In a quest for a fourth-straight championship, the Lady Tigers will have 23 returning letter win-ners to couple with seven newcomers that have been considered one of the program’s best re-cruiting classes. While the squad has claimed three-straight Conference USA Championships, the Lady Tigers aren’t happy just with being the top program in C-USA.

FORWARdS Perhaps the strongest position for the Lady

Tigers, Ashley Berra leads the cast of returning forwards in 2010. The senior forward became the program’s first All-American after a 15 goal, eight-assist campaign in 2009. Berra climbed into the top-five among career record holders with the break-out season and is poised to claim the top spot with a productive campaign in 2010.

Senior Amanda Olszewski was a key re-serve for the 2009 C-USA Champions and is ex-pected to see playing time for the Lady Tigers. With a four goal, two assist season, Olszewski is a proven asset for the front line.

Hampered by an ankle injury during last season, junior Lizzy Somonin, the 2008 C-USA Freshman of the Year, will look to regain her bril-liant form from 2008 on the front line for the Lady

Tigers. Also returning from injury will be redshirt junior Melissa Smith who dazzled Evansville with 10 shots on Sept. 20.

C-USA All-Freshman team selections Averi Hallman and Taylor Isenhower will build upon strong freshman campaigns last season and pro-vide a spark of speed and finesse to the forwards. Hallman finished the season with two goals and seven assists while Isenhower posted six goals and three assists in 2009.

Freshmen Rasheeda Ansari and Emmaleigh Davis will look to have impact seasons as fresh-men. Ansari boasts tremendous speed and ath-letic ability that will give opponents fits while Da-vis is a versatile athlete who could see playing time at forward or defender.

MIdFIEldERSOne of the biggest reasons for the Lady Tigers’

unprecedented success the past three champi-onship seasons has been the play and depth of its midfield.

Senior Vendula Strnadova, a three-time first team All-C-USA selection, returns for her fi-nal season in the Blue and Gray. As one of the most talented players on the squad, Strnadova remains on track to break several Memphis of-

fensive career records. After suffering a season-ending knee injury

six games into the 2009 season, senior Laura Laufenberg will bring her leadership and talent back to the midfield for the Lady Tigers. Junior Lizzy Hildebrandt, who could also see time as defender, offers versatility and a proven scoring threat to the midfield. Julia Ignacio, a 21-game starter in 2009, also provides scoring and good ball handling ability to the midfield cast.

A trio of freshmen will add depth to the mid-field for the Lady Tigers. Kelley Gravlin, Christa-bel Oduro and Aja Strnadova will all compete for playing time this season and add depth and skill to the midfield.

dEFENdERS Coupled with three-straight C-USA Champi-

onships, the Lady Tiger defense allowed oppo-nents an average of less than one goal per game for the third-straight season. Although C-USA Defensive Player of the Year, Kelsey Bakker will be unable to suit up for Memphis in 2010, Mem-phis returns three starters on defense that limit opponent’s opportunities to score.

Seniors Brittany Hance and Krista Turner will anchor the Lady Tiger defense. The duo has

Last season, Memphis became the first school to win three-straight Conference USA Championships. In 2010, the Lady Tigers return 10 starters from the 2009 championship squad and will attempt to win a fourth-straight championship. The goals for Memphis

don’t stop there as Coach Brooks Monaghan hopes his 11th season proves to be the season that Memphis claims the program’s first NCAA Tournament victory.

switched positions since their freshmen seasons, but is each a key factor in the success of the program in the last three seasons.

Tara Telford also returns to the fray after putting up a strong showing during her sophomore campaign. Fel-low juniors Kelsey Robson and Tarah Kerr return to the backfield as well. Sophomore’s Bailey Pembroke, Lindsay Bell and Christie Kline will build off their fresh-men seasons and vie for time in 2010.

Two freshmen, Avery Dellheim and Ashley Barks-dale, are expected to play versatile roles for the Lady Tigers.

GOAlKEEPERS

Only two opponents scored more than two goals in a game against Memphis a season ago. The Lady Tiger keepers posted a school-record 12 shutouts, in-cluding three shutouts over ranked opponents.

Elise Kuhar-Pitters will enter the season as the starter, and few C-USA teams boast a player in goal as talented as the Washington native. Kuhar-Pitters start-ed 22 games for Memphis a season ago, going 15-7-0, while posting a single-season record 11 shutouts.

“She’s only a junior, but she had a great spring,” Monaghan said. “If she can stay healthy, she can be really special.”

