1999 SEASON PREVIEWTIGER SOCCER

1999: THE NEXT STEP?

Tie 1999 University of Memphis Tigersoccer season may answer some ofthe questions that have been linger-

ing in the minds of many. Can an experienced team with ten re-

turning starters use that experience to buildon the 1998 success and reach even higherlevels? Can this team remain hot after win-ning four of the last five contests in 1998while reaching the final of the ConferenceUSA Tournament? Can Steven Brooks con-tinue his 1998 scoring prowess?

But most importantly, can and will theTigers come together under their new coach,Richie Grant, and take the next step, a C-USA title?

"This is going to be a team that's verywell led," Grant said. And this leadershipcomes from one thing, a big returning class, which in turn means a lot of experience. "It'svery hard to beat experience and these ladsare returning with a lot of it," he continued.

Grant begins his U of M career with aside that was just one step away from a mi-raculous end to the 1998 year. He inherits aveteran club that returns five seniors includ-ing goalkeeper Brian Covey. The Colliervillenative and Houston High School standouthas seen everything a Tiger can see, start-ing 56 games over the past three seasons. He's made 275 saves and has a career 1.52goals against average, good for third andsecond respectively, in the U of M's careerrecord book.

Covey was named to C-USA's all-fresh-man team in 1996 and earned C-USA Playerof the Week honors in November of that

year. During that fabulous freshman cam-paign, Covey recorded nine shutouts, in-cluding five in a row, while posting a 1.08GAA.

If Covey can keep the ball out of thenet and senior forward Steven Brooks canput it in, the Tigers could be very success-ful in 1999. Brooks scored 14 goals last year, the second most in the conference. He hadfour game winning goals and took a team-high 50 shots leading the Tiger attack thatoutscored opponents 35-29. And was thethird team all-conference selection ever hotduring the Tigers' late-season run. Hescored five goals in the last five games in-cluding the Tigers' final three final tallies ofthe year. Brooks was tabbed as a pre-sea-son all-conference pick as well.

Aiding Brooks up front is junior TommyWhite. White has scored seven goals inhis U of M career and has seven assists aswell, five of which came in 1998.

The one piece to the Memphis attackthat does not return is Matt Briggs. Briggsstarted each of the Tigers' 20 games in 1998,scoring six goals. He was named to the all-conference third-team and earned GTE All-American honors for his sucess in the class-room as well as on the field.

Grant returns three other seniors to the1999 team: Brandon Crossett, Joey Lewisand Philip Thiele. All three have made im-pacts for the Tigers in their careers at theirrespective positions of forward, midfielderand defender and should continue to do sothis year.

And if Grant didn't have enough expe-rienced seniors on the field, he re-turns seven juniors as well. Inaddition to White, Richard Keeneis back after leading the team inassists with seven last year. Hestarted 18 games last year and hada pair of assists in the conferencetournament run.

Another junior that returns in1999 is Ryan Schwaigert. TheGermantown HS alumnus wasnamed the C-USA TournamentDefensive MVP last year.

With all of this experience and

a new coach who will be looking to see whatthe players can do, expect a lot of competi-tion for playing time and the starting jobs."I watched a lot of them play when I wasrecruiting at Lambuth and they're defmentlya bunch of quality players," Grant said ofhis knowledge of the Tigers' abilities.

The youth of the 1999 side will comefrom redshirt freshmen Darren Bevard andTodd Gingrich. Both players bring a win-ning attitude to their teams after champion-ship runs in high school.

"Being in the conference final last year, was a great experience for all players to gothrough," Grant said. "We can only hopethat if we are in that situation this year, wecan possibly go one step furthur and winthat game." And that simply is the next step.

The ScheduleThe Tigers begin the 1999 campaign by

hosting the Diadora Midwest Classic onSept. 4 and 5. Joining Memphis will beSouthwest Missouri State, Centenary andWestern Illinois. After a C-USA opener withUNC Charlotte, the Tigers travel to Oneonta,N.Y., to participate in the Hartick NikeShootout. The Tigers return home for a Sept.22 battle with cross-town rival ChristianBrothers before heading out on a four gameroad-swing. Two of the next three contestsare home conference games before a finaltwo-game road swing. The Tigers then wrapup the regular season with a three-gamehome stand.

