16th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C) A Sunday Reflection

Busyness seems to be the mark of the present age. We are always engaged in doing something. The technological advances that have made everyday life easier have also served to make us busier than ever. Even our “free” time is no longer free, as phones and computers keep us constantly connected. There is no rest.

And so, Martha’s plea in today’s gospel sounds familiar. She is busy, much as we are except for the fact that she is tending to the duties of hospitality. She is, much as we are, “anxious and worried about many things” (Lk10:41). It is enough to make her—and us—forget what is truly important. “Mary has chosen the better part” (10:42).

A time of introspection does not preclude activity. As we go on with our frantic lives, let us make room for some quiet time with the Lord. Let us bring to Him all our worries and anxieties and let us rest in His merciful Heart. Then we also will be choosing the better part, and it will not be taken from us. God bless you!

Reflexión Dominical La marca de esta era parece ser la ocupación constante. Siempre

estamos envueltos en hacer algo. Los avances de la tecnología que nos han hecho más fácil la vida diaria también han servido para que estemos más ocupados que nunca. Hasta nuestro tiempo “libre” ya no es tan libre, pues teléfonos y computadoras nos mantienen siempre conectados. No hay descanso.

La súplica de Marta en el evangelio de hoy nos es, pues, familiar. Está ocupada, tanto como nosotros, excepto que ella lo está con los deberes de la hospitalidad. Está, tanto como nosotros, “preocupada e inquieta por muchas cosas” (Lc 10,41). Eso hace que tanto ella como nosotros nos olvidemos de lo que verdaderamente importa: “María ha escogido la mejor parte” (10,42).

La introspección no impide la actividad. En nuestra agitada vida, dejemos un espacio para estar un rato en silencio con el Señor. Llevémosle todas nuestras preocupaciones y nuestras inquietudes y descansemos en Su Corazón misericordioso. Así también nosotros estaremos escogiendo la mejor parte, y no nos será quitada. Que Dios los bendiga.

Catholic Devotions: Grace Before Meals ST. THOMAS AQUINAS noted that bread, like water, has always provided

sustenance for man in the order of nature; yet, in its “natural” state, it also prefigured the unleavened bread of the Passover and … in turn foreshadowed the Holy Eucharist.

Every meal, then, [is] a celebration of God’s creation and his providence. By means of the common prayers, every meal [in the Old Testament] was united with the historic meals of the ancestors…. The New Testament shows us Jesus as he vividly brings all these meals to fulfillment.

[A meal] is, in the age of grace, the image of the banquet the saints know in heaven. When we “say grace” before (or after) our meals, we transform our homey family meals—and even our meals taken alone—into “sacraments” of God’s banquet. The prayer lends every meal an importance and dignity it might otherwise lack.

This doesn’t mean [our] meals will be stiff or joyless or unnecessarily formal. If anything, it should increase the joy, because an awareness of God’s presence will surely inspire us to love those around us all the more and all the better.

The question sometimes arises whether we should say grace in public places…. I think it’s always a good idea, even if we offer our prayer silently while making an unostentatious Sign of the Cross. This simple gesture sometimes has a profound effect on by-standers, and it has even marked the beginning of conversión for people who have witnessed it.

ha proporcionado sustento para el hombre en el orden natural; además, en ese estado “natural”, también es figura del pan ázimo de la Pascua y (…) al mismo tiempo figura de la Sagrada Eucaristía.

Cada comida es, pues, una celebración de la creación y de la providencia de Dios. Por medio de oraciones comunes, cada comida [en el Antiguo Testamento] se unía a las comidas históricas de los antepasados (…) En el Nuevo Testamento, Jesús lleva todas estas comidas a su plenitud.

En este tiempo de gracia [una comida] es imagen del banquete de los santos en el cielo. Cuando “bendecimos la mesa” antes (o damos gracias después) de nuestras comidas, transformamos esas comidas familiares—e incluso las que comemos estando solos—en “sacramentos” del banquete de Dios. La oración da a cada comida una importancia y dignidad que de otra manera no tendría.