Also getting time in front of the net will be Jordan Boyle and Nikki Unland. Boyle played in one con-test last year with one shutout and seven saves.

ACAdEMICS

With great success on the field, the Lady Tigers have had equal success in the classroom. For the past three seasons Memphis has claimed three-straight C-USA Championships, but more importantly the student-athletes have earned three-straight National Soccer Coaches Association of Amer-ica (NSCAA) Team Academic Awards. The past two semesters, the Lady Ti-gers have posted a team grade-point average of 3.6 or higher. In 2010, Memphis will set its sights on set-ting a program record GPA and its fourth-straight NSCAA Team Aca-demic Award.

SCHEdulE

The Lady Tigers again look to at-tack one of the toughest schedules of any team in the region.

After a preseason match-up at Western Kentucky University on Aug. 13, the Lady Tigers will travel to St. Louis, Mo., on Fri., Aug. 20 to take on the Saint Louis University Billikens to open the 2010 season. Mem-phis will open the season on the road for the second-straight season and third time since 2006. Memphis is 3-0 when it opens the season on the road.

Memphis will open the home non-conference sched-ule two days later by hosting the Samford Bulldogs on Aug. 22. The following weekend, the LSU Tigers, a three-time defending SEC West Division Champion, will visit the Bluff City for a Saturday night match-up on Aug. 28. LSU ended the 2009 campaign with the 16th-ranked RPI, finishing 16-4-5 on the season and ad-

vancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. After the two-game home-stand, the Lady Tigers hit

the road to Stillwater, Okla., to face another NCAA participant on Fri., Sept. 3. Winners of the 2009 Big 12 Conference Tournament, Oklahoma State finished the 2009 season at 15-7-2 and will welcome the Lady Tigers for the first-ever match-up between the two programs.

The Lady Tigers will conclude the road trip with a match-up against Sun Belt Conference member Arkansas-Little Rock on Sun., Sept. 5. Memphis will return to Mike Rose Soccer Complex to host Alabama on Fri., Sept. 10.

Memphis will continue the non-conference sched-ule with rival Ole Miss in Oxford, Miss., on Sun., Sept. 12. The Rebels will have a new face on the sideline for 2010 after head coach Steve Holeman accepted the head coaching job at the University of Georgia.

The Tigers will conclude the non-conference sched-ule with a match-up against the TCU Horned Frogs on Fri., Sept. 17. Memphis and TCU have squared off four times with the last match-up being in 2004.

As three-time defending C-USA champions, the Lady Tigers will open defense of their title with a road trip to Colorado Springs, Colo., to take on Colorado College on Sept. 24. After facing Colorado College, Memphis will travel to El Paso, Texas, to face the UTEP Miners on Sun., Sept. 26.

In the first of four-straight home conference games and seven total home conference matches,

Memphis will face the UCF Knights on Fri., Oct. 1. UCF finished with an RPI of 11 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tour-nament. Southern Miss visits Memphis on Sun., Oct. 3 to complete the first weekend of October for the Lady Tigers. October has been kind to the Lady Tigers over the past three seasons as Memphis has a 19-5-1 record since October 2007.

East Carolina and Mar-shall will visit Mike Rose Soc-cer Complex on Oct. 8 and 10, respectively, to complete the four-game homestand. Memphis will hit the road for the final time in the regular sea-

son for tilts with Tulsa and SMU the following weekend. Tulsa will host to the Lady Tigers on Fri., Oct. 15 and Memphis faces the SMU Mus-tangs on Sun., Oct. 17.

The Lady Tigers will wrap-up the 2010 home schedule with three C-USA contests at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Rice is slated to visit Memphis on Fri., Oct. 22, Houston visits on Sun., Oct. 24 and UAB will visit Memphis for the second-straight season to conclude the regular season for each team on Thur., Oct. 28.

Memphis will look for an unprecedented fourth-straight C-USA Championship in Orlando, Fla., begin-ning Nov. 3 on the campus of UCF.