TIGERS TRY OUT FOR NATIONAL TEAM, ONE IS SUCCESSFUL

A pair of Univeristy of Memphis soccer players recently tried outfor the Under-23 national team, and one was successful. Senior goal-keeper Brian Covey and junior defender Ryan Schwaigert made a trip toPortland, Ore. in August for the US Amateur Soccer Association's Fes-tival.

Both players were members of the South Regional Team that posteda 2-2 record at the Tournament, both wins being shutouts. One of thoseshutouts was recorded by Covey who was noticed by the national teamcoaching staff and was selected to be a member of the U-23 NationalTeam.

Although Schwaigert was not selected, the experience he gainedwas invaluable and will help the Tiger defense tremendously in the 1999season and beyond.

Covey will be looking to use the experience and success he gained tolead the Tigers through 1999 and hopefully have the opportunity toplay professionally and/or for future World Cup and Olympic teams.

1999 SEASON PREVIEWLADY TIGER SOCCER

LADY TIGERS BEGIN NEW ERAWITH NEW MOTTO

With the departure of five graduat-ing seniors, the 1999 season be-gins a new era for the University

of Memphis Lady Tigers. And with this newera comes a new team motto; "Success isearned, not granted."

Because three of these five departureshave been with Lady Tigers' head coachLes Szabo since the beginning of the LadyTiger program in 1995, he will be relying onsome younger faces, including several new-comers to end the millennium on a high note.

Two seniors that do return for the 1999Lady Tiger campaign are Frances Currinand Meredith Smith.

Currin, a Pensacola, Fla. native, will re-turn to her goalkeeping position afterredshirting in 1998 due to a severe knee in-jury. Currin is the U of M's all-time savesleader with 230 and will try to regain the formshe had in 1997 when she posted a 1.83 goalsagainst average with four shutouts. Currinwill be challenged for the starting positionby sophomore Jennifer Simon who playedin eight games for the Lady Tigers in 1998.She posted a 2.25 GAA and had 1.7 shut-outs.

Smith, a senior and Memphis native, willbe looking to regain the form she showed inher freshman season of 1996 when she re-corded 11 goals en-route to Conference USAall-freshman honors. Smith's production had

dropped off in 1997 and 1998 but will be calledupon in '99 to take over the leadership of theMemphis goalkeepers. Smith's 14 careergoals places her fourth on the all-time list, behind the three Lady Tigers who finishedtheir stellar four-year careers in 1998. (JodiFisher, Christy Caswell and Jennifer Vossen)

Aiding Smith up front will be forward/midfielders Candice Spiniolas and SuzanneWilliams.

Williams, a sophomore in 1999, hasplayed in 17 games, tallying three goals.Spiniolas, a junior scored three goals in 1998,the second most among returners. But whatthe Gary, 111., native and Valparaiso transfercan do is score goals when they count themost. In fact, Spiniolas led the 1998 editionof the Lady Tigers with two game-winninggoals. She scored the lone goal in a 1-0 roadwin at Saint Louis and made the most of herfirst of 14 career U of M starts scoring a pairof goals in the 9-0 destruction of UT-Mar-tin.

The U of M midfield will be led by jun-iors Nicole Bates-Earner and MicheleMeehan along with sophomore MichelleMeduri.

Bates-Earner has started 36 games in hertwo previous seasons, all starts and hasscored two goals and assisted on three oth-ers, primarily from a defensive type posi-tion. Meehan scored her first career goal ina 1998 6-0 shutout of Louisville and has 39games of collegiate experience to help leadtheUofM.

The defenders are young in 1999 but

do include juniors Tori Winslett and JackieHorton, a transfer from the University ofKansas. Winslett and Horton do have plentyof collegiate experience as Winslett has ap-peared in 32 games for the Lady Tigers, scor-ing six goals and posting five assists. Hortonmade 31 appearances while scoring one goaleach season for the Jayhawks.

