A very warm welcome to Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA). Whether you travelled from near or far we are delighted that you can join us for the fourteenth edition of World Bio Markets.

Over three days in the Dutch capital we are proud to bring the global Bio Market Insights community together to learn, meet, share and do business. This year’s event, the second since it joined our portfolio, is a little different from previous editions. We believe for the bio-based economy to achieve the success that we all believe it can, a new integrated approach is required to unite the industry and make it more commercially focussed. No longer should companies with the same goals, be they chemical or materials producers, technical experts or consumer facing brands, operate in silos, with only irregular communication and engagement.

To ensure that the whole value chain connects, in support of our daily media coverage through Bio Market Insights and our Quarterly magazine, we have rebooted World Bio Markets and now have a truly integrated agenda. To give insight into how industry sectors really work, our Building a Bio-Based Industry stream focuses on some of most innovative and successful markets – truly taking our delegates on the journey from lab to market. Our Scale Up & Process Technology stream provides extensive detail on the technical process of the path to commercialisation, giving real world insights to the challenges, solutions and areas of growth available for those manufacturing bio-based products and chemicals. Whilst for those facing the consumer directly, in Sustainable Brands we look at the questions the public are asking you, and how bio-based and sustainable products can provide the answers.

In addition to our carefully crafted sessions, we also have lively and engaging keynotes from inside and outside the industry, on-stage discussions between C-level executives, interactive roundtables, results orientated workshops. And let’s not forget that also new for this year Bio-Based Rising Stars, the hottest and most exciting start-ups are to be found in attendance. Plus the winners of the 2019 Bio Market Insights Awards will be revealed at ceremony. All this on top of an expo of the leading bio-based companies from all over the world, and over ten hours networking time.

A big thanks to all our sponsors, exhibitors, partners, advisory board members, supporters, speakers and you the attendees – without whom this event would simply not have been possible. We appreciate your support on our mission to bring the community together and look forward to many more future collaborations.

If you have any questions or need anything at all, please don’t hesitate to contact me or the team on site – we are here to help.

Thanks again and have a great few days.

MEET THE

Ashleigh Environmental is a cleantech company from Ireland. Our core product Biowave™ is a new and ground breaking bio-technology that harnesses microwave energy to valorise organic by-products to improve biogas production yield

and process reaction time. The modularity of the technology lends itself to be a bolt on for an existing biogas plant or in the construction of new biogas plants. The technology has being demonstrated at industrial pilot scale for the agri biogas market and we’re also looking at other new and exciting applications across the broader waste to energy market.

PRESENTING IN BIO-STARS 5X5Bloom is a Swiss chemical company, which mines renewable chemicals in plant materials. Based on two core values – efficiency & selectivity – Bloom is able to manufacture cost-competitive green molecules for a broad

range of applications. To achieve this, Bloom relies on a proprietary technology able to mine the most abundant biopolymers on Earth with unprecedented yields. This revolutionary pretreatment method suppresses degradation pathways during the fractionation process and sets new standards in the field. Bloom’s disruptive selectivity towards target molecules significantly lowers the separation costs and limits the overall environmental impact.

PRESENTING IN BIO-STARS 5X5Cellutech develops new cutting edge materials based on wood. Established in 2013, we provide innovative technologies and products that meet today’s need for a sustainable future. CellufoamTM is a sustainable lightweight foam

material based on wood pulp. The technology offers a biodegradable alternative to a wide range of products. The extremely lightweight and shock absorbing properties make it an especially attractive replacement for fossil-based foams in packaging, such as Styrofoam. The environmentally friendly production process results in a material that is renewable, compostable, repulpable and recyclable as paper packaging. Since October 2018 Cellutech is a part of Stora Enso.

PRESENTING IN BIO-STARS 5X5Chip[s] Board® is a biomaterial innovation company with the core objective of finding value where others see waste. Our philosophy is that a circular-economy in ‘waste’ management and material production will create a new

sustainable model; utilising the abundant resources we currently have, rather than generating and processing virgin materials. Chip[s] Board addresses the damage of material manufacturing and disposal by developing materials made from natural byproducts, created with low water use and zero production waste, containing no harmful chemicals or nonbiodegradable materials. Chip[s] Board’s first material, Chip Particle Board [CPB], is an eco-friendly particulate board made from industrial potato ‘waste’.

