10 REASONS

Many of the leading cruise lines include so much in their prices from drinks with lunch and dinner to free coach travel to shore excursions which is why river cruising is such good value for money. All the river cruise lines include accommodation and food as standard; however the likes of Viking River Cruises and Avalon Cruises also include daily excursions visiting sites including UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The excursions on offer are well worth attending to ensure you get the very best from each destination. These will no doubt make your river cruise an exceptional experience.

1 S O M U C H I S I N C L U D E D !

Many of the tours led by river cruise companies use microphones and provide passengers with their own headphones to ensure that you can hear what there is to know about where you are in the world, without the distraction from a crowd of people around you. You never need to miss a thing this way; even in churches and cathedrals where your guide will need to be a quiet as possible. What makes this even better is that some cruise lines offer such tours for free, enhancing your whole river cruising experience..

6 L I S T E N V E R Y C A R E F U L LY

The size of river cruise vessels are governed by the length and width of the locks the ship has to get through! Most river cruise ships only hold between 100-200 passengers, some accommodate even less but generally no more than 250. This makes your cruise experience more personal, the atmosphere on board is cosy and friendly and with less passengers to attend to any request can be dealt with by staff instantly. The set dining time brings all the guests together to get to know each other and interact, you can also choose where you sit.

2 S M A L L & F R I E N D LY

Don’t like flying? There’s no need to fret as river cruise lines often offer alternative travel options to get you to your embarkation port in comfort. It is so easy to take the Eurostar, meaning your feet will never leave solid ground and can easily reach the city you require, from Amsterdam or Lyon to Vienna or Budapest.

7 N O N E E D T O F LY

Once settled on board there is nothing else to worry about...apart from what to wear to dinner! River cruising is a completely relaxing experience, visiting cities and towns no ocean ship could reach. You can spend your days how you wish to, if you want a day bursting with sights and information about the port you are visiting, then we suggest you take the shore excursions, if you would like to do things at your own pace and visit certain places you can do exactly that. There is no pressure!

3 I T ’ S S U P E R E A S Y

As well as popular European itineraries, you can enjoy more exotic river cruise holidays to exciting destinations such as the Nile in Egypt, Yangtze in China, Mekong in Cambodia and many more. As smaller, more versatile vessels, river cruise ships can offer more insight into the heart of such places as they are able to access many more ports than ocean cruise ships.

8 CRUISE TO VERY DIFFERENT PLACES

Unlike Ocean cruising you will always have view of the towns and cities during your cruise. A typical river cruise sees half a day ashore exploring and half a day sailing, however don’t expect long sea days! The time is also used for talks from guest speakers, wine or beer tasting sessions or cookery demonstrations. You can be sure to find plenty of activity on board.

4 W A T C H T H E W O R L D G O B Y

Many people worry about getting sea sick, however, joining a river cruise will make your cruising experience an enjoyable and relaxing one across gentle waters, with next to no motion felt on-board. The one thing that river cruisers should bear in mind is that high or low tides may affect itineraries, as the vessels will be unable to cruise under bridges. In such cases, coaches will be provided to the key attractions in each port of call.

9 I T ’ S S M O O T H S A I L I N G

Most river cruise ships offer entirely river-view staterooms throughout, meaning you will always be able to appreciate the beautiful scenery from the comfort of your stateroom or balcony. So, you will not have to worry about missing out on some of the best views of fascinating ports of call along the world’s most scenic rivers.

5 A R O O M W I T H A V I E W

Newer river cruise ships are a million miles away from the older tonnage that dominated the market until recently. Booking on a modern vessel will offer spacious and comfortable accommodation, many with balconies and in-cabin amenities. Most of these newly built ships offer Wi-Fi throughout their public areas to keep in touch with those back home, and flat screen televisions. Décor is more up to date and furnishings reflect this, making your river cruising experience as comfortable as possible.

YOUR ITINERARY

Day 1 Fly to Lyon You fly to Lyon, where you will be met and taken to the ship moored in Lyon’s picturesque historic centre.

Day 2 Lyon After your first splendid breakfast, you’ll have a leisurely start enjoying a guided tour of Lyon, one of France’s most interesting cities. As you enjoy your first lunch, the ship quietly slips its moorings, cruising upstream, catching your first glimpses of the vine-clad slopes of the hazy green Beaujolais hills. See the picturesque villages of Morgon, Fleury, Juliénas, Chénas and many more.