Szabo also returns sophomores Jenni-fer Thiele and Stephanie Vossen to the de-fense. Thiele appeared in each of the LadyTigers' 18 contests last season, starting halfof them. She recorded her lone point of theyear, an assist, in the win over UT-Martin.

Szabo also hopes that the newcomersled by Becca Amrozowicz (Strongville,Ohio) and Erin Rothrock (Kingsport, Tenn.)can make an immediate impact and help theLady Tigers earn the success, that theyouthful team hasn't been granted, at leastnot yet...

The ScheduleThe Lady Tigers schedule will test the

youthful team. They have achance to start off hot hostingthe first seven games of the year, including a Sept. 1 openeragainst intra-city rival RhodesCollege. Included in that stretchis the Lady Tiger Soccer Invita- * ^tional and two Conference USAgames along with a Sept. 22 meeting withSEC rival Missisippi State.

* *

CONFERENCE

The U of M then ends September with tripsto Marquette and DePaul beforehosting four of the first sevenOctober games, all C-USAmatchups. The end of the sea-son will be tough as the LadyTigers finish up with three C-

¥ * USA road games as they makethe stretch run to qualify for the

eight-team conference tournament.

1998 REVIEW LADY TIGER SOCCER

1998 SEASON MARKS CAREERS' ENDFOR THREE LADY TIGER PIONEERS

To know the history of the Universityof Memphis soccer program, oneonly has peer into the eyes of four-

year letterwinner Christy Caswell. Up untilthis point in the history of Lady Tiger soc-cer Caswell has seen it all, literally.

Caswell was one of three players atMemphis when the team began intercolle-giate play back in 1995 who last Novembersaw their four-year careers come to an end.Joining Caswell as the only four-yearletterwinners in the history of the programwere Jodi Fisher and Jennifer Vossen. Butwhat makes Caswell unique is she is the onlyplayer to have started all 80 matches in thehistory of the U of M program. She finishedher career as Memphis' all-time assist leaderwith 32.

Fisher played in 79 matches over fourseasons and closed out her career as Mem-phis' all-time goal scorer with 33. She alsoholds the career mark for points scored with92. Vossen, who played in 75 career matches, tied Caswell's career goal tally as both play-ers scored 18 goals during Memphis' firstfour collegiate seasons.

Memphis opened the year with a 2-0shutout at home against Rhodes College, ex-tending a home field winning streak to sixmatches. Freshman Leila Moghim gave theLady Tigers a 1-0 lead in the first half off anassist from fellow freshman Suzanne Will-

iams. Jodi Fisher, who also as-sisted on Moghim's goal, wouldadd a second-half insurance goalfor the Lady Tigers. The shutoutwas goalkeeper HeatherChinellato's fifth of her career.

Memphis would run its homewinning streak to seven with a 4-1win over Chattanooga.

Also in the opening month ofthe season, Memphis would scorea team-record seven, first-half goalsin a 9-0 win over Tennessee-Mar-tin. Tori Winslett scored two goalsin the win and three during the weekwhile Candice Spiniolas andMoghim also scored twice in thewin over UT-Martin.

The Lady Tigers remained un-defeated at home in its last ninematches when it settled for a score-less tie against Conference USArival DePaul. U of M freshman goal-keeper Jen Simon earned the shut-out in her first collegiate start, stop-ping three shots in the match.

Marquette snapped Memphis'home, undefeated streak by limiting the LadyTigers to one shot in a 3-0 shutout whichdropped the U of M to 3-5-1 heading intoOctober.

In October the Lady Tigers played toback-to-back draws against SoutheasternConference opponents, tying Mississippi 2-2 before settling for a 1 -1 tie against Missis-sippi State.

Memphis snapped an eight-matchwinless streak with a 1 -0 shutout on the roadat Saint Louis. Spiniolas scored the game-winning goal in the match's 17th minute.

Fisher was named the Conference USAOffensive Player of the Week late in the sea-son after recording a hat trick against Louis-ville. Her first goal broke a scoreless tie just17 seconds into the second half.

During the season, Memphis freshmencombined for 24 points (nine goals, six as-sists).

