The poor old Department of Conservation is getting stick from both sides over the issue of whether or not kite-boarders should be allowed to use the Ruakaka estuary. The Department has decided to conduct a public consultation exercise this summer with a view to establishing a “sustainable management” plan for the estuary. The proposal includes: • Extending the boundaries of the Ruakaka Wildlife Reserve to cover the whole estuary mouth including the river mouth and the northern edge, which is not currently in the reserve. • Developing a walkway from the camping ground to the ocean, which will steer pedestrians away from the bird - nesting area . • Fencing off nesting sites. • Issuing a proclamation to restrict “high impact recreational uses” within the wildlife refuge. Local conservationists have been doing some hard lobbying to try to get kite- boarders excluded from the estuary and are unhappy at the prospect of what they fear will be another summer of disturbance of birds from their roosting, feeding and nesting sites. Spencer Cummings, chairman of the Bream Bay Coastal Care Trust, said the Department of Conservation has the legal right under The Wildlife Act to ban kite- boarding from the estuary right now. “It’s clear that kite-boarders disturb the birds. Why doesn’t the Department act on this?” On the other side of the argument, David Kay of Ruakaka Kite Surf feels that kite- boarders are being picked on. He said that last summer local kite-boarders reached a voluntary agreement with the Department of Conservation to stay out of the estuary during king tides when flocks of godwits from all around Whangarei Harbour fly into the Ruakaka estuary to roost DoC gets stick from both sides of kite boarding argument Continued on page 6.

On Saturday November 6 I went to the Marsden Bay Gardening Club’s flower show held in the Ruakaka Hall. What a delight it was! Beautiful flowers, and floral arrangements, many cute ideas, well stocked stalls, vegetable and flower plants for sale, craft work etc: all arranged to look delightful. This show deserves much more publicity.

LETTERS

Send them to The Bream Bay News, RD2, Waipu 0528, email them to: [email protected] or you can leave them at Bream Bay Office Services in the Ruakaka Shopping Centre or at The Thistle in Waipu.

Letters to the editor are very welcome.

I have just got back from the Tides Out fun run and I have that wonderful self satisfied glow having accomplished what I set out to do which was to jog slowly around the 10 kilometre course. My whole family took part, each of us with different objectives but each now feeling, “Yes I did it.” Last weekend I jogged at the same slow pace around 7km at the Waipu Walkathon and yesterday I went out to take photographs of another great local event, the inaugural Snake Bank Challenge based at the One Tree Point yacht club. This was a paddle race out to Snake Bank and back and a 1500 metre swimming race in the opposite direction. There were only about 30 competitors all up, but the sun was shining, the sea was sparkling and everyone was having fun. I thought to myself ‘next year give that old kayak of yours an airing.’ I think this event has enormous potential. I hope Dan Sloane, who organised this as a fundraiser for the Bream Bay Action Group, is feeling encouragement enough to do it all again next year. I am an enthusiast of these community - based, mass sporting events. I am grateful to the people who put in the effort to organise them and to those who volunteer as marshals, first aid support, drink stop attendants etc. As well as raising money for good causes, you can congratulate yourselves on doing something which brings us all together as a community, helps to look after people’s mental and physical health and showcases our beautiful natural environment to visitors from Auckland, Whangarei, other parts of Northland or further afield. You may notice some changes in this issue of the Bream Bay News. We have changed printers and are now using the Horton Media press in Auckland. I am hoping we will get an improved print result as this company offers more pre - press technical support. The main reason we changed, though, is the newspaper company APN, which owns the Tauranga press we had been using was insisting we sign a contract. When I asked why after a seven – year - long relationship we needed this, the answer was “It’s company policy.”You know me, I’m stubborn and I don’t like being pushed around by big Australian owned companies. I am a bit sorry though to be saying goodbye to the guys who did the actual printing. They were real tradesmen and I have a lot of respect for them. Horton Media is a New Zealand owned company, which prints a number of independently owned newspapers, so I think The Bream Bay News might sit more comfortably with this lot. Marilyn