Day 3 Chalon & Beaune Rising this morning, you are berthed in Chalon, the gateway to Burgundy. On this morning’s tour you’ll see the picturesque villages that read like a top restaurant’s wine list - Meursault, Volnay, Pommard, Gevrey-Chambertin and many more, the source of some of world’s most sublime wines. Nearby is medieval Beaune, Burgundy’s wine capital, visit the cellars of one of the most traditional of winemakers for a tour and tasting.

Day 4 Vienne & Tournon Overnight, the ship has cruised almost imperceptibly south with breakfast in the ancient Roman stronghold of Vienne, established under Julius Caesar. Later, moor in the pretty provincial town of Tournon with its tree-lined avenues and across the river, the vine-covered hillsides produce Hermitage, yet another of the world’s most revered wines - a fitting view as you enjoy another exquisite dinner.

Day 5 Ardeche Gorges This morning you cruise effortlessly downstream. After lunch, explore one of France’s most outstanding natural wonders, the Ardèche Gorges. With caves, grottoes and natural sculptures, there are amazing views at every turn before returning to the gentler sides of the Rhône Valley and the ship in charming Viviers. The ship casts off through the famous giant lock at Bollène, as you relax over dinner.

Day 6 Provence, Arles & Pont du Gard This morning you wake under the azure-blue skies of deepest Provence. A guided tour will help you to appreciate the finer points of Arles’ magnificent Roman remains. After lunch, visit the amazing Roman aqueduct, the Pont du Gard, one of the wonders of the ancient world. Rejoining the ship, cruise along the Rhône during dinner passing the 13th century castle at Tarascon.

Day 7 Avignon As the morning light catches the red roofs of Avignon’s majestic medieval skyline, it’s a sight to behold over breakfast, after which you embark on a guided tour. After lunch, you are free to explore as you wish. This evening the Captain’s dinner takes place, serving specialities of the regions you have visited during your voyage of discovery through this fascinating country.

Day 8 After breakfast this morning you must reluctantly leave the ship and her dedicated crew as you transfer to the airport for your flight home.

WE’VE BEEN ONBOARDI was lucky enough to go on a taster River Cruise with Riviera Travel on their five star ship the MS Lord Byron. I loved the fact that you spent over night in the ports as you could relax more in the afternoon and evening and not have to worry about getting back to the ship on time for an evening departure. The excursions were fantastic and it was great that they were all included, so we didn’t have to dip into our Euros unless we wanted to buy souvenirs! I would definitely go as far as saying that that Riviera Travel are the best value for money…

As you enter the restaurant the mouth-watering aroma of roasting Provençal Lamb drifts tantalisingly from the galley. Smartly uniformed, friendly and intuitive waiting staff professionally guide you to your classically set table with its crisp white linen, premium quality European china, polished fine glassware and gleaming cutlery whilst freshly baked bread is immediately placed before you with effortless style.

You’re at home. Quality dining is an integral part of your river cruise experience – and our ships take this to the highest five-star levels with superb cuisine prepared by a dedicated and highly professional brigade of chefs.

Take a stroll on the Sun Deck as the river gradually awakes, and enjoy Early Risers’ tea or coffee and freshly baked pastries. The full breakfast buffet is a sumptuous affair with innumerable hot and cold options, plus a popular omelette station prepares dishes to order. Or if you prefer, why not enjoy continental breakfast in your cabin: breakfast in bed.

Enchanting scenery and riverside life drift gently by - priceless! Naturally complimentary tea and coffee are available throughout the day and a very comprehensive lunch buffet allows selection of as little or as much as you wish from an extensive and tempting selection. Don’t forget to leave some room for afternoon tea and the chef’s special patisserie – it’s just too tempting to ignore!

Our clients constantly tell us they love our informal free seating and smaller tables policy, quite unlike the inevitable regimentation of many cruise ships which is exactly the atmosphere we are trying to achieve. Then there’s the wine list. We take great pride in its excellent quality and style, including not only the classic choices but also an extensive range of local wines. Many of these are extremely well-priced, delightful hid-den gems and rarely marketed outside their production area.

