The Art of Keeping it Simple 02 – 06 Mar | Mixed Media£325 Marion Taylor

Transform the way you work with tools and techniques to open up a fresh approach to your work. You will learn to control your colour palette, create interesting surfaces and overlay with strong marks and textures. Painting and drawing in the context of St Ives modernism will set the tone for this course, looking at Ben Nicholson, William Scott and Patrick Heron.

You will work in the studio from still life as well as make the most of the town of St Ives and its coastal landscape that so inspired these artists. The fourth day will be a self study day; a time and space to experiment with what you have learnt. The final day will bring together all your learning under the guidance of the tutor.

Abstracting the Figure in Paint 16 – 19 Mar | Mixed Media£330 Marion Taylor + Gary Long

Using oils, mixed media and drawing you will work from the nude and clothed figure and explore the exciting relationship between abstraction and representation. An ideal course for those who want to advance their figure painting in a challenging direction.

You will explore your needs and desires as an artist so you can understand your conceptual approach to making work. In the last two days, you will develop work using acrylics and oils. This transformational four days will give you the freedom to have fun with your painting.

Turner Sea and Sunsets

13 – 15 Apr| Waterbased£235 Hilary Jean Gibson

JMW Turner with his unique ability to represent the elemental power of the sea is the inspiration for this three day course. The course runs on the afternoon and evening on the first two days. This enables you to capture the rich depth of light in St Ives at dusk and the dramatic fiery sunsets over Porthmeor Beach. You will study Turner’s rapidly made and highly expressive watercolours, known as ‘colour beginnings’. Create your own vibrant watercolour, denote the sea and sky and transform colour into boundless seascapes.

20 – 22 April | Oils£245 Alice Mumford

Artists are fascinated and challenged with looking through windows in their work. Vermeer, Pierre Bonnard and Winifred Nicholson each found their own solutions. This course examines particular problems with tackling space in paintings. It gives you insights and skills developed by artists to overcome these challenges.

Over the three days, students will paint still life with views of Porthmeor beach and St Ives from the studio windows. You will work towards developing and completing a single large scale painting in oils.

“Gary was inspiring. Instructive in a gentle way but specific in his tuition.” J. Kirtland Expressive Still Life – Spring Flowers

This course will build your skills and confidence so you can create rich and expressive oil paintings. You will learn to capture the shape, colour and essence of a still life of spring flowers. The tutor will guide you in the use of oils so you develop your own rich painterly style. Capture the essential nature of a subject in a fresh and colourful way and take away a finished piece of work. Exploring Form and Abstraction 27 Apr – 01 May | Mixed Media£345 Marion Taylor + Liz Luckwell

The inspiration for this five-day course is a trio of renowned artists that worked in St Ives at the height of the Modernist era. Delve into the abstracted forms of Barbara Hepworth, the vibrant collages of Sandra Blow and the intense mark making of Wilhelmina Barns Graham.

You will be emerged in the very same environment that inspired them. Visit the Hepworth Garden and work in the Porthmeor studio complex that overlooks the ocean. Develop your own response using painting, drawing, simple printmaking and collage. Over the five days, you will form your own personal response to your time here in St Ives.

This course will lead you through three unique and experimental drawing methods that explore natural forms, developed by the artist Gemma Anderson. You will draw out in the field, the studio and the museum and use simple watercolour techniques inspired by Paul Klee.

Each day will introduce a different method that combines chance with a vigorous drawing system. Your imagination will emerge from the discipline of this close observation. You will work from material gathered from the beaches around St Ives, from the museum collections of Tate St Ives and the Hepworth Museum. There will also be unique specimens loaned from Exeter University zoology collections. The three days will inform your art practice and change the way you see the world around you.

“This course has been the best course I have ever attended! It’s mind blowing - the creative practical work has and will assist my personal development and has enhanced my identity as a human being. I can see that I can apply the methods to my art practice and my life in general.” Jane Moore – Natural Forms Staging the Figure – Breaking the Rules 11 – 14 May | Mixed Media£330 Ilker Cinarel + Liz Luckwell

Explode the myth of working from the figure. This is not about learning the correct way to render the human form, it is about your own creative discovery and breaking the rules. To do this you will use different materials including charcoal, pastel and acrylic. Each day the nude model will pose on a theatrical stage with props and dramatic lighting that will give you a rich and inspiring scenario. You will start by generating images using cut-outs, print, and collage with paint. Then choose some of these to develop in the last two days in more depth.

It will help you take your painting to the next level.

Working in the studio from still life you will explore her use of light and the effect of using different greys, some warm, some cool, to paint with an unexpected vitality. This is a fast paced and vibrant course taking a different approach to the familiar genre of still-life.

SUPPORTING THE ST IVES SCHOOL OF PAINTING

GIFT IN YOUR WILLIt’s easy to leave a gift in your will to St Ives School of Painting. Just make sure you include the following details:

Charity name: St Ives Art School trading as St Ives School of Painting

Registered Address: St Ives School of Painting, Porthmeor Studios, Back Road West, St Ives, TR26 1NG.

Registered charity no: 1146825

CONTACT USWe would love to know if you plan to leave us a bequest as we would like to thank you. If you would like to talk to us about either making a bequest or supporting something specific, please email Alison Sharkey at [email protected] or call 01736 797180.

Every gift, however large or small, will make a difference to us. Leaving a bequest is one of the most powerful and effective ways to ensure the School continues to thrive for future generations.

The St Ives School of Painting is a registered charity. For more than 75 years, it has created a welcoming creative space for all. The world may have changed dramatically in those years but the School enjoys a timeless atmosphere. The loyalty of students like you, who appreciate the value of this magical place, ensure we continue to thrive today. We want to ensure that this special place welcomes students for another hundred years of painting and drawing.

Each year we teach and inspire over 2000 people of all ages and abilities. We manage to do this through the support of students from the fees they pay as well as grants and donations. Please help us to continue this work by considering leaving a bequest in your will. A bequest from Alison Holt from Norfolk helped us to house our growing library in a specially commissioned bookcase. Built from salvaged wood rescued during the renovation, it is now a permanent part of Porthmeor Studios for future generations to enjoy. Other bequests have enabled us to improve our studio facilities as well as support projects in the community.

Your bequest will help keep our studios running all year round. It will provide special opportunities for people to take part in the School, like our Young Artists Programme. With your help, we can ensure many others discover and enjoy this special place for many years to come.