Ten seasons ago, Brooks Monaghan took over the Lady Tiger soc-cer program in hopes of taking the five-year program to new heights. After claiming its’ third-straight Conference USA Championship in 2009, the Uni-versity of Memphis women’s soccer program is now force to be reckoned with. Asked what his one lasting impression on the program would be and why in 2000, Monaghan responded, “I would like my athletes to know that I gave everything I had to make this program better. I would want the girls to leave here knowing that they not only grew as players, but also as people.” The Lady Tiger program has flourished on and off the field since Monaghan’s tenure began back in 2000. The squad has claimed three-straight National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Awards, the 2009 C-USA Sport Academic Award, 12 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District IV selections and two NSCAA/Adidas Scholar All-Americans. Since Monaghan’s first season in 2000, the team has not posted a composite grade-point average below 3.0. Monaghan, the 2007 C-USA Coach of the Year, can look at the program in 2010 and see that his players have grown as players and people. The Lady Tigers have claimed three-straight C-USA Championships en route the program’s first three trips to the NCAA Tournament, 12 C-USA Player of the Year honorees, 24 All-C-USA honorees and 10 All-C-USA Freshman team selections. Under the guidance of Monaghan, forward Ashley Berra was honored as the program’s first NSCAA All-American. “The most important thing we can do as coaches is try to prepare young people for success later in life,” Monaghan said. “Soccer is important to me, and I want to win. However, the foundation of our program is the student-athlete.” In 2009, Memphis climbed as high as 17th in the national polls for the first time in program history. With three victories over ranked opponents in 2009, the Lady Tigers have gained recognition as one of the nation’s best women’s soccer programs. With a record of 16-7-0 in 2009, Memphis soc-cer has an all-time record of 144-141-15. Monaghan reached the 100 win plateau in 2009 with a 2-0 victory over Southern Miss in the C-USA season opener. Later that same season with a 3-0 victory over ninth-ranked UCF in the C-USA Women’s Soccer Cham-pionship game, Monaghan captured his 110th career victory to enter 2010 with a career record of 110-81-11 (.572).

“Honestly, I really had no clue that was my 100th win,” Monaghan said. “It is great. Every game is as important as the next. The credit really goes out to the team. They go out there and get it done. It is really great to have been here long enough to get 100 wins and to see the program progress to where it is at today. Hopefully, I will be able to get a few more wins in my career at Memphis.” As the program has risen among the nation’s best, the play of the Lady Tigers has improved. Monaghan has led his team to a 24-7-3 record on the road in the last four seasons, including victories over 25th-ranked LSU and 20th-ranked UCF in 2009. Prior to taking on the head coaching duties, Monaghan served as the goalkeeping coach for former coach Les Szabo. As the primary goalkeeper coach, Monaghan was a vital part of Szabo’s staff during the program’s first four seasons. When Monaghan became the goalkeepers coach for the Lady Tigers, he was already familiar with the demands of running a successful college soccer program, having enjoyed tremendous success during his playing career at Memphis. The former goalkeeper still holds school records for single-season shutouts (11) and career shutouts (24). His 298 career saves rank second all-time and he is second in single-season goals-against av-erage (0.80). He was named first team All-Great Midwest Conference in 1992 after helping lead the Tigers to a share of a conference title. In 1993, Monaghan was the Defensive MVP of the league’s championship game, helping the Tigers to their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance. His 38 wins at goalkeeper still stand as the school record. “To be a part of Memphis from so many different angles - first as a player, then as an assistant and now as a head coach - has been wonder-ful,” Monaghan said. “I grew up here, and I’ve always loved the city and the school. Now I get to be a part of building a winning program at my alma mater, and that’s a dream come true.” A former prep standout at Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, Monaghan’s collegiate play helped earn him a spot on the U.S. U-20 Na-tional Squad. Monaghan also played professionally, spending two seasons with the New Orleans Gamblers from 1995-96 and one with the Memphis Express in 2002. A Memphis native, Monaghan received a bachelor’s degree in busi-ness management from Memphis in 1994. He is single and resides in Col-lierville

Three years in a row, head coach Brooks Monaghan has taken his University of Memphis women’s soccer team into the C-USA Tournament as the league’s regular season co-champions. At the end of the C-USA Championship the past three years, Monaghan has found himself hoisting the C-USA Championship tro-

phy in the air, and three years in a row, he has found his Lady Tigers in the NCAA Tournament.