The Blesseds /Los Beatos BLESSED ANNE OF ST. BARTHOLOMEW (1550-1626) —

Secretary and companion of St. Teresa of Avila, Anne of St. Bartholomew came from a poor family and was illiterate when she entered Carmel. The saint ordered her to learn to read and write and made Anne her secretary. She accompanied the saint in her foundational travels and Teresa died in the arms of this humble shepherd.

Her family opposed her entering the convent. They made Anne work hard in the fields and even threatened to kill her. She also was greatly tempted by the devil.

After St. Teresa’s death, Anne returned to Avila and was entrusted with introducing the reformed Carmel in France and the Low Countries. She was prioress of

several convents in France, where she met fierce opposition from her companions because of her humble origins. She was sent to Flanders in 1611, where she founded the convent at Antwerp, of which she was prioress until her death in 1626. Anne of St. Bartholomew was beatified by Benedict XV in 1917.

BEATA ANA DE SAN BARTOLOMÉ (1550-1626) — Secretaria y compañera de Santa Teresa de Jesús, Ana de San Bartolomé provenía de una familia pobre y era analfabeta cuando entró al Carmelo. La santa le ordenó aprender a leer y escribir y la hizo su secretaria. Ana la acompañó en sus viajes fundacionales y Teresa murió en los brazos de esta pobre pastora.

Encontró fuerte oposición para entrar al convento por parte de su familia, quienes la hicieron trabajar duramente en el campo y llegaron a amenazarla de muerte, y sufrió grandes tentaciones del demonio.

A la muerte de Santa Teresa, regresó a Ávila y se le encomendó la introducción del Carmelo reformado en Francia y los Países Bajos. Fue priora de varios conventos en Francia, lo que le ocasionó gran oposición por parte de sus compañeras a causa de su origen humilde. Enviada a Flandes en 1611, fundó el convento de Amberes, el cual gobernó hasta el fin de su vida en 1626. Ana de San Bartolomé fue beatificada por Benedicto XV en 1917.

“Thy kingdom come!”. Let us sow this word in the midst of

our sins and our shortcomings. Let us give it to the people

defeated and bent by life, to those who have tasted hatred

more than love, those who have lived aimless days without

ever understanding why. Let us give it to those who have

fought for justice, to all the martyrs in history, to those who

have come to the conclusion that they have fought for

nothing and that in this world evil always

dominates…. “Yes, I am coming soon”: this is the Lord’s

reply: “I am coming soon”. Amen. And the Lord’s Church responds: “Come,

Lord, Jesus”…. “Come Lord Jesus”. And Jesus says: “I am coming soon”. And

Jesus comes, in his way, but every day. We have trust in this. And when we

pray the “Our Father”, we always say: “Thy kingdom come”, in order to feel him

say in our heart: “yes, yes, I am coming and I am coming soon”.

«¡Venga a nosotros tu Reino!». Sembremos esta palabra en medio de

nuestros pecados y fracasos. Regalémosla a las personas que están

derrotadas y dobladas por la vida, a los que han saboreado más odio que

amor, a los que han vivido días inútiles sin haber entendido nunca por qué.

Regalémosla a los que han luchado por la justicia, a todos los mártires de la

historia, a los que han llegado a la conclusión de que han luchado por nada y

de que el mal domina este mundo…“¡Sí, vengo pronto!”: esta es la respuesta

del Señor. “Vengo pronto”. Amén. Y la Iglesia del Señor responde: “Ven, Señor

Jesús”… “Venga a nosotros tu Reino” es como decir “Ven, Señor Jesús”. Y

Jesús dice: “Vengo pronto”. Y Jesús viene, a su manera, pero todos los días.

Tengamos confianza en esto. Y cuando recemos el «Padre Nuestro» digamos

siempre: «venga a nosotros tu Reino», para sentir en el corazón: “Sí, sí, vengo,

PARENT ORIENTATION NIGHT:

Friday August 16 at 7:00 PM in the school hall.

SCHOOL Begins August 19, 2019 at 7:45 am. It is a regular full day with after care available.

The school yearly calendar, supply lists per grade level, and other important parent information will be sent to each family

via US Mail at the end of June.
