Student Council

This year the Student Council started a new practice of hanging pictures of championship teams.

The other projects carried on consisted of a Courtesy Week, Safety Week, "Hat Off" board about school activities and many others. They also assisted with the Scholarship Awards as-

sembly and did work on the form of the Con­stitution.

Debate

From Wichita to Topeka, from Manhattan to Pittsburg-experienced and novice debaters traveled far and wide to argue both sides of this year's debate topic: "Resolved that nuclear wea­pons should be controlled by international or­ganization."

Evidences of the squads' skills showed up in their high rankings in many of the contests and in the addition of 10 trophies to those of CHS.

Kavalkade

This year's performance was a presentation of "Potpourri," meaning "variety." The acts ranged from Mounties to Models including Hello Dolly dancers, Indian skit, Latin Ameri­can singing and, in conclusion, scenes chosen by the Director Kenneth Burchinal.

Senior Danny Metzer was crowned King Kay XVI during the intermission of the final per­formance.

The performances which were given the week of Feb. 16-19, climaxed the work of some 25 0 students and faculty members.

Twister Staff

Members of the yearbook staff were given the opportunity of handling more of the actual production aspects of the 1965 Twister. Pic­tures and copy were combined into page layouts designed and made ready for the plant camera by staff members.

Working in accordance with student demands and administrative direction, the staff resorted to the more traditional yearbook style in the 1965 Twister.

Drum Corps

The Drum Corp girls had a busy season in the 1964-1965 school year. They participated in such activities as Billy Mills' homecoming, Neewollah at Independence, keeping time at the debators' invitational tournament, Christmas parades, and their usual performance at the Coffeyville-Independence football game.

The theme for this years' Drum Corp reunion was ''Memory Cruise." It was announced at this reunion that Peggy Stephens would fill the office of drum major ior '65-'66.

organization, three musical groups par­ticipated in the activities of the school year.

The band concert in late spring of this year was the high point in the band's year.

Other activities in which the 55-member band participated were pep as­semblies, football, basketball games and K. U. Band Day.

Orchestra Theater goers to the many dramatic produc­

tions of Field Kindley High settled comfortably back in their seats and enjoyed the concerts pro­vided by the theater orchestra prior to opening curtain. During Kindley Kavalkade, the orches-

tra provided the music for the vocal and dance numbers.

Participation in the orchestra Festival held in Fort Scott in April was the highlight of the year for these instrumentalists.

Robed Choir Programs presented by the fifty-eight voices

of the Robed Choir were enjoyed by the people of Coffeyville and the Southeast Kansas Area. The choir, directed by Lane Broadstreet, spon­sored the Christmas and Easter assemblies and

carried a share of the annual Kavalkade. Outside the school they appeared at the Kansas Educa­tional Convention and participated in the re­gional contest held at Pittsburg.

The Madrigals, who were selected from the choir. entertained on numerous occasions.

Candy Strip~~rs

Forty -five Candy Stripers comprised this years group who served at the Coffeyville Me­morial Hospital as nurses' assistants. They per­formed tasks such as filling water pitchers, making beds, carrying trays, and entertaining patients. The organization, sponsored by the Kayettes, gives girls who are interested in nurs­ing a first-hand experience with the work re­quired of nurses.

Many act1v1tles kept the Kayettes busy this past year. Some of these were the annual Faculty Tea, Pizza Party for the new members, Heart Sister Week, Mothers' Tea, Formal Dance, and the Senior Farewell. A new custom adopted this year was the sending of valentine cards to the teachers.

Ten Kayette members attended the Kayette conference at Independence.

lntramurals

Boys' intramurals, under the leadership of Paul Crandell, and girls' intramurals, under Mrs. Delores Zeigler, offered such activities as tennis, basketball, tumbling, bowling, volley­ball, softball, and other activities to skilled and fun-loving Coffeyville students who showed interest. Students met after school on week-days to compete with their physically fit friends.

The intramural program provided fun and entertainment as well as outlet for the tensions of Coffeyville High School students.

Intramural volleyball occupied the time and energies of CHS boys after school.

GAA

The Girls' Athletic Association provided the opportunity for intramural participa­tion for CHS girls. This group, consisting of approximately 50 members, was under the leadership of Kathy Griffin, President, and Mrs. Ziegler, Sponsor.

One activity of the group was the giving of Christmas gifts for community service.

It was not "all work and no play" for they enjoyed social functions including a pizza party, Play Day at Pittsburg, and a picnic at the close of the year.