Memphis native and longtime professional goalkeeping star Jonny Walker joined Coach Brooks Monaghan’s staff in 2009. Walker brings with him more than a decade of record-setting professional experience, including becoming the first American soccer player to establish a successful soccer career in South America (Chile) and completing two different stints in Major League Soccer (MLS). “We are extremely fortunate to add Jonny Walker to our staff here at the University of Memphis,” Monaghan said. “The playing experience he brings is second to none. His experience playing for teams in MLS, Chile, and the national teams is some-thing that is very hard to find.” Walker made an immediate impact on the goalkeeping trio of Elise Kuhar-Pitters, Jordan Boyle and Nikki Unland in his first season at the U of M. Helped by a tenacious back line of defense, the goalkeepers combined for a school-record 12 shutouts. With the guidance of Walker, Kuhar-Pitters set the in-dividual shutout record at 11. The Lady Tigers also posted the second-best goals-against average in program history at 0.87, only the third sub-1.00 average in the 15 year history of the pro-gram. Kuhar-Pitters also became the first Lady Tiger netminder honored as a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Central Team selection. As a professional, Walker was a member of Universidad Catolica’s championship team in Chile’s first division in 2002, and also played in multiple Copa Libertadores tournaments. He finished his South American career with Colo Colo, the only Chil-ean club to ever win Copa Libertadores. Walker’s most recent professional stop was with the MLS’s Columbus Crew, where he won the team’s 2005 Defensive Player of the Year Award after finishing second in MLS with a GAA of 1.12. From 2003-05, Walker played with MLS’s NY/NJ MetroStars, and in 2003 he became the third goalkeeper in MLS history to finish a season with a sub-1.00 GAA with a league-best 0.95 GAA. In 2004, Walker started and played three matches for the U.S. National Team, including a 1-0 shutout over Mexico. Prior to returning to the U.S. in 2003, Walker spent six months with Colo Colo in Chile’s First Division. From 1997-2002, Walker broke numerous national records for Universidad Catolica in Chile’s First Division. In 2002, Walker was named Best Goalkeeper of the Chilean Apertura National Champion-ship after Universidad won the National Championship. That year, Walker set a club record going 708 minutes without being scored on, a record just broken in 2008. In 2001, Walker won the Chilean Goalkeeper of the Year. In 1998, on loan from Catolica, Walker played for Club Hauchipato and was named the team’s MVP. Prior to going overseas, Walker played one season with the Dallas Burn of the MLS in 1996, and began his professional career with the Memphis Jackals of the United States Indoor Soccer League. Walker is also very involved with the Leukemia and Lym-phoma Society, giving free soccer clinics to kids who raise the most money through their soccer club for the Soccer Kicks for Cancer program. In 2005, Walker was named the Ambassador for the State of Tennessee for the Leukemia and Lymphoma So-ciety. Walker graduated from Louisville in 2007. He and his wife, Shauna, have a son, Seth.

Jodi Grant is every head coach’s wish. She is an as-sistant coach whose talent goes beyond any boundaries. Grant has been a part of the women’s soccer program since its inception in 1995. Along with head coach Brooks Monaghan, Grant has led the Lady Tiger program to three-straight Conference USA Championship titles and its first three NCAA College Cup appearances. “This program would not be where it is without Jodi,” Monaghan said. “I look at her as a co-head coach. Jodi is irreplaceable, and she deserves as much credit as I do for our success.” A native of Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada, Grant enters her 11th season as a full-time assistant coach with the Lady Tigers in 2010. Prior to that, she served as a grad-uate assistant coach for one season and as a volunteer assistant coach for a year. Grant has also been a great recruiter in Canada, as Memphis has brought in several Canadians over the past few years. Grant first came to the University of Memphis as a player on the inaugural Lady Tiger squad in 1995. In her four seasons in the Blue and Gray, Grant tal-lied 94 points, 33 goals and 26 assists, setting program records in points and goals. Grant’s records have since been passed by recently-graduated forward Kylie Hayes (2005-08). Grant is also the co-holder of the record for most assists in a game (4) and is second all-time in school history in assists in a season (11) and career (26). A third team All-C-USA selection as a junior in 1997, Grant was also named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team in 1995. She was recognized for her on-field success as the first women’s soccer student-athlete inducted into the M Club Hall of Fame. In addition to helping Monaghan with on-field coach-ing duties and recruiting, Grant has also played an instru-mental part in the Lady Tigers’ success in the classroom. During five out of the last six seasons, Memphis was the recipient of the women’s soccer team academic award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), and in the last three semesters Memphis has had 24 or more players finish with a grade-point average above 3.0. The 2009 Lady Tigers combined to post a pro-gram-record team grade-point average of 3.6 the last two semesters. “Jodi is a great tactician on the field, but she’s just as good in teaching the kids off the field,” Monaghan said. “She is great role model for all of the players and really understands where they are coming from.” Grant earned her undergraduate degree in exercise and sport science from Memphis in 1999 and also earned a master’s degree in student personnel services from the U of M in 2002. Formerly Jodi Fisher, she married Mem-phis men’s soccer head coach Richie Grant in May 2006. She gave birth to a son, Hayden, in January of 2009. The Grant family resides in Memphis.