Two late model tractors parked at the Northgate Industrial Park were deliberately set alight in the early hours of Wednesday 10 November. Police were called to the scene at about 7am to find the two tractors had been completely destroyed by fire. One of the tractors was a four year old John Deere which belonged to the Whangarei firm Clement Contractors which had the job of mowing the grass on the two big industrial parks. The smaller was a Hirepool tractor, which was being used to mow around the survey pegs. Ian McInnes, who was using his own tractor to assist with this work said, “It was not a very good start to the day; turning up to work to find the smouldering remains of the two tractors. They were two good tractors.” His own tractor was an older model and was left untouched but he has now pulled out of the job for fear his tractor will be set alight. Wayne Hughes, the operations manager for Clements, said replacing the John Deere would cost around $120,000. In the meantime the company was unable to complete work. While the tractor was covered by insurance, the insurance company would now be requiring stricter security measures such as removing the tractors to a secure sight each evening.Mr. Hughs said a Ruakaka company had since offeredClements space in a secure yard. Sergeant Ken Andrews Officer in Charge at the Bream Bay Police said some good evidence collected from the scene indicates there were two offenders, probably teenagers or young men. “They drank a few DB Export Gold stubbies of beer while there, and may have let off a few fireworks.” Other evidence indicates that there may have been two vehicles involved, one of which did some burnouts on a round-about near the scene, and another that was used to transport away a significant amount (200-300ltrs) of diesel that was stolen from the tractors and a nearby digger. This second vehicle was likely to have been

a van or ute, given the narrow tread pattern it left at the scene. The previous evening, a white coloured wellside ute was seen doing burnouts on grass sections in the Marsden Cove development and police consider the two incidents could possibly be connected Sergeant Andrews said this arson incident is different from the recent arsons in the Ruakaka Village as the village fires appear to have been lit by a person on foot. He says, “Someone will know who these arson offenders at Northgate are, particularly given the amount of diesel that was stolen. Please ring local Police to help, discretion is assured.”

Tractors destroyed in yet another arson attack

The larger tractor belonged to Clements Contractors and the smaller was from Hirepool

There are two fairy tern nests on the Waipu sandspit, including one right on the end of the spit which needed a special fence placed around it to stop people stepping on the eggs which are camouflaged to blend with sand and shells. Sandbags were piled in front to try to stop it being swamped by the sea. Tour parties of international bird - watchers visiting Johnsons Point Rd. with their big telescopes and camera lenses are being treated to the sight of one of the world’s rarest birds flying backwards and forwards from the estuary to provide fish for its partner sitting on the eggs. Each nest has two eggs and volunteers and Department of Conservation ranger Matiu Mataira are putting in as much time as they can at the breeding site to guard the nests from predators and human disturbance. Last week Matiu decided to uplift the eggs from the southern most nest to an incubator at Auckland Zoo as the eggs had been moved, possibly by a rabbit as there were rabbit scrapings all around. Matiu moved the eggs back to the nest and after 10 minutes one of the nesting birds returned to incubate the eggs but, although he kept watch over a two hour period there was no sign of the other bird. A dummy egg has been placed in the nest. Since early September the Waipu trapping group has been maintaining 50 traps – 25 at each end of the spit to keep rats, stoats, hedgehogs and wild cats away from the area. The Department of Conservation laid pindone poison along the length of the spit last month to kill rabbits, as these were attracting wild cats to the area. The pindone has also helped to reduce the rat population. For the last two breeding seasons, wild cats have destroyed fairy tern nests at the Waipu sandspit. Waipu, Mangawhai and Pakiri are the last breeding sites for the New Zealand fairy tern which, with just 40 individual birds and eight breeding pairs remaining is New Zealand’s most rare bird. There are no reports of any fairy tern nests yet at the Mangawhai estuary this season.

