Since purchasing his officefrom a pre-existing owner in2003, Dr. Charles Shin lookedforward to customizing anddesigning it to make the spacehis own. Previously owning anotherpractice, he was attracted to the space inStouffville, ON because of its primelocation, which he hoped would revive hispatient flow. His former office not only hadpoor parking and very little pedestriantraffic, but also it lacked the space toexpand and incorporate new technology,a factor that was very important to him.

Dr. Shin’s new office is located next toShoppers Drug Mart and a familyphysician, which enables him to welcomemore patients through word of mouth andfoot traffic. He offers general dentistry, including endodontic and orthodonticservices.

To help Dr. Shin decide on which newequipment and technologies to incorporate, his Henry Schein Sales Consultant,Corinne Smith, suggested he take a“discovery trip” to Pelton & Crane, wherehe could see and touch new designs for hisrenovation. In addition to upgrading thetechnology in his office, Dr. Shin alsofocused on the ergonomic flow of his newspace, creating more operatories and amore workable space for his staff to use.“Some limitations in the old office werelack of space. The staff room and doctor’soffice had to utilize an apartment-sizedspace on the second floor while all of themain floor space was used for operatories,”Shin comments.

Divine details create the big picture atShin DentistryAfter the renovation, however, all of Dr.Shin’s grievances with the former layoutwere assuaged with a new staff room, anew private office that doubles as a “mancave” for himself, as well as a consultationroom of which he is most proud. “I amvery pleased to have a consultation roomwhere I can discuss treatment plans withpatients in private, rather than in theoperatory,” says Dr. Shin.

The waiting room incorporates a number of elements to createa calm and relaxing environment.

A collection of artwork creates an attractive accent on largewall surfaces.

The four new operatories showcase the latest in technology andfeature Pelton & Crane Spirit 3000 chair packages andRenaissance cabinets, KaVo handpieces, a Pelton & Crane DeltaQ autoclave, Solaris stericentre, and a SciCan Statim 2000sterilizer. He also utilized Henry Schein’s consultative services, including their Practice Analysis and Business DiscoveryMeetings, to help streamline and maximize his business potential.

The new décor at Shin Dentistry has a fresh and modern feel, stretching from the operatories to the patient waiting room. Theoperatories are outfitted with commercial-grade vinyl flooringthat make for easy cleaning and Berber carpeting in the receptionarea. A stone feature wall and oversized club chairs in thepatient waiting area create an inviting and relaxing space forpatients before their appointments. A collection of wall art andautomotive art pieces from the doctor’s private collection add tothe sleek and modern ambiance.

The new environment at Shin Dentistry has had countlesspositive effects on his staff and his patients, and has eliminatedmany of his complaints about the previous office. “Patients findthe new space very warm and inviting,” Dr. Shin remarks. “Thestaff is happy to be in a newer space with better ventilation, newer finishes, and successful working infrastructure.”

Dr. Shin has advice for dentists who decide to take on a similarproject. “Don’t let your ego write cheques that your body can’tcash. Yes, it’s nice to have your dream office, but when you letyour ego get carried away, you can really get yourself intotrouble. Also, building an office requires much more planningthan one might anticipate. Always try to stay three steps aheadbecause it is really easy to get ten steps behind.”

The most meaningful part of building this practice for Dr. Shin isthat it is uniquely his and reflects his style, unlike the layout anddesign of the practice before he remodeled. “My name is on thedoor and over the whole business.” he says fondly. “It’s all mine, and I am proud to say that this is my practice.”

“Patients find the new space very warm

and inviting,” Shin remarks.