RECORd SETTERS The 2009 University of Memphis soccer team etched their names in the program record book with three new team records. Goalkeepers Elise Kuhar-Pit-ters and Jordan Boyle combined for a single-season re-cord of 12 shutouts en route a school record 0.87 goals-against average. In the 4-0 victory over the University of Evansville, the Lady Tigers combined for a single-game school record 50 shots, including an individual game re-cord tying 10 shots from Melissa Smith. Kuhar-Pitters paced the Lady Tiger defense with a single-season re-cord of 11 shutouts. Over the course of the season, the netminder held the opposition scoreless in back-to-back games five times, including two shutouts against nation-ally ranked UCF. Kuhar-Pitters set a new single-sea-son record for goalkeeping minutes played with 1,990 minutes logged between the goalposts for the C-USA Champions.

the 2009 University of Memphis women’s soccer team had no intentions of slipping to the back of the pack after back-to-back C-USA Championships. The Lady Tigers didn’t. In 2009, Memphis won the C-USA Tournament crown, garnered its third NCAA Championship appearance, and registered 16 more wins

under Coach Brooks Monaghan. The Lady Tigers broke records on-and-off the field and combined the school’s winningest senior class ever with possibly its most talented freshmen and sophomore corps in history.

IN THE POllS After a 2-0 victory at 25th-ranked LSU to open the season, the Lady Tigers entered the top-25 polls for the first time since 2007. Soccer America ranked Memphis 25th after the shutout victory. Following a 4-0 win versus UALR, the Lady Tigers climbed to 24th in the Soccer America poll, marking the highest ranking in program history. Claiming its’ third-straight C-USA Champion-ship at the C-USA Tournament, the Lady Tigers climbed to 17th in the Soccer America poll prior the NCAA first round match-up with Texas A&M. Memphis completed the 2009 campaign ranked eighth or better throughout the season in the NSCAA Central Region polls. The Lady Tigers were ranked third in the central region six weeks out of the season including a four-week streak in October. In the final regular season poll released by the NSCAA, Memphis received 54 votes which slotted them 26th in the national poll and first in the Central Region.

SHOOTING STARS Using her quick speed to get behind defenses, ju-nior forward Ashley Berra had an explosive season for the Lady Tigers, leading the team and C-USA with 38 points. Berra led the team and C-USA with 15 goals and posted a team best eight assists. In the midfield, junior midfielder Vendula Strna-dova continued her prolific career with 14 points on the season. Strnadova led the Lady Tigers with 68 shots, moving her into second place for career shots at the U of M with 181 shots.

Freshman forward Taylor Isenhower capped off her first season at the U of M, earning Offensive MVP honors of the C-USA Tournament. Isenhower helped the Lady Tigers claim their third-straight championship with two goals in the opening round of the tournament. Isenhower finished the season second on the team in scoring with 15 points and second on the team in goals with six.

SENIOR ClASS RAISES THE BAR The 2009 senior class of Brittany Baldwin and Tori Dalton go down in the Lady Tiger history book as the winningest class to ever play soccer at the University of Memphis. The seniors posted marks of 11-6-3 in 2006, 17-4-1 in 2007, 15-5-2 in 2008 and 16-7-0 in 2009, total-ing 59 wins while wearing the Blue and Gray.

dIAPER dANdIES (FRESHMEN) Joining the two-time defending C-USA Champions and the expectations that come with a winning team is no easy task, but the 2009 freshmen class filled the role to help the Lady Tigers claim a third-straight C-USA Championship. Taylor Isenhower and Averi Hall-man earned C-USA All-Freshman Team honors with a combined eight goals and 10 assists between the pair. Isenhower earned C-USA Tournament Offensive MVP honors and was named C-USA Offensive Player of the Week in late October. Hallman was second on the team in assists with seven, tied for the most by any freshman in program history.

