s Work Replacement Policy. This system insulates against both heat and cold, solves the problem of thermal dispersion and offers a reduction in energy consumption and costs. It also increases the value of a property and guarantees well-being and comfort in all weather conditions. For walled buildings, MAPEI has also developed products for renovating, protecting and decorating walled buildings. They are made using lime and Eco-pozzolan and solve the problem of the dehumidification of brick, stone and tuff walls, including those of historical interest, subject to deterioration caused by capillary rising damp. And, since humidity in the walls is expelled very quickly, rooms are more healthy and comfortable. In the following pages is a summary of MAPEI products for laying ceramic, stone, resilient, textile and wooden floors which help to gain credits for LEED certification.

The quality of “indoor” air is strongly influenced by volatile organic compounds released from floors, walls, furniture, adhesives, paint……Adhesives, self-levelling products, primers and materials generally used in the building industry are analysed in environmental test chambers to assess their emission levels of VOC into the air (the GEV testing method) and classified with an EMICODE class N°.This system has been registered by GEV to classify products with controlled emission levels:

EMIcODE Ec1 Plus: very low emission level - plus

EMIcODE Ec1: very low emission level

EMIcODE Ec2: low emission level

EMIcODE Ec3: not low emission level

The test chambers, made from steel and glass, have a volume of 210 litres, controlled humidity and temperature (T=23 + 2°C; RH= 50 + 5%) and a load factor of 0.45 m²/m³.This parameter is the ratio between the surface of the test sample and the volume of the chamber and simulates a typical situation in a normal apartment. The chamber is flushed with nitrogen at a given flow rate and speed so that the air in the chamber is completely replaced every two hours.

The cartridges are then developed using

a thermal desorber. The volatile organic

compounds are separated by gas

chromatography, identified with a mass

detector and quantified with a flame

ionization detector.

At pre-set times, a sample of air

is drawn from the chamber with a

pump connected to an adsorbent

cartridge which captures all the volatile

compounds present in the air in the

chamber.

The test sample is transferred into

the test chamber immediately after

preparation.

The sample is mixed, weighed and

applied on a non-absorbent glass plate.