An introduction to APT River Cruises

A P T R E V I E W S

APT stands for Australian Pacific Touring so, you guessed it, they’re an Australian river cruising line! They originally began in Melbourne in the 1920s, all because of a bus strike… Local man Bill McGeary put a bus onto the back of a truck during the strike to shuttle people around. One bus became two and then the family then started doing bus tours instead of travel routes – and eventually the empire developed into what it is today!

WE’VE BEEN ONBOARD

I have just been lucky enough to spend 3 fabulous nights and days cruising courtesy of Avalon Waterways, and let me tell you, they have been the best of days. Although I have experienced many of our ocean going cruise ships, large and small, this was my first ever river cruise, and I am completely sold on the whole experience. It has very much confirmed to me that I am a huge fan of the smaller vessel and having now tried sailing along rivers I now understand the attraction, and the benefits of river cruising...

WHY SCENIC

C A B I N L U X U R I O U S S H I P S B U T L E R S E R V I C E F O R A L L O U R G U E S T S

At Scenic, their approach is ‘ultra-all-

inclusive’ because they’ve taken what you’d

expect from an all-inclusive river cruise to

a whole new level. And when they say ‘all-

inclusive’, they really mean it - you can quite

feasibly just bring your passport, and leave

your wallet at home. Even the little things you

may not even notice such as port charges,

bottled water for excursions, Wi-Fi and tip-

ping, are all included.

Relax in your five star suite on their European river cruises, some of the most spacious on the continent’s waterways, and stroll out on to your own private, full-size balcony, complete with the ingenious Scenic ‘Sun Lounge’. One touch of a button transforms your entire bal-cony into a sun lounge to protect you from the elements. Where better to relax with a drink and take in the stunning vistas than from your own private oasis?

You won’t find a more luxurious fleet on Europe’s rivers; from the Port Laurent marble from Morocco in the Panorama Lounge to the handpicked art lining the walls. And of course, the exemplary personal service. Scenic’s meticulous attention to detail is visible as soon as you set foot onboard. The ships’ modern design features contemporary, luxurious finishes, fine woods and soft, high quality fabrics - all carefully selected with your comfort in mind. With at least one member of staff for every three guests, you can be sure of an outstanding level of service throughout your cruise, including a personal butler service for all guests.

Scenic’s renowned butler service is available

to every guest. You’ll be welcomed aboard

with a refreshing drink before being taken

through the luxury amenities of your cabin.

Whatever your cabin grade, your butler offers

YOUR OWN HAVEN OF LUXURY

Scenic strictly limit their guest and cabin numbers. Not out of pretension or pride, but because in our experience, we know guests appreciate a real sense of space. In fact, the wonderful scenery gliding by is often the only reminder you have that you’re actually on a ship. The Panorama Lounge is larger than any you’ll find on ordinary river cruise ships, and there is plenty of space to relax at the bar or River Café while taking in the breathtaking views. There are also outdoor areas including the Sun Deck, affording superb views of the ever-changing fairytale landscapes.

Aboard a Scenic Tours river cruise, you have a wonderfully diverse range of dining options to choose from; the informal all-day River Café, the intimacy of Portobellos Italian Restaurant, the elegance of the Crystal Dining Restaurant, the English tradition of high tea on our Riverview Terrace, and the exclusive Table La Rive for Danube Deck, Junior and Royal Suite guests. Refined to relaxed, al fresco to intimate, you truly are spoilt for choice.

While you’re onboard, all cocktails, spirits, beer and wine, are available with our compliments at any time.

Step into your suite and enjoy a spacious and peaceful haven complete with lavish touches throughout; exquisite L’Occitane toiletries and soft, luxurious bathrobes. The superior queen-size Scenic ‘Slumber Beds’ with fresh, crisp Egyptian cotton linen are a dream, while individual climate control and a pillow menu offer absolute comfort. Your suite or stateroom includes a flat-screen HDTV and Mac mini system, plus complimentary mini-bar and WiFi internet access. There’s also a personal safe for your valuables and a nightly turndown service.

WE’VE BEEN ONBOARDI recently had the pleasure, for the 1st time, to experience a River Cruise with Scenic. The ship looked stunning, I had seen plenty in brochures and on the net but to see one up close was great. As soon as I boarded I was met by a host of ship staff offering me hot towels, champagne and assistance – with Scenic absolutely everything is included. Also on hand were waiters or I could just go to the bar and order directly to the barman, it was quite clear though that I could be as lazy as it suited me. Even in the cheapest outside cabins there is a butler service...