Dr. Shirley C. Raines became the 11th president of the University of Memphis on July 1, 2001. She is the first woman to hold the presidency of the University, which was found-ed in 1912. The University is classified by the Carne-gie Foundation for the Advancement of Teach-ing as a high research university, with approxi-mately 22,000 students and 2,500 employees. Previous to her appointment at the Univer-sity of Memphis, Dr. Raines was Vice Chancel-lor for Academic Services and Dean of the Col-lege of Education at the University of Kentucky. While at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, she received the Distinguished Fac-ulty Member award and has received two re-search awards from the Eastern Educational Research Association. She is the author of 14 books and numerous journal articles and is widely regarded as an expert in teacher educa-tion and early childhood education. During the years of Dr. Raines’ tenure at the University of Memphis, the following build-ing projects have been completed: the FedEx Institute of Technology, the Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management, the Student Activities Plaza and fountain, the clock tower, University Services Building with new bookstore, additions to the Carpenter Stu-dent Housing Complex, the renovation of Wilder Tower, which is devoted to student services. Just in the last year, grand openings have been held for the Law School, which was relocated to the historic downtown location on the Missis-sippi River, the new University Center and the Living Learning Residence Complex.

Improvement to athletic facilities have also been a priority with the construction of the Athletic Training Facility, Tiger Softball Complex, FedEx-Park, Frank L. Flautt Golf Center, and upgrades and renovations to the football training facilities, Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium and the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Described in The Commercial Appeal as “powerful, prepared and personable,” she has become known for her effective work in building productive partnerships on and off the campus. This emphasis has enabled the University to realize significant increases in annual giving to the University. Establishment of the University of Memphis Research Foundation along with the University’s focus on engaged scholarship in the community has facilitated an increase of sponsored research grants and contract awards by almost 100% since the beginning of Dr. Raines’ tenure in 2001. Major focus areas of her work with students include an increased emphasis on the retention of students, expan-sion of the University’s Honors and Emerg-ing Leaders programs, the establishment of a guaranteed internship program for qualified students, living learning residential and curricu-lar learning communities throughout campus. Dr. Raines served on the board for the NCAA for the past five years and chaired the Presidential Task Force Oversight and Monitor-ing Group while also serving on the Board of Directors of C-USA. While Chair of the Board of Directors of C-USA, Dr. Raines led the con-ference through realignment. The April 2009 is-sue of Business TN, included her on the maga-zine’s list of the 100 most powerful people in Tennessee.

Dr. Raines earned her Doctorate in Edu-cation and her Master of Science degree from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Her Bachelor of Science degree is from the Uni-versity of Tennessee at Martin. She also com-pleted the Management Development Program from the Harvard Graduate School of Educa-tion. She has returned to Harvard for the past three years as a keynote speaker for the In-stitutes for Higher Education addressing new university presidents and chancellors. A native of Bells, Tennessee, she is mar-ried to retired professor, Dr. Robert J. Canady. In his retirement, he is a stained glass artist and a private pilot. Bob and Shirley are the parents of four adult children and four grand-children.

R.C. Johnson came aboard in February of 1996 and immediately set forth in bringing U of M Tiger athletics into national prominence. Over the last 14 years, the dynamic adminis-trator has built Tiger Athletics into a nationally-recognized program that has been to five bowl games in the last seven years and played for the Men’s Basketball National Champion-ship title in 2007-08. In addition, for the last 11 straight years, donations to the department have continued to rise, and on June 30, 2010, a record-setting $7.3 million was announced by the Tiger Scholarship Fund. Also in the last seven years under John-son, the Tigers have captured 14 total C-USA championships in men’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s golf and men’s track. The men’s basketball program has garnered five regular-season titles (2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009) and four C-USA Tour-nament championships (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009), while the women’s soccer program claimed consecutive league championships in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Johnson is currently spearheading his second major capital campaign which benefits nearly every area of the Tiger Athletic Depart-ment. Included in the $12.9 million project is a new addition to the Athletic Office Building, a weight room and turf practice field for Tiger Football, a redesign of the Tiger baseball stadi-um that was unveiled for the 2010 season, the completed golf practice facility, a renovation of the Finch Center men’s basketball practice fa-cility, a renovation of the women’s basketball and volleyball locker rooms and the Anfernee Hardaway Hall of Fame to honor Tiger athletes