“Tutus galore” is the theme for first half of the Bream Bay Ballet dance recital at this year’s Bream Bay Dance Extravaganza, held at Bream Bay College Saturday 27th November at 2pm.“Everyone needs the experience of wearing a tutu,” says ballet teacher Kristin Orr. “A girl has three magical ‘dress’ moments in her life, and wearing a tutu is one of them.” Teaching young girls how to move, dance, sit and hold your body and arms in a tutu are the first lessons,” she says. To get all her ballet dancers into a tutu, she decided on the theme of a magical story of Barbie dancing in Bream Bay to create the first spring’s rainbow. Senior dancers will perform choreography set to modern music - Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez, Twilight, Shakira and Christina Aguilera.By contrast, the second dance recital theme is an adaptation from the soundtrack from the 2009 movie and famous book ‘Where the Wild Things Are’. “Here the ballet students can dance in bare feet, talk and scream on stage, use wild imaginative jazz movements and dance soft lyrical moves,” says Mrs Orr. “Above all just have fun and be comfortable with working and performing on a stage in a different persona.”Joining ballet will be Highland Dance students of the Lothian Highland and National Dance School. who will twirl and step to the favourite pieces of the swords, the jig, the pas de valse and the fling. Also included in the dance genre line up are Tap Dancers from Dance Inc. Northland who will stamp and stomp to the choreography of Jackie Boyd.Pulse Dance Studio has a presentation of dancers from Ruakaka School and Mangapai School to jazz and style. The Bream Bay Dance Extravaganza is the community’s dance calendar event of the year, don’t miss out, says Mrs Orr. Tickets can be purchased from Bream Bay Office Services in the Ruakaka Town Centre or at the Bream Bay College auditorium door on Saturday 27th November. $8 adults, $4 children.

on the sand bar which remains above water. Mr. Kay said this arrangement worked well and there was a dramatic decline in the number of recorded disturbances of birds by kite-boarders. He is very concerned about the proposed proclamation.“They are going to take away the very best kite boarding location in the whole of Northland.”He said when weather conditions are right, the estuary, with its flat water, waves just beyond the river mouth and smooth winds, is in kite boarding terms, “world class.” “There are only around 25 days in the year when we can use the estuary and last summer with the voluntary ban, we only used it on 13 days.”

this data by the department’s Northern Conservancy scientist Tony Beauchamp concluded that kite-boarders did indeed disturb birds but that other activities such as people walking, swimmers and the Ruakaka Surf club’s 4 wheel bike, dogs, jet-skis and power boats also had effects. He said that during busy summer holiday periods these effects could be compounding with kite boarders displacing birds from the inner shorelines of the refuge and pedestrians then frightening them away from the seaward edge. Dr. Beauchamp said, “The data and the needs of waders (wading birds) suggests that kite boarding should not be permitted during all tides above 2.7m from September to mid December and during all tides from at least mid December until late March.” Sue Reed, the Department of Conservation’s Manager for the Whangarei Area Office, said, “We have two very passionate groups of people – one group whose members are passionate about the wildlife and another whose members are equally passionate about being able to use the estuary for the recreation of kite-boarding. “Ruakaka is one of the fastest developing areas in the district. We want to ask local people what they think about putting a plan in place to reduce and manage all the disturbances. We will be talking to the Whangarei District Council about what their long term plans for the area are and to the Ruakaka Ratepayers Association and other interested groups. We will be balancing all the things we need to take into account.” The Department of Conservation has a duty to uphold The Wildlife Act and to conserve natural heritage but also needs to allow that the land it holds is public land.

Just a week after Ruakaka School’s big gala day, the school held its show day.Animal numbers were slightly down on last year, but everyone had a good day with class-room displays and plenty of goodies left over from gala day on sale. The theme of the day was scarecrows – winner of the best costume was Tiahorangi Morgan-Edmonds (9).A special treat was a visit from Doug the Dig-ger – he was unable to make it to gala day as planned, so came along to the school’s show day to give children – and a couple of grand-parents – the chance to drive a digger.Calf Club Day Awards 2010 Results: CalvesLeading Senior: 1 Rachael Johns, 2 Saskia Johns, 3 Hazel McCormick, 4 Jordan Carswell

For the past two summers DOC has employed an independent monitor to observe and report on disturbances to the birds at the reserve. From March 10 – 15 2009 Gerard Prion observed how birds reacted to the presence of kite - boarders. He also spent time from 18 October 2009 to 1 March 2010 making observations about all the factors which displaced birds from their breeding, roosting and feeding areas. Farmers in the Ruakaka area are being warned to keep an eye on their stock after reports of thefts of calves. Police advise that gates alongside roadsides be secured with padlocks and one hinge on each gate be reversed so they cannot be easily removed. “We advise farmers to take the time to photograph their calves with a digital camera, and to keep good records to assist identification if they are stolen”,

Stock thefts in Ruakakasaid Sergeant Andrews of the Ruakaka Police. He also asks that any thefts of stock be reported to the Bream Bay Police and that rural residents keep an eye on their neighbours’ property and note the registration of any suspicious vehicles.“ We have a suspect and we need to be informed of these thefts,” he said.