Chrysalix Technologies is an Imperial College spin-out company developing an innovative biomass fractionation process using low-cost ionic liquids. Currently, our society is heavily relying on the use of crude oil while products

are discarded at the end of their lives. We want to change that, which is why we are developing novel chemical processes that enable us to live more sustainably in a clean world. Our first product is the BioFlex process that uses waste wood and agricultural by-products as well as sustainably grown biomass to produce a greener alternative to today’s petrochemical industry while providing unwanted waste materials with a new purpose.

Kaffe Bueno is a biotechnology company using coffee’s by-product as a platform to produce natural ingredients for cosmetics, nutraceuticals and functional foods. Our mission is to unlock coffee’s health potential where harmful

emissions are minimised and coffee’s by-product usability is maximised. By extending coffee’s economical life, we will be able to give back to the people we owe its existence; farmers. Our vision is to transform the way people perceive coffee; from a tool to make it until the end of the day, to a magical bean with the potential of improving human health by using what lies inside it.

In agriculture, when produce doesn’t meet the highest grade, growers are forced to sell it for a loss. At MycoNourish, we add value for growers. We do this with beneficial fungi, known as ‘mycorrhizae’, which work in symbiosis with crops

to enhance yields. Unlike other products, which provide ‘one size fits all’ solutions, our fungi are customised to suit specific crops, and tailored to solve the most important problem in each one. Our fungi are highly adaptable, and while we can improve quality in strawberry production, applications range from improving water uptake in semi-arid regions to improving pollination.

PRESENTING IN BIO-STARS 5X5NUATAN is a joint venture which was founded in 2018 for the purpose of commercial exploitation of new generation of bioplastic material – patented blend of PLA/PHB with unique properties and processability. The company was

founded by crafting plastics! studio – an innovative designer studio based in Berlin and Bratislava, which has won several international design awards and acknowledgements for their sustainable bioplastic products and Panara s.r.o. – the material know-how owner, focused on R&D of sustainable polymers based in Nitra, Slovakia. The material brand is oriented to value-added durable products.

PRESENTING IN BIO-STARS 5X5Prisma Renewable Composites is a biomaterials company engineering material solutions that incorporate natural, renewable lignin into high-value composites ranging from plastics to carbon fibers. Prisma’s team and IP portfolio

ensures an effective bridge between global lignin suppliers and consumers of everyday materials. Prisma is launching our first product, “BioLAN™,” as a lower cost, higher strength, low-VOC replacement to ABS plastic. In June 2018, Prisma closed an investment from Domtar Corporation, further securing North America’s largest suitable lignin supply which will be specifically tailored to support Prisma’s business plan.

Roof Maxx, The World’s First All-Natural Asphalt Roof Rejuvenator. As an asphalt roof ages the petrochemical oils dry out causing brittleness of the waterproofing asphalt. Brittle asphalt cracks during expansion and contraction

eventually requiring replacement. Roof Maxx’s all-natural bio-oil replaces dried-out petrochemical oils restoring pliability and waterproofing protection by re-flexibilization of the hydrocarbon backbone. A simple spray-on application, each treatment (repeatable process) extends a roof’s service life for a period of 5 years at a fraction of the cost of complete roof replacement. Roof Maxx’s vision is to be a positive force in roofing sustainability through the increased service life of asphalt roofing systems.

New for 2019, and selected from an impressive set of applicants, discover ten of the most dynamic and inspiring start-ups in the industry right here at World Bio Markets. Testfakta Bio-based is a voluntary certification and labelling system for bio-based products, aimed at making it easier for consumers to choose goods made from renewable materials. Fossil-based materials can often be replaced by bio-based alternatives. Clear and transparent labelling call attention to, and thus help to boost demand for bio-based alternatives and to raise the proportions of renewable raw materials in existing goods. The certification rests partly on the findings from technical analysis of products’ carbon-based content, quantifying the proportion of organic carbon from renewable sources.
