season outlook1995 University of Memphis Soccer

A potent scoring attack and a solid de-fensive backfield highlight the 1995 Uni-versity of Memphis soccer squad as the Ti-gers prepare to begin play in the new Con-ference USA.

The Tigers return their top three scor-ers from the 1994 season, including lead-ing scorer Fergal Forde and 1993 leadingscorer Bernard Licari.

Head Coach Chris Bartels will alsohave a veteran defensive line to help easethe pressure on three young goaltenders theTigers will use in 1995 in an attempt toreplace three-year starter BrooksMonaghan who graduated last season.

Offense should be plentiful this sea-son for the Tigers, especially from the for-ward position. The U of M returns fiveplayers from last years squad to its frontline, including a healthy Bernard Licari.

'95 TIGERS RETURNVETERAN SQUAD

back

Licari, the Tigers' top goal scorer fromtwo seasons ago, returns to the Mem-phis lineup for his junior season and willbegin the 1995 season 100 percenthealthy, something that could not besaid last season. Licari sat out the be-ginning of last season recovering froman off-season back injury.

While Licari is a handful for op-posing defenders, mix in the duo ofScott Grant and Carter Fairley and

the Tigers have a scoring punch that willnot let up.

Grant finished last season as the Ti-gers' second leading scorer from his for-ward position. Grant tallied 22 points ashe registered nine goals and assisted onfour more. Grant also led the Tigers in shotattempts as he fired 58 shots on goal.

Grant started the '94 season slowly, buta late season surge brought him to the fore-front of the Tiger offense, a trend that Granthopes will continue into the 1995 season.

Memphis will also have its version ofthe 12th man, as Fairley returns for his se-nior season.

Fairley, who scored five goals on justnine shots last season, provided the Tigerswith excellent scoring punch off the bench.Fairley produced 11 points in a reserverole last season.

Second-year player RolandoAguillon will also see time on the Tigers'frontline this season.

Aguillon saw limited playing timelast season, but a good offseason and ayear of experience under his belt shouldallow him to become a prominent mem-ber of the Tiger offensive attack.

The Tigers are not hurting for talentat the midfield position, as they return sixmembers of last year's squad includingleading scorer Fergal Forde.

Forde emerged as a legitimate scor-ing threat last season, as he led the Tigerswith 12 goals and tied fellow midfielderTommy Smith for the team lead with eightassists. Forde's 32 points last season is thefifth highest point total in Tiger history.Smith, a senior from Memphis, returns to

his midfield position, where he likes

Robert Pepper and Justin Rose will anchor anexperienced Tiger defense

to put pressure on opposing defenses.Smith is coming off a 1994 season in whichhe scored 16 points. Smith tallied four goalsand a career-high eight assists.Joining Smith and Forde at the midfield po-sitions will be a wealth of experience. TheTigers will have to replace Russell Churchand Clint Browne, who were key ingredi-ents to the Tigers success the last three sea-sons, but are still very deep in the middle.

Veteran Phillip McDonnell will becounted on heavily to make up for the lossof Browne and Church. McDonnell, alongwith Smith, is probably the most experi-enced Tiger on this year's squad.

Senior Greg Gallina should also seeplaying time at the midfield position, add-ing plenty of depth to that position.

Ramon Aguillon, the brother of team-mate Rolando, returns for his sophomoreseason at Memphis and should be a realforce with one year of Divison I play un-der his belt.

Aguillon saw extended playing timelast year as a freshman. The strong leggedplayer from Monterey, Mexico, added ascoring dimension to the Tiger offense be-cause of his powerful free kicks.

Kurt Clemence also returns for hissophomore season after an impressivefreshman year with the Tigers in 1994.

Clemence, who stands just 5-2, playsmuch bigger for the Tigers, as his aggres-

sive style of play constantly puts pressureon opposing players.

Head coach Chris Bartels also has astrong defensive unit returning, and willcount on the defenders' strong play as theTigers wil l be without All-Conferencegoaltender Brooks Monaghan, who gradu-ated last season.

Leading the defensive unit for the Ti-gers is senior Justin Rose. Rose, who hasstarted his first three seasons at the U ofM, will begin the season healthy after miss-ing much of last season with an injuredankle. Rose missed seven games last sea-son because of the injury.

Joining Rose in the defensive back-field will be sophomores Jason Dunn andChris Morris. As freshmen last season, thetwo high school teammates proved thatthey were a force to be reckoned with.

Dunn started all 21 games last seasonfor the Tigers, the only defender to startand play in all 21 games.

Morris, who is the brother of formerTiger standout Rick Morris, proved lastyear that tough agressive play runs in thefamily. Reminiscent of his brother, Morris'aggressive style of play created problemsfor opposing players.

Junior Robert Pepper will return totheTiger backfield after battling injuriesfor most of the 1994 season. Pepper sawaction in nine games last season, start-ing eight of those matches.

Johnny Neff also returns for histhird season with the Tigers, and addsdepth to a talented Tiger defense.

If there is one position that Bartels wil lhave to concern himself with this season itwill be in goal. Gone from last season isAll-Great Midwest Conference performerMonaghan. After three solid years in goal, the Tigers will have to go with a freshmanas their last line of defense.