Jodi Fisher closed out her career with an eight-goal, five-assist senior season.

She finished her career at the University of Memphis with a record 33 goals.

THE PRESIDENT ADMINISTRATION

Dr. V. LaneRawlins

PresidentBrigham Young,

1963

Since becoming president of The University

of Memphis in 1991, Dr. V. Lane Rawlins has

instituted positive changes in the areas of

academics, administration and student affairs

at the University. Further, he has gained the

support of leaders from business, campus,

and community in charting The U of M's path

for the future.

Under Dr. Rawlins' guidance, the University

has put greater emphasis on innovative un-

dergraduate education, on excellence in re-

search and graduate education, on interper-

sonal communication and understanding, and

on improving the internal workings of the

University.

Task forces he appointed have created

fresh approaches to diversity, public image,

planning and budgeting, research and schol-

arship, enrollment management, technology,

and undergraduate education.

One of the most important - and certainly

the most visible - of Dr. Rawlins1 accomplish-

ments has been the $26.5 million, Ned R.

McWherter Library, which houses more than

one million bound volumes and state-of-the-

THE UNIVERSITYADMINISTRATION

Eighty-seven years ago, The University of

Memphis began as a small state teacher's

college. Today, The U of M is a major center

for learning and research.

The University of Memphis'roots date back

to 1912, when radio v/as young, motion

pictures were silent and William Howard Taft

was in the White House. Named West Ten-

nessee State Normal School, the institution's

main purpose was to train and educate sec-

ondary-school teachers. It became West

Tennessee State Teachers College in 1925.

Answering the need for a comprehensive

school in the Mid-South, WTSTC expanded its

curriculum. In 1941, the school's name

changed to Memphis State College and in

1957, the college received university status

and became Memphis State University. On

July 1, 1994, the name was changed to The

University of Memphis. The U of M now has

some 20,000 students and a campus of

1,160 acres on four different sites.

The main campus lies in the center of a

sprawling metropolis and combines the con-

venience of a large city with the atmosphere

of a residential neighborhood. South Cam-

pus, which was once a veteran's hospital, is

home to the Billy J. Murphy Sports Complex

and student family housing. Students and

faculty members can conduct environmental

research at the Edward J. Meeman Biological

Field Station, which encompasses more than

600 acres of forest, wetlands and fields some

25 miles from the campus.

The University is guided by the principles of

academic integrity, sound management and

equal opportunity. With instruction, service

and research as interdependent goals, the

University commits its resources to the social,

cultural and economic welfare of the region

through partnerships with public and private

organizations. The University of Memphis is

accredited by the Commission on Colleges of

the Southern Association of Colleges and

Schools to award bachelor's, first profes-

sional, master's, educational specialist's and

doctoral degrees.

The University of Memphis offers bachelor's

degrees in 50 majors and 70 concentrations;

master's degrees in 50 majors and doctoral

degrees in 18 disciplines; one specialist de-

gree and one professional degree. The Uni-

versity is composed of six colleges, the Gradu-

ate School, the Cecil C. Humphreys School of

Law, the Loewenberg School of Nursing, and

the School of Audiology and Speech-Lan-

guage Pathology. The colleges are: the Col-

lege of Arts and Sciences, the College of

Communication and Fine Arts, the Fogelman

College of Business and Economics, the Col-

lege of Education, the Herff College of Engi-

neering and the University College.

Reflecting its commitment to high-quality

teaching and national prominence in re-

search, The University of Memphis has five

Centers of Excellence and 24 Chairs of Excel-

lence. The University has a full-time faculty of

over 700.

While the University's commitment to edu-

cation remains its primary focus, the campus

also offers a variety of organizations, clubs,

honor societies and special-interest and ser-

vice groups. There are many fraternities and

sororities on campus as well as a number of

other dubs. Theatrical and musical produc-

tions are performed on three stages at the

Communication and Fine Arts Building. The

University also has its own art museum.

THE ATHLETIC DIRECTORADMINISTRATION

R.C.JohnsonAthletic DirectorIowa, 1965

R.C. Johnson, who has worked for 28

years in athletic administration and served

as athletic director at Temple University, was

named the Director of Athletics at The Uni-

versity of Memphis on December 29, 1995.