They are: Rachyl Edge, Dan Sloane, Andrew Mill-er, Russell Mortimer, Drew Cumming, Vicki Cunningham, Mike Hardiman, Brent Lewis, Dawn Murphy and Mike Webb. Dan said the event was a great success and raised over $300.“People are asking when the next one will be. The answer is in a year’s time.”

This year’s Tides Out Fun Run held on Sunday 14 No-vember had 464 paid entrants, not quite as many as last year when there were 499 entrants but not bad, con-sidering the Glenbervie fun run was held on the same day. Susan McRae who has been involved in the organsia-tion of this event since its inception nine years ago said “We are extremely lucky having all those lovely volun-

teers, especially the ones who don’t have any children at school, like the Lions, The 60s Up, and neighbour-hood people doing the marshalling”. She has a special mention for Grant Kewene “who is always there rain hail and shine.”The event is a fundraiser for the Waipu Primary School.

Leatherwork artist Ami Newby of Waipu has been chosen as the overall winner of the 2010 Portage Trust Mug Show. This 19 year old competition, based at Lopdell House in Titirangi in west Auckland, invites visual artists of all varieties to come up with a take on the humble mug. Ami said there were all kinds of entries, mugs made of flax, some beautiful pottery and painted portraits of people’s faces.“You can interpret mug in any way you like.” Ami’s entry entitled, Koru Mug is made of sculptured leather, a medium she has been working in for a number of years. Fourteen years ago, shortly after moving to Waipu Amy won a merit award at the Mug Show with another leather entry entitled, “Skins of a kind, which included mugs made of three types of skin – the first an Australian fish – the Baramundi, the second – a deer skin and the third – cow hide. Since the early 1990 she has been winning awards at leather craft shows in Australia and America. Ami thinks her interest in leatherwork came from her father who, after being injured in the First World War, spent a lot of time doing craft work as he rehabilitated. Her father died when she was only nine years old but she thinks his influence rubbed off. “He was always doing something. He made everything. He did canework, pokerwork and beautiful sketching.”Recently, upon the death of some elderly relatives, leather purses made and given as presents by her father have been passed on to Ami. Ami’s mug, in pride of place amongst other finalists in this year’s Mug Show, is on display at Lopdell House until Sunday 29 November.

Steve Loane, the Coffee Man, is temporarily living in a house in Cove Rd. in Waipu’s industrial zone next to the timber mill and the steel-moulding workshop. He has only been there a few days and yesterday the landlord came in to see what the hose running into the house through the kitchen window was all about. It was the water supply to his coffee machine, the smaller one that he keeps on his kitchen bench top. Steve offered to make him a cup and won him over. “That’s the best coffee I have ever tasted” the landlord said. “The first thing I do whenever I move somewhere, I set up my coffee machine”, said Steve. Outside his back door is his Coffee Man van with the number plate Koffie. He had to settle for the Dutch spelling because the English one had already been taken but it has paid off with the Dutch tourists. He lifts up the van’s rear door to reveal a shiny “three group” or six – cups – at – a - time coffee-making machine. Steve, his van and his coffee machine are one of the prime attractions at the Saturday morning Whangarei growers market. His business there has really taken off. “When I started eight years ago I used to take four (2 litre) bottles of milk, now I take 22.” He sells between 200 – 300 coffees in a morning. He has given up holding a roadside stall on the highway. “I sell as much coffee in four hours at the market as I did in four days on the road.” Three years ago he employed 15 – year - old Nina Sanson to help him out. Nina has just turned 18 and Steve says she makes just as good a coffee as he does. The sales manager for Altura Coffee likes to introduce Steve as “the best barista in Northland. “That’s a huge complement”, said Steve. For two years running Steve won awards for the best Espresso at the Northland Barista Awards in Forum North. Other baristas won the best cappuccino and best flat white awards “but if you don’t start with a good espresso you can’t make a good coffee”, said Steve. Steve got into the mobile coffee business after spending nearly 10 years on a sickness benefit with an injured back. He did this damage building a house on Great Barrier