Johnson’s first capital campaign was pre-viously the largest fund-raising effort in the history of Memphis athletics. The $8 million campaign included a new 8,000-square-foot football and basketball office complex addition, a new basketball practice facility, which is still considered one of the best in the country, and a complete renovation of the Murphy Athletic Complex. During his tenure, Johnson has created the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, the Tiger Scholarship Fund Board of Directors and the Athletic Director’s Ambassador’s Club. The Ambassador’s Club, which started with two members in 1997, has reached an all-time high of 41 members under Johnson. A significant revenue source for Tiger Athletics, members of the Ambassador’s Club pledge to commit $500,000. In June 2007, Johnson inked a lucrative long-term contract extension with Learfield Sports, which enabled Tiger Sports Proper-ties to retain the multimedia rights for Memphis Athletics through 2017. The Tigers signed on with Learfield Sports in 2001, granting the part-ner radio and television rights, athletic venue signage, game day promotions and sponsor-ships, as well as the official athletic department website. Terms for the contract call for the Ti-gers to receive a financial guarantee each year of the agreement and to participate in annual revenue sharing. In 2008, the U of M entered into a five-year, $11.3 million partnership with Nike to provide shoes, apparel and equipment for all Tiger athletic teams. A believer in academic excellence as well as athletic success and national prominence, Johnson leads a department that set a school record with 51 percent of its student-athletes achieving a 3.0 or higher during the spring 2010 semester. For the most recent academic year, which includes fall 2009 and spring 2010, 339 student-athletes earned at least a 3.0 GPA

and eight had a 4.0 for the year and 33 others had a 4.0 either in the fall or spring. For the spring 2010 semester, the athletic department as a whole posted its highest GPA ever with a 2.94 and 23 student-athletes garnered a 4.0 GPA. In May 2010, 48 athletes earned their de-grees, marking the largest group for one cer-emony since 2002 when the athletic academic services department began keeping record. Before taking over Tiger Athletics, John-son was responsible for directing a Temple pro-gram with more than 500 student-athletes in 20 men’s and women’s intercollegiate sports, including nationally-visible programs in men’s basketball and football. He was named Tem-ple’s director of athletics on May 9, 1994, after serving nearly six years as director of athletics at Miami (Ohio) University. He had also previ-ously led the department at Eastern Illinois from 1980-88, and was the associate athletic director at Northern Iowa from 1974-80. A former football coach himself, John-son served as an assistant at Mankato State University from 1968-74. He coached at Youngstown State University during the 1967 and 1968 seasons after serving as an assistant coach at Northern Iowa (1965-67) and the Uni-versity of Iowa (1963-65). An Ottawa, Ill., native, Johnson holds his bachelor’s degree in sociology from the Univer-sity of Iowa in 1965 and earned his master’s de-gree in physical education from the University of Northern Iowa in 1967. Johnson is a member of the National Association of College Directors of Athletics and serves on the NCAA Leadership Council. A veteran administrator in Conference USA, Johnson sits on both the C-USA Bowl Committee and the league’s Finance Commit-tee. In addition, he is a member of the University of Memphis President’s Council. Johnson and his wife, Melba, have three children: Jeff, P.A. and Michelle; five grandchil-dren and one great grandson.

For almost a century the University of Memphis has been a catalyst for progress in the city of Memphis, the state of Tennessee and the surrounding Mid-South region. From its inception as a normal school dedicated to the education of public school teachers, to its role today as an educator of technologically-savvy graduates who face a complex world, the University of Memphis has always fulfilled its current mission while looking forward to and planning for its future. Exceptional students from Tennes-see, from every other state in the nation and from almost 100 countries around the world choose to attend the University of Memphis. They come here on the recommendation of their major professors at European universi-ties; they come here to study subjects that are offered nowhere else; they come to study alongside men and women who are recog-nized and respected throughout the academic and scientific communities as foremost in their fields. Ever forward-looking, the University of Memphis is poised to enter one of its most his-toric and productive periods. From the faculty and staff we have in place to our alumni and benefactors, our “people assets” have never been more willing, able and generous in their efforts to build an academic environment that makes a life-long impact on the young minds at the U of M. The University of Memphis was founded under the auspices of the General Education Bill, enacted by the Tennessee Legislature in 1909. Known originally as West Tennessee State Normal School, the institution opened its doors Sept. 10, 1912, with Dr. Seymour A. Mynders as president. Students in the first classes selected blue and gray as the school colors and the tiger as the mascot. Tradition holds that the colors, those of the opposing armies during the Civil War, were chosen in commemoration of the reuniting of the country after that divisive conflict. Over the next decade, The Desoto year-book was created, the first library was opened in the Administration Building, the first dining hall was built and the first men’s dorm was built; today that dorm, Scates Hall, houses the College of Arts and Sciences’ Dean’s offices. In 1925 the name of the college changed to West Tennessee State Teachers College. Three years later, the Brister Library was built, named after two-term president John W. Brister. In 1931 the students created a campus newspaper, The Tiger Rag; and in 1935 the school’s agriculture department was discontinued. The college changed names again in 1941, becoming Memphis State College, and in 1946, J. Millard “Jack” Smith became presi-