"Clearly, R.C. Johnson is one of the pre-

mier athletic directors in the country," said U

of M President Dr. V Lane Rawlins. "We were

seeking an individual with people skills, as

well as a deep caring about student-athletes

and their futures.

"We searched long and hard for some-

one whom we felt had the talents to fit The

University of Memphis and the Memphis com-

munity, someone who was well respected in

NCAA circ es. We checked every resource that

was available and feel that we could not have

found a more qualified individual with a bet-

ter record."

Johnson initiated the start of a capital

campaign to add a new 8,000-square-foot

football and basketball office complex to the

current Athletic Office Building, a new bas-

ketball practice facility and a complete reno-

vation of the Murphy Athletic Complex on

Memphis' south campus.

The eight million dollar campaign is the

largest fund raising effort in the history of

Memphis athletics and should bring the Ti-

ger athletic facilities on-line with Conference

USA sister institutions.

During the spring of 1999, Johnson ne-

gotiated one of the richest radio broadcast

package in Tiger athletic history with WMC-

AM 79 in Memphis. The three-year agree-

ment calls for WMC to pay the University ap-

proximately $1.2 million for football and

men's basketball rights.

In his short tenure, Johnson has created

the Athletic Director's Honor Roll, the Tiger

Clubs Board of Directors and the athletic

director's Ambassador's Club.

Johnson has conducted several meetings

with the Memphis Park Commission to add a

greater presence for the Tigers in Liberty Bowl

Memorial Stadium. Numerous signs appear

in the Liberty Bowl indicating that the stadium

is the "home of the Tigers."

At Temple, Johnson was responsible for

directing a program with more than 500 stu-

dent-athletes in 20-men's and women's in-

tercollegiate sports, including nationally vis-

ible programs in men's basketball and foot-

ball. He was named Temple's director of ath-

letics on May 9,1994, after a national search.

The former Temple athletic director en-

joys a reputation for building private and cor-

porate support for intercollegiate athletics

and for developing strong academic services

for student-athletes. Highlights of his tenure

at Temple include: the origination of a Stu-

dent-Athlete Advisory Committee; the Athletic

Director's Honor Roll for student-athletes; the

reorganization of the Athletic Department in-

frastructure; chairing the Atlantic 10 Confer-

ence Membership Committee and represent-

ing the Big East Conference on the Gender-

Equity Task Force.

Johnson was hired at Temple after nearly

six years as director of athletics at Miami

(Ohio) University. During his tenure at Mi-

ami University, Johnson was respon-

sible for numerous programs that en-

hanced the stature and image of the

Ohio institution.

A strong believer in a quality edu-

cation for student-athletes, Johnson

emphasized academic integrity and

excellence during his time at Miami

University. At the time he departed for

Temple, Miami University had 15 stu-

dent-athletes with a perfect 4.0 GPA,

62 student-athletes with a 3.50 or bet-

ter GPA and 191 student-athletes with

a 3.00 GPA or better.

Before becoming athletic director

at Miami University, Johnson was ath-

letic director at Eastern Illinois from

1980-88. He was the associate ath-

letic director at Northern Iowa from

1974 to 1980.

A former football coach himself,

Johnson served as an assistant football

coach at Mankato State University from

1968-74. He coached at Youngstown

State University during the 1967 and '68

seasons. Prior to joining the staff at

Youngstown State, Johnson served as an

assistant coach at Northern Iowa for two

years (1965-67) and the University of

Iowa (1963-65).

A native of Ottawa, IL, Johnson has

his bachelor's degree in sociology from

the University of Iowa and a master's in

physical education from the University of

Northern Iowa.

He is a member of the Football Is-

sues Committee of the NCAA, the Na-

tional Association of College Directors of

Athletics, the Executive Committee of the

Division I-A Athletic Directors Association,

the C-USA Representative on the Board

of Directors of the AFCA, and he serves

on the Finance, Nominating, Planning,

Football Scheduling, and Expansion &

Bowl Committees for Conference USA. He

is also a member of the Shelby County

Sports Authority.