Island. The house was made of macrocarpa, which he milled from the property and carried on his shoulders, up a hill to the building site. It sounds like a pretty good house. “It was a great house. It had some really big timber in it. The studs were 150 by 150.”Does he still own it?When his relationship fell apart he handed the property over to his partner and their daughter. It recently sold for $2 million but this doesn’t worry him. “I’m still smiling. A great smile is worth more than millions of dollars.”Back on the mainland on his own again, Steve tried to take up his former employment building concrete tanks but found his back wouldn’t allow him to do this. “They even tried giving me the smaller tanks to work on but I just couldn’t do it.” He was living in a place called Glorit between Kaukapakapa and Wellsford when he decided he was fed up with doing nothing. He had a hobby – growing succulents and cacti, so he took a collection of these down to State Highway 16 and set up a roadside stall. “I decided I needed a little incentive to get people to stop, so I started doing mobile coffee.” When he began at the Whangarei market he still sold a few plants as a sideline but the coffee business has now taken over completely. He still has his collection of plants. “I enjoy having them around me. They remind me of my humble beginnings, where the idea was born.” Steve believes his was the first mobile coffee van in New Zealand. “I used to think ‘Why can’t people come up with their own ideas?”He has now decided to take the proliferation of coffee vans all around the country as a compliment. Every week he buys a new CD at Musicor in Whangarei. He displays his latest CD cover at the front of his van as so many people were asking him what his latest purchase was. This week it was a double album by Fat Boy Slim and David Byrne called Here Lies Love with a photo of the lovely Imelda Marcos on the cover. “Music is an integral part of my business,” he says.He tries out all his new CDs in his van as he is driving. If they pass muster they go into a 10 CD player he uses

for his coffee stall and, after this. they get stored in a cupboard. Steve has a regular 4pm to 6pm Monday evening slot at the Waipu radio station Radio Waves entitled: Mixed up Mondays with the Coffee Man, so this is an opportunity to pull out some old favourites. Shortly he will be moving to Helmsdale Rd. where so he can be on the spot to help Craig Bauke, who he has commissioned to build a trailerized unit to tow behind his van. He plans to install the unit with two big three-group machines to help him keep up with the demand at the market. He has other expansion plans, which he doesn’t want to reveal just yet. “I have spent the last few years paying for all my equipment and getting the van picture perfect. I find now I only have to work one or two days a week and I can spend the rest of the time doing what I really enjoy, making something new to use in the business.”

Wednesday 3 November. Leads and two`s Choice Winners: Dawn Owens, Val Sandford:. Runners Up: Dawn Carr, Jo Walker

There has been a lot happening at the Waipu Golf Club over the last few weeks. The Men’s 54 Hole Strokeplay Club Championships were recently completed and domi-nated by out junior players who took out 3 of the 4 divisions. Chase McKeown won the Senior Division, Liam Young won the Intermediate Division, Michael McCrae won the D Grade and the only non junior winner was Allen Richards who won the Junior Division! It’s great to see the junior golfers playing so well and the benefits of their coaching from Neville Cockayne bearing fruit. On Sunday November 21, Waipu Golf Club will be holding a Have a Go at Golf day. This is a free day for all interested junior golfers or would be golfers. We will supply clubs and have reduced membership prices for that day only. Pay on the day and it will cost only $50 for juniors to join Waipu Golf Club, so if you are under 18 and want to play come along between 11 am and 2 pm to Have a Go!The Leech Fencing Melbourne Cup Day was a huge success with over 60 players making the most of the great scoring conditions and socialising afterwards in the lead up to the Great Race. The 25th Bream Bay Classic was held over the weekend of November 6 and 7. It attracted a smaller field than usual but was still keenly contested by the golfers. The Gross winner was Fraser Wilkins from Royal Auckland (211) with Ben Wallace, also from Royal Auckland second (212), and James Davis third (218) from North Shore. The Net Winner was David Enwright (212) from Muriwai, second Tony Simpson (214) from Waipu, third Ryan Trainor (218) from Titirangi and fourth the evergreen John Pennington (218) from Waipu. Thanks to everyone involved in the running of the Bream Bay Classic, it was a great success.

