More than grapes, the intoxicat-ing serenity and abundance ofnature in the tiny town ofNaples have always been its attraction.Tucked in at the bottom of the little Dngerof the Finger Lakes, the natural abundanceand safety of the Naples Valley was Drst rec-ognized by Indians Eeeing the turmoil ofwar, more than a century before Columbusarrived.Based on information compiled by Indianhistorian Arthur Caswell Parker, Naples na-tive Robert J. Vierhile writes in his book,Nundawao, Be Oldest Seneca Village,Be Drst settlers in the Naples Valley(Koyendaga Valley) were Indians seeking apeaceful place to live.Be Indian migration apparently took placein the late 1300s and their peaceful life inthe glens and hills carved out by glaciersmillions of years before, was short lived. By1789 surveyors had mapped the area andthe Drst white settlers arrived by ice sledsvia Canandaigua Lake in Feb. 1790. Bytreaty, the Indians had only 20 years to va-cate.But the Indians would always think of thevalley and Bare Hill on its eastern shore,which would also give rise to the white vil-lages name, as their ancestral home.Parker indicates that the Naples Valley isthe birthplace of the Seneca Nation.Bare Hill, according to Parker holds aprominent place in Seneca Indian tradition,so much so that its is still celebrated todaywhen residents around Canandaigua Lakelight Dres making a Ring of Fire to celebratethe end of summer.For white settlers Bare Hill also became afocal point.Be Drst white settlers in the valley were theSamuel Parish family followed two monthslater by William Clark, Ephraim Clevelandand Nathan Watkins families. Be area be-came known as Watkinstown. In 1795 thename changed to Middletown because thecommunity was located halfway between

Bath and Canandaigua.Early industries included an iron foundry,knife factory, tanneries, wagon shops, ash-eries, pulling and carding mills, shoe shopsand cheese factories, the Naples Record re-ported.In 1808 the settlements name was changedto Naples upon the suggestion of a visitorfrom France who likened the area toNaples, Italy and nearby Bare Hill to Mt.Vesuvius.As he guided this reporter on a tour ofNaples, town historian William Vierhilesaid, And it is true Bare Hill does resembleMt. Vesuvius. I was stationed in Naples inWorld War II and saw it for myself.In 1848 E.A. McKay planted the Drst vine-yard from which the Naples wine industrywould grow to world-wide fame.Be climate and location here are ideal forgrape growing. Be lake moderates the cli-mate giving us a few more weeks of warmweather than in other parts of the state andwe get the morning sun on the hillsidewhere the grapes were Drst grown. Todaythe hillside isnt used as much because thegrape harvesters only work on the Eat,Vierhile explained.It wasnt until 1882 when John J. Widmercame from Switzerland to Naples that thewine industry bloomed. Be Naples Recordreported, Be word was that Naples had anideal climate and ideal soil for grape cul-ture.Widmer bought a portion of the Napleshillside and planted his Drst vines in 1883following Hiram MaxDeld Jr., who had es-tablished the MaxDeld Wine Cellar in 1880.Widmer had immediate success and whileWidmer wine was sold in Rochester andPatterson, NJ, in 1882 it was reported that364 tons of grapes were shipped to Boston.Widmer wines Eourished and it became themajor employer, producing grape productssuch as altar wine and a Port-Tokay-Sherrytonic sold by druggists under the nameWidmers Tonic, during Prohibition. In1960 the Widmer era ended when the win-ery was sold. In the last part of the 20 cen-

tury production was limited, and accordingto Vierhile the town became a bedroomcommunity for Canandaigua and nearbyRochester. Recently the former Widmerproduction facility and vineyards were pur-chased by the Hazlitt Winery, whose own-ers have promised to increase productionand employment, Vierhile said.Broughout the years Naples also nour-ished the attributes which Drst brought set-tlers.In 1882 a fossilized tree was found inGrimes Glen. Believed to be the oldest formof a tree in the state, it is preserved in theNew York State Museum. Be Glen becamea popular picnic and Dshing site. Today anew bridge gives easy access to Dsherman.On April 1, 1961 the Drst Naples CreekRainbow Trout Derby was held. Today aDshing site on the creek provides wheel-chair and handicap access.Be Drst Naples Grape Festival was held in1961 only to be discontinued. Revitalizedin 1988 the Grape Festival is now a premierevent featuring hundreds of vendors, craFs-men and entertainers in September. Muchof the celebration takes place at the townhall, erected in 1872 as a living memorial tothe more than 200 veterans of the Civil War.Along with attractive turn-of-the-centuryarchitecture and historic buildings Naplesalso boasts St. Januarius Catholic Church.Built in 1965 from a design by Rochester ar-chitect James Johnson it reEects the shapeof a grape leaf and the cement cast walls arestudded with stained glass ovals represent-ing the diCerent grape varieties grown inthe valley. Today the grape industry continues toEourish in unexpected ways. In 1966 IreneBouchard baked the Drst commercial grapepie at her bake shop. By 1987 grape pie bak-ing had become the leading cottage indus-try in the village with more than 35,000baked and sold nationwide. In 2012 over50,000 pies are baked and sold annually asthe grape industry continues to Eourish inthe Koyendaga Valley Drst settled by theSenecas.