dent - the first alumnus to hold the position. In 1950 graduate studies were initiated, and in 1954 the school switched from a quarter to a semester system. In 1957 the state legislature designated Memphis State full university status. In 1959 the university admitted its first African American students, and the first doctoral programs began in 1966. The 1970s, under President Cecil C. Humphreys, saw new buildings constructed across the campus, including a University Center and a 12-story library. In 1983 MSU became the first public university in Tennessee to gain accreditation of its entire curriculum. The 1990s were characterized by anoth-er name change and another building boom. In 1994 MSU became the University of Mem-phis, and the Ned R. McWherter Library was completed. Moving into the 21st century, the Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management and the FedEx Institute of Technology have made their mark on the University landscape. Today, the University of Memphis is one of Tennessee’s three comprehensive doctor-al-extensive institutions of higher learning. Situated in a beautiful park-like setting in the state’s largest city, it is the flagship of the Ten-nessee Board of Regents system. It awards more than 3,000 degrees annually. With an enrollment of approximately 21,000 students, The University of Memphis has 24 Chairs of Excellence, more than any other Tennessee university, and five state-approved Centers of Excellence.

Considered the “Home of the Blues” and the “Birthplace of Rock ‘n Roll,” the city of Memphis’ musical roots run deep. How-ever, music is just a chapter in the history as well as the future of the city located in the heart of Mid-America. Memphis, named after the capital of ancient Egypt, boasts all the amenities you would expect in a city with over 1 million res-idents, while retaining the charm and down-to-earth feel of a small town. Downtown Memphis recently realized a building boom valued at $2.3 billion which transformed the heart of the city. One of the most visible projects was the construction of AutoZone Park, the downtown ballpark which is the home of the Memphis Redbirds, the St. Louis Cardinals’ Triple-A club. The 14,320-seat stadium includes 1,500 club seats, 48 luxury suites and is located at the corner of Third Street and Union Avenue across from the world-famous Peabody Hotel. The city’s newest downtown project is FedExForum, an entertainment arena that houses both the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association and the University of Memphis men’s basketball team. The $250 million state-of-the-art are-na features a 35,000-square-foot outdoor plaza where fans of all ages can gather before an event. The arena has over 100 points of sale for concession stands and four full-service restaurants. FedExForum is located one block south of Beale Street. Memphis’ musical roots can be traced to band leader W.C. Handy, who wrote the first blues song here in 1909, a campaign theme for Memphis mayor “Boss” Crump called “Boss Crump Blues” and later pub-lished as the “The Memphis Blues.” The sound soon caught on and blues bands filled the clubs along Beale. Young musi-cians who have performed along Beale include Muddy Waters, Furry Lewis, Albert King, Bobby “Blue” Bland and B.B. King. Beale Street has rapidly become the entertainment center of Memphis and visi-tors and locals alike enjoy the food and mu-sic offered in the various nightclubs. Where Beale Street meets the Mis-sissippi River is Tom Lee Park, site of the annual Beale Street Music Festival. The weekend-long event is just a part of the month-long Memphis in May International Festival which also includes the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest and the Sunset Symphony. Located within a block of Beale is Gib-son Guitar Memphis, which includes factory tours and cultural exhibits. Across the street

is the Smithsonian’s Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum located at the FedExForum, which includes artifacts documenting music’s past. Memphis’ musical roots also include Stax and Hi-Records as well as Sun Re-cords recording studio. Stax became known for “sweet soul music” through such art-ists as the MarKeys, Booker T. and the MGs, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave and Isaac Hayes. The Stax Mu-seum reopened on its original location at McLemore and Crump in the summer of 2003 and offers visitors a complete history of “Soulsville USA.” One of Hi-Records’ premier artists was Al Green. Sun Records’ most famous recording artist was Elvis Presley and also boasted Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash among its recording artists. Elvis Presley’s Graceland is one of the five most visited home tours in America and is the most famous home in the Unit-ed States after the White House. In 1991, Graceland was placed on the National Reg-ister of Historical Places. Over 600,000 visi-tors tour Graceland each year. Also located downtown is the beautiful Orpheum Theater which serves as a venue for performances by Ballet Memphis, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and traveling Broadway shows, as well as the Orpheum Classic Movies se-ries and other concerts. The city’s location makes Memphis a major distribution hub with two interstate highways intersecting the city. Memphis is

also home of FedEx, the nation’s largest package carrier which makes Memphis In-ternational Airport the world’s busiest cargo airport. Over 500 commercial passenger flights originate from Memphis International each day.
