Entry requirements: 5 GCSEs grades 9 - 4 (A*- C), must include GCSE Art at grade C or above and portfolio evidence

Please note that you will need to obtain an average of 10 GCSEs and a minimum APS of 5.0 to study A Levels.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

A Level Graphic Design is a practical subject where you will have the opportunity to develop your unique ideas into actual pieces of visual communication. The course is very hands-on and you are expected to engage with a wide variety of technical and creative disciplines ranging from hand-drawn sketches to computer generated designs.

Throughout both years of the course you will be immersed in a wide variety of approaches to visual communication. These include posters, adverts, logos, album covers, t-shirts and interior design. The significance of typography will also be explored with an emphasis on how the careful combination of words and images can completely alter the reading of a text.

Outside of class, you will carry out detailed research into branding and design by attending festivals such as the D&AD Awards, which celebrates creative design and advertising across the world. A Level Graphic Design lessons take place in a designated Art & Design studio space. The space includes access to both the traditional and digital tools necessary to fully experiment and create innovative visual work. Sketchbooks are used to collate research and to chart the development of your idea from a concept to an actual working piece of visual communication. Personal exploration is encouraged throughout the course.

DISTINCTIVE MODULES

Throughout your two years of study you will develop skills in illustration, typography, editorial, advertising, branding, package design, design for print, computer graphics, multimedia design, animation and special effects, web and app design and game design.

Some modules are linked to live-client briefs. This means you will work with an employer and turn your coursework into a genuine piece of visual communication. For example, students designed posters promoting Waltham Forest’s ‘Back the Bid’ campaign to become the first ‘London Borough of Culture.’ The completed pieces of work were reviewed by representatives from the council and displayed locally around the borough (Waltham Forest subsequently won the bid too!).

MEDIACOURSE INFORMATION

Qualification: Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology

Level: 3 (equivalent to three A Levels)

Entry requirements: 4 GCSEs grades 9 - 4 (A* - C) including English or maths grade 4 (C) or above

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology has been designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to access and progress to degree-level study and employment within the media sector. There is no exam so you are assessed entirely on practical coursework. This provides you with a substantial portfolio and show reel evidence (a requirement for most creative jobs, university courses and apprenticeships). Compared to exam based courses it more accurately reflects the demands and challenges of working in the creative industries. If you have an interest in media or you want to explore, develop and test your creativity then this is the ideal course for you.

The course has been intentionally designed to develop creative and technical skills across the disciplines of both moving image (e.g. video / audio production) and digital design (e.g. graphic design). Due to developments in technology employers are increasingly looking to appoint ‘Mixed Media Specialists’ and learners who study this course will therefore become adept across a range of hardware and software (e.g. Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere, After Effects etc.).

DISTINCTIVE MODULES

Assignments are deliberately diverse to reflect the varied nature of the creative industries but some of the projects learners produce throughput the course include:

• Animation

• Music video

• Advertising and marketing material (both print and moving image texts)

• Short film, TV drama extract, documentary

• Campaign video and product design

Every project is linked to a live client brief to ensure that student work meets the needs of employers. For example, short films are submitted into an International Film Festival and digital design work is produced for a specific client. Quite often rewards and prizes are given to projects that are ‘commissioned.’

Please note that you will need to obtain an average of 10 GCSEs and a minimum APS of 5.0 to study A Levels.

Monoux Sixth Form College Prospectus 2019/2036

COURSE DESCRIPTION

It is impossible to understand the world we live in today without an awareness of the role that the media plays in all aspects of our society. Roger Silverston (London School of Economics and Political Science) said it best: “Media is at the core of experience, at the heart of our capacity or incapacity to make sense of the world in which we live.”

In A Level Media Studies you will take ownership of the content by engaging in lively debate and thought provoking discussion, often covering a range of topics such as politics, economics, culture and social relations. A sophisticated understanding of media theory is developed throughout the course, which feeds directly into the production of creative media coursework. In addition, you will develop skills of enquiry, critical thinking, debate, decision-making and analysis. You will also apply theoretical knowledge, make informed arguments and reach substantiated conclusions.

DISTINCTIVE MODULES

Component 1 - Media Products, Industries and Audiences

• Section A - Media language and representation is examined across a number of different case studies ranging from advertising to music videos. Students consider how certain texts can be used to shape perceptions (e.g. the extent to which regressive stereotypes of gender and ethnicity are promoted and / or challenged by the media).

• Section B - Media Industries and audiences are explored in detail across marketing, film, radio and video games. Learners are encouraged to consider and question the overwhelming power and wealth that the media holds.

Component 3 - Cross Media Production

• Although the course is predominantly theoretical there is also a practical coursework component that will allow you to develop sophisticated video and audio skills through the creation of a short video sequence. You will also have the opportunity to develop strong design skills by planning and then making promotional material.

• The coursework often contributes to learner’s showreels or portfolio evidence for university interviews. A-Level Media Studies coursework created by our students has gone on to win awards at International Film Festivals.

PATHWAY PROGRESSIONACADEMIC PROGRESSION

History is a fascinating subject and A Level History is recognised as a strong academic A Level by Russell Group universities, facilitating entry to all universities for a range of courses. It can lead to degree courses in all humanity and social science subjects as well as science (if complemented with A Level Science and Maths).

EMPLOYMENT PROGRESSION

History is especially helpful in preparing students for careers in law, journalism, the civil service, teaching, management and business as it involves skills in organisation, evaluation, analysis, problem-solving and research.

I enjoy my courses very much as I feel they are tailored to suit my personality and interests. Each lesson is interesting and challenging but overcoming the challenge is very rewarding.

It is my intention to go to university and study history. After that I want to go into the world of politics so that I can improve people’s lives and standards of living. Monoux gives you the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life and all of which have a different and interesting story to tell. The quality of teaching and support is brilliant.

EMPLOYMENT PROGRESSION

I chose Monoux College because the modules from my subject interested me. Also with how far away I live, the 10am start makes sure I have time to come in earlier to do work.

I enjoy learning about politics. It has helped me understand what’s politically happening in the UK. I like the flip-leaning strategy as it allows me to develop my own learning skills.

I plan to go to university to study history. Afterwards I will be working to get into the book publishing industry, where my current A Levels will help me gain wide knowledge for novels I’m interested.

The teachers are incredibly helpful and understanding.

PATHWAY PROGRESSIONACADEMIC PROGRESSION

To progress onto Year 2 of the course students will be expected to reach a D grade in the first year exams.

Religious Studies can be studied on its own but is often used as a compliment to other courses such as philosophy and anthropology.

EMPLOYMENT PROGRESSION

Religious Studies is an adaptable course that develops analytical skills and historical knowledge that can be used in a huge range of careers in government and business organizations, as well as creative industries.

I picked Religious Studies because I love to debate about intricate and profound topics such as Euthanasia, God’s existence and Abortion. Religious Studies and philosophy has thought It enhanced my independent thinking skills as well as critical thinking because philosophy requires you to suspend your belief and disbelief while thinking. It asks you to avoid being too quick to jump to conclusions, especially the conclusions that you might think are intrinsically true. Personally it made me more open-minded. It also matured my relationships with different types of individuals by encouraging new ways of thinking other than my own.