Johnson and his wife, Melba, have

three children and three grandchildren.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES ADMINISTRATION

The University of Memphis Ti-

ger athletic family has many

places to call home for intercolle-

giate athletics.

In 1970, the University of

Memphis Athletic Department of-

f ic ia l ly opened the Kennedy

Sportsplex, a 140-acre complex

located just south of the main

campus. The complex serves as

the home of the Tiger football,

baseball, soccer and track teams

and offers workout facilities for all

U of M sports.

Since that time, however, the

facility has taken on a new name

and is now called the Billy J. Mur-

phy Complex. The complex was

renamed in honor of former

Memphis head football coach and

athletic director Billy J. Murphy.

The main building at Murphy

Complex features a newly reno-

vated 50-yard indoor practice

field with an artificial surface. This

field is used for workouts when the

weather prohibits outdoor prac-

tices and is also used by the base-

ball team for winter workouts.

Also housed in the main building

is a modern, well-equipped train-

ing room, the football equipment

room, the football locker room,

sauna and steam rooms and film

and meeting rooms, as well as

locker rooms for the baseball and

track teams. Located behind the

main building are four outdoor

football fields, used for fall and

spring practices.

The new Billy J. Murphy

Weight Training facility opened in

January of 1993 and is now in

use by all University of Memphis

student-athletes. The 10,500

square-foot facility is one of the

largest of its kind in the country

and features the latest in strength

training equipment. The weight

room is equipped with 10 self-

contained olympic platforms and

power racks, a plyometric/medi-

cine ball area, a complete dumb-

bell line (up to 150 Ibs in two and

a half pound increments) and a

variety of hip sleds, glute-ham sta-

tions and other suppemental

pieces allowing athletes from all

teams to perform an unlimited

variety of exercises and move-

ments. The modern facility is also

equipped with dressing and

restrooms.

All of the University of Mem-

hosted the World Police and Fire

Games. The track meet featured

over 700 athletes from around the

world. During the summer of

1992, U of M served as host of

the Tennessee Sports Festival

which featured athletes from

around the state. Murphy Track

was also the host site of the 1992

and 1993 Great Midwest Confer-

ence Track and Field Champion-

ships.

Other features of Murphy

Complex include an Olympic in-

door pool and golf driving range

that is used by the Tiger golf

teams. A 5,000 square-foot

phis' home baseball games are

played at Nat Buring Stadium, a

1,200-seat facility adjacent to

Murphy's main building. Recently,

lights and a new enclosed press

box were added as well as new

blue chair back seats. Nat Buring

was the site of the 1993 Great

Midwest Conference baseball

tournament.

Located next to the baseball

stadium is Murphy Track, an eight-

lane, polyurethane tartan surface

track used by the University of

Memphis track teams for home

meets. During the summer of

1991, the University of Memphis

installed adjacent to the driving

range in August of 1992. The

green, which features four sand

bunkers and a self-contained ir-

rigation system, allows both men's

and women's golf teams to prac-

tice their short games.

Plans are in the initial stages

for further renovation of the golf

practice facilities at Murphy Ath-

letic Complex. Future projects in-

clude an elevated teeing area on

the south end of the driving range

to match the current tee box lo-

cated on the north end of the fa-

cility.

The 62,380-seat Liberty Bow:

Memorial Stadium is the site of all

the University of Memphis home

football games as well as the Liberty

Bowl postseason game. The stadium

has also hosted numerous concerts.

The Liberty Bowl, which was built at

a cost of S3.7 million by the city, was

inaugurated in 1965. The stadium

was renovated in 1987 at a cost of

$19.5 million which included sky-

suites, approximately 12,000 new

seats, a new stadium club, new light-

ing system, new playing surface, new

handicap seating area and numer-

ous concession stands and restroom

facilities for the new sections. In

1993, the Liberty Bowl received a

new artificial surface for the sidelines

and a fresh coat of paint for the in-

ner walls.

