Big questions for 2009
• Is there (still) room for new (reasonable) consortial deals?– e-journals: maybe CUP and a few more ...
• And money (both at a university level and at a consortium level)?– Universities are supporting 80% of the costs, and some
libraries invest almost all of their budget in consortial deals– CBUC is funding nearly 10% of the total cost of BDC e-
journals (7M€ approx.)– No new incomes on the horizon
D2/SELL/08 SELL Spain2008.ppt 19/32
New deals for 2009?
• Some central money available
• But must be invested in one-time-payments (not new annual subscriptions)
• Working on proposals:– e-books?– backfiles?

Summary Summary

BDC’s 10th anniversary!
• First negotiations started in 1998: Academic Press, Mathscinet, Econlit, Medline, ERIC, Aranzadi
• Now it’s a good time for evaluation (and for promoting access when needed)
• Some partial reports in the last years• Now we have 2 recent ones, and more complete:
– A thesis– A report (under construction)

Doctoral thesis about BDC
“La cooperació bibliotecària en l’era digital: consorcis i adquisicions de revistes a les biblioteques universitàries catalanes” by Dr. Miquel Térmens i Graells

Main conclusion
• Usage level differences among universities is not related/balanced with their size, but with the following issues:
– Historical level of the collections available in their libraries
– Research level at each university
D2/SELL/08 SELL Spain2008.ppt 24/32
Report (under construction)
• Description of usage trends at BDC 1999-2007• Study objects: e-journals + databases + e-books• Data sources: usage statistics from publishers
• Commissioned to a faculty member from Universitat de Barcelona School of Librarianship (Àngel Borrego)
• Useful to evaluate and to decide renewals
• Analysis under construction, but first conclusions available now (full analysis in the next months)
D2/SELL/08 SELL Spain2008.ppt 25/32
Some conclusions (by now)
• Full text is prefered– E-journals usage increases– Databases usage not that much (or even
descend)
• “New” deals have impact on the usage of the “old” ones
• (Again) Usage levels are not related to size