Tillies In addition to regular cheering duties, the

girls made banners and posters for a~l games. They sold season tickets for all athlettc events. They also sold pencils and C'ville buttons.

These enthusiastic young women were spon­sored by Miss Helen Glaser.

Pompoms, spmts jumping, and voices raised in triumph or suddenly quieted in despair -these were the ups and downs of 'Nado's ''mass enthusiasm controllers." With a special respon­sibility to encourage good sportsmanship, al­ways in uniform, Tillie members looked smart in purple skirts, white blouses, and purple wes­kits with large emblems.

Tornado Basketba II

For the second consecutive year the Golden Tornado under Coach Harold Thomas won the SEK League Championship as they compiled a won-loss record of 13-1. The Tornado then moved to the Regional tournament at Winfield where they defeated Wichita Southeast 57-55 in overtime for the title.

At the State tournament in Lawrence, the Tornado drew Wichita East as their opponent. The Tornado came out on the short end of the contest by being defeated 55-40.

The only loss in league competition for the Tornado was a heart-breaker to Pittsburg, 72-7 I. but they later avenged this defeat by shel­lacking them 64-56.

Gale basketball, under the coaching of Howard McMurray, pushed its way to the SEK championship for the second consecutive year.

Many long hours of hard practice helped to make the Gale SEK champs and gave the under­classmen valuable experience toward being fu­ture members of the Tornado team.

Tornado Tankers With a record of seven victories and five de­

feats, the Tornado Tankers finished the 64-65 season. They garnered a second-place finish in the State, trailing only Wichita East.

The squad was lead by the seniors in the sprints and in diving. With several top return­ing sophomores and juniors, the Tankers are looking forward to next season.

In 1965, the Tornado track team placed second in the South­east Kansas League: the frrst championship ever dropped by Coach Me Whirt.

From the regional meet five 'Nado runners (sprinter Carey Borum, and the mile-relay team composed of Borum, Melvin Brown, David Neale, and Rick Unsell) advanced to the state meet in Wichita. In the state Borum placed fourth in the 1 00-yard dash. The 880-relay team which set a school record of 1:31.4 at the regionals was forced to scratch along with the mile relay. Both had high hopes of placing.

This year's team held promise of a high finish in the league. Besides Borum, Unsell, Neale and Brown, returning lettermen included sprinters Ronnie Pursley, Jack Henderson, Mike Bue­tow, Larry Seigel, and high jumper Jim Clark. Added to this list was a large number of returning non-lettermen and new­comers.

Taken as a whole, a strong nucleus for a promising 1966 squad was forseen.

The Tornado two-man golf team composed of Jerry Wall and Steve Knapp finished fourth in the state tournament. The same combination finished first in the SEK league meet held at Hillcrest Country Club and first at the regional meet in Independence.

The four-man team finished fourth in the SEK and twelfth in the regional. The four-man team was composed of Steve Bardwell, Tom Tongier, Bob Coyle and Lonnie Wiseman.

Reception The reception was opened by a serenade by

the Harvey Minstrels. Kelly Wilson presided as Steward of the Palace. Bill Read, Heir Appar­ent, gave Curtsies and Bows to the Seniors. King Seniorprez, Danny Metzer, gave the Senior Farewell. Entertainment was provided by Eliza­beth's Dancers and vocal selections from "Came­lot" by David Evitts. A promenade, led by the Senior and Junior class officers, followed the reception.

Punch and cookies were served following the reception to approximately four hundred who attended the reception and dance.

Prom On Apnl 24 the seniors of CHS entered the

enchanted world of "La Soiree Royale" or French for "The Royal Party." The theme was carried out with glittering silver chandeliers which accented pink and red chiffon swags caught up with gold leaves. The double-tiered, red-carpeted stairway adorned with red festoons and a grandfather clock set off the theme.

The steering committee consisted of Bill Read, head chairman; Kathy Holmes, invita­tions; and Carolyn Cook, decorations; along with help from many others. All were under the direction of Miss Avis Johnson, Junior Class sponsor. ln anticipation of the "greatest prom---ever."

Dr. Kenneth McFarland was the feature speaker of the eve­ning when the two hundred seventy-two seniors of Field Kindley Memorial High School received their diplomas on May 28, at 7:30P.M. on Ise Athle­tic Field.

Coffeyville Superintendent of Schools, Dr. V. A. Klotz in­troduced Field Kindley Prin­cipal Clark Hendrix. who recog­nized the fifteen honor students and presented the class for their diplomas. Music was provided by Mrs. Irwin Fabler.