The University of Memphis Ti-

ger basketball team has played for

the past eight seasons in The Pyra-

mid, which seats 20,142. Highlight-

ing its contents is one of the finest

locker room facilities in all of bas-

ketball, including the NBA. This

2,200 square-foot room is equipped

with a lounge and team meeting

area, dressing room, training room

and storage area. In the dressing

room each player has his own per-

sonal vanity and locker, while the

lounge area is furnished with

couches, a 35-inch color television,

a stereo sound system and a co or

pull-down projection screen. It also

has an entrance way that includes a

stainless steel door and a lighted U

of M logo that hangs on a marble

wall.

The Tigers made good use of

their new home in their first season

as they went on to have the nation's

largest attendance increase (5,207)

and were ranked eighth overall in

per game attendance (16,142). The

Tigers ranked 12th in the nation in

attendance in 1992-93. Memphis'

eight-year record at The Pyramid is

102-27(791).

The Pyramid sits on the bank

of the Mississippi River and is visible

to motorists as they cross the Ten-

nessee-Arkansas bridge into Mem-

phis. It was also the site of the 1993

Great Midwest Conference Men's

and Women's basketball tourna-

ments. The Pyramid has played host

to the first and second round of the

NCAA Tournament twice (1995 and

1997).

Echles Field is the home of the

University of Memphis soccer team.

The 900-seat facility is located ad-

jacent to the Health Physical Educa-

tion and Recreation Building and re-

ceived a $20,000 facelift in the sum-

mer of 1992. The renovations in-

clude a new electronic Scoreboard,

However, the men's and

women's tennis teams host their op-

ponents on the HPER courts. There

are 21 laykold-surfaced courts which

allow the Tiger tennis teams to host

multi-team tournaments. The courts

were resurfaced in 1991.

Also available at the HPER

Building are two full gymnasiums

which are used by women's basket-

ball during the offseason and the

women's volleyball team. Also avai -

able for the women's athletic teams

are a 16-machine Nautilus weight

room with numerous Lifecycles and

TIGER TRADITIONS ADMINISTRATION

WHY TIGERS?When the University of Memphis first fielded

a football team in the fall of 1912, no one had se-lected a nickname for the squad.

Early references to the football team, tabbedthem only as the Blue and Gray Warriors of WestTennessee Normal School.

After the final game of the 1914 season, therewas a student parade. During this event, several Nor-mal students shouted, "We fight like Tigers." Thenickname was born.

More and more the nickname "Tigers" wasused, particularly in campus publications. But it didnot catch on with the newspapers downtown. Theycontinued to use "Normals" or the "Blue and Gray"when referring to the University.

Under coach Lester Barnard in 1922, Normal'sfootball team gave a ring of truth to that old studentyell about Tigers. The team adopted a motto - "Ev-ery Man A Tiger" and went on to score 174 pointswhile allowing their opponents just 29 points.

In the late 1920s, student publications anddowntown newspapers began referring to the foot-ball team as the "Teachers" or "Tutors". The Tigernickname would return. But not until 1939 was itfinally adopted as the official nickname for the Uni-versity of Memphis.

A BENGALFOR A MASCOT

For approximately 22 years, the sideline mas-cot for the University of Memphis athletics has beenthe Bengal Tiger. TOM II, the name of the currentmascot, puts in personal appearances at all Tiger foot-ball games, as well as numerous basketball games.TOM II has also been seen at Tiger baseball, soccerand women's basketball games.

The first tiger, purchased by the Highland Hun-dred (football booster group) in 1972, lived for 20years and was housed at the Memphis Zoo. TOMdied in February of 1992.

The story of how the first Tiger cub arrived inMemphis is quite interesting. On November 9,1972,the baby tiger was placed in a dog kennel in Michi-gan City, IN, and flown to Chicago's O'Hare Inter-national Airport. There it was placed aboard a Deltaflight and arrived in Memphis at 3:00 AM. C. Cleve-

The list ran fromSpook, Sampson, Goliath, Bengo, Sultan, Sahib, BigCat, Ptah, Touchdown, Sonny, and Shiloh to BengieWougie Bengal Boy from Tennessee.