Golf Report By Brendan Moore

Close to 70 people gathered in the Waipu Coronation Hall, along with volunteers from the Hall Committee and members of the Lions Club who acted as marshalls on the routes, for the Waipu Fun Walkathon held on Sunday 7 November. Many families took advantage of the good weather to walk together.

Waipu Walkathon a family affair

Karen Chapman (left) finished third overall in the seven kilometre option behind front runners Karl Andrews and Ben McClure, but she returned to the course to help her sister Sue Adlam get to the finish line.

The Marsden Cove Fishing Club held its second Annual Open Tournament over the weekend of 30 and 31 October. This year the competition base was the Marsden Cove Marina’s newly erected marquee. The early morning seas were very favourable for fishing and boats were seen leaving the Ma-rina around 5am. Unfortunately late morning easterlies rose and the sea became uncomfortable for fishing. However this did not stop the competitors, who just moved into the calmer har-bour where the fishing was good at favoured spots. The weekend concluded on

Sunday afternoon with the trophy presentations, sponsors spot prize draw and a BBQ, where no doubt many fish stories were told. The 2010 winners were: Seniors: Snapper: 1st Mervyn Prinsloo whose winning fish weighed in at 5.83kg. 2nd and 3rd prizes went to Owen Bunter. Kahawai: 1st Mervyn Prinsloo, 2nd and 3rd Vanessa Martinovic. Trevally: 1st Steve Mar-tinovich, 2nd Owen Bunter. Juniors: Snapper 1st and 2nd Olivia Bunter, 3rd Jamie Cookson. Kahawai: Ka-lhan Bunter. The club’s next event will be: Chicks @ The Chicks a ladies fishing weekend which will be held on April 9 and 10 2011. This will be open to non - club members.

Well it’s been at least six months since the last article for our local paper. We have had a fairly busy winter, coming into spring with 81 jobs in Oc-tober, nearly as busy as our busiest month - January. Our jobs are mainly chest pains, mostly cardiac related of course, but our numbers of actual cardiac arrests is down which is great. There have been quite a number of self poisonings around the place. These are mostly acci-dental, and often children, so please watch where you are leaving sprays, detergents and your ‘garden shed’ liquids!Thank you to you all for supporting us at our monthly Ruakaka Market – we will be there again on Nov 21st , doing our ‘Quick Fire Raffles’ and Sausage Sizzles. (You can always get your blood pressure and blood glucose levels checked when we are there too). The money’s made from the markets has enabled us to send a good number of our officers to the Whangarei 3 day Traumed seminar held every year around October. With the weather improving, (much to the disgust of our cow-cockeys), a lot of you will be dusting off the barbecues, so please don’t try and light them with the Meths & lighter this year.. it works too well and the resulting burns are one of the worst, most painful injuries you can endure – particularly debilitating if they’re facial burns. Some of you may have noticed we now have a nice shiny Mercedes am-bulance! We got it brand new in the middle of the year and have now just clocked 20,000kms! If any of you are interested in having a look at our ambulances, please don’t hesitate to come to the station and have a nosey around… We have 24 volunteers here now, all at different stages of skill levels. 4 are in the process of attaining the National Diploma in Ambu-lance Practice, 2 have achieved that this year, and 5 are ‘training up’ and in the wings to begin the next one in a month’s time. This diploma allows these officers to then apply for casual paid work, with the view of one day getting a fulltime job as an Ambulance Officer. With so many officers attaining a higher skill level, we are not standing the ambulance down as much as we were. As Niki and I are the only paid officers here at Bream Bay station, we rely heavily on the volunteers to crew the nights. It is our aim to keep our ambulance on the road 24/7, otherwise if you want an ambulance and we’re unavailable, there is a wait whilst one comes down from Whangarei. This is a very rare occasion now which is great. We will be selling Christmas trees again this year as a fundraiser. Trees will be avaialbe from 4 December at the tyre shop next to the Gas Alley service station at the Ruakaka roundabout. See advert pg.18 for sale dates.