David Dipiazza, Tim Pogue and ClayCampbell will compete for the startingposition.

DiPiazza and Pogue were members oflast year's squad, but neither saw any ac-tion, as both were redshirted. Campbellcomes to theTigers as a true freshman fromtalent rich Germantown (Tenn.) HighSchool.

To make things easier for the younggoaltenders, Bartels has kept Monaghan onas a student coach. His experience andfamiliarity with theTiger defenders shouldprove beneficial in the long run.

The five-year plan took six, but TheUniversity of Memphis head soccer coachChris Bartels' plan was to build a winningprogram for The U of M and to lead theTigers to national prominence in the colle-giate soccer world.

Under Bartels guidance, The U of Mhas averaged just over 10 wins a seasonand has had just one losing year.

Bartels'1992squadposted a14-3-2record.The 14winsequalledthe mostever by aTiger soc-cer team,

and the .789 winning percentage was thebest ever for a U of M club. His teams haveproduced 11 GMC All-Conference selec-tions, including two GMC tournamentMVPs and four All-South selections. ButBartels most impressive accomplishmentsmay be for academics.

Bartels not only strives for excellenceon the field, but in the classroom as well. His teams have consistently been recog-nized by both the University and the GMC

as his 1990 recruiting class, his second, ledthe way in earning a tie with St. LouisUniversity as the regular season co-cham-pions of the Great Midwest Conference. His third recruiting class helped lead theTigers to their first NCAA appearence.Unsatisfied with the NCAA tournamentsnub in 1992, despite a 14-3-2 record,Bartels and the Tigers rallied in the 1993GMC tournament to defeat nationally-ranked SLU for the GMC title and theconference's first automatic bid to theNCAA tournament.

Bartels has continually improved theTigers' schedule in an effort to gain na-tional respect for The U of M. This year'sschedule is once again challenging, andwith the Tigers now competing in Confer-ence USA, the Tigers conference scheduleonly enhances the quality of competition.

The Tigers' 18-match slate includes10-time national champion and C-USAmember Saint Louis University on the road,non-conference matches with annual pow-erhouses Evansville and South Alabama, while opening the season out West, withgames against Portland and Washington.

This year's schedule includes eighthome games at Echles Field where theTigers have built an impressive 47-12-5(.717) record during Bartels' tenure. Over-all, the Tigers are 87-30-10 (.672) at home

iMen's Soccer Head Coach

for their academic achievements. The Ti-gers placed nine members on the GMCAll-Academic team in 1993 and 11 in1992. In 1992 and 1993, The U of Mrecognized Bartels' Tigers as the team withthe highest grade-point average. Duringthat time, the soccer squad also had thehighest graduation rate among The U of Mathletic programs.

Bartels eye for talent paid off in 1992,

in 12 years. Last season Memphis finished9-1-1 at Echles Field

Since Bartels arrived at The U of M in1988, he has seen major improvements inthe program and the soccer facilities.Bartels has worked with The U of M Ath-letic Department, Tiger Clubs, and theFriends of Soccer Club to make majorimprovements to Echles Field, home of theTigers. In 1992, all of the hard work paid

off. Permanent seating was increased to1,000 and the Tigers averaged just under800 fans per game. The season-high wasan overflow crowd of 1,290 against SaintLouis.

A New Jersey native, Bartels attendedRiver Dell High School in Oradell, N.J.,before signing a soccer scholarship withBowling Green State University. DuringhisjunioryearatBGSU, Bartels worked inpublic relations for the New York Cos-mos. After graduating in 1973 with a de-gree in journalism and public relations,Bartels stayed at BGSU as an assistantcoach until he became a player-coach forthe Athletes in Action soccer team. In1980, Bartels returned to BGSU as anassistant coach and physical education in-structor while earning a masters degree inphysical education.

Bartels, who has worked as generalmanager or coach for three professionalsoccer teams, arrived in Memphis in 1982as an assistant coach and Player PersonnelDirector for the Memphis Americans ofthe Major Indoor Soccer League. Later, heserved as the head coach and GeneralManager of the Kalamazoo Kangaroos inthe American Indoor Soccer Association.

From 1986 to 1987 Bartels was Gen-eral Manager of the Memphis Storm.

Bartels will lead his 1995 squad into the newlyformed Conference USA which features severalof the top soccer teams in the country

assistant coaches1995 University of Memphis Soccer

Toni Carbognani begins his third year as assistant soccercoach for The University of Memphis after enjoying a 17-yearprofessional soccer career.

Carbognani brings to the Tigers knowledge about the gameof soccer that can't be bought. His abilities as a player and a coachhave taken him around the world and back to Memphis.Carbognani made Memphis his permanent home in 1981 whenhe was with the Memphis Americans of the Major Indoor SoccerLeague. It was there when he first met Tiger head coach Chris

Bartels.Bartels was the assistant

coach of the Americans whenCarbognani was acquired fromthe New York Cosmos of theNorth American Soccer League.

Carbognani began his soccercareer at age nine with theHuracan club in Buenos Aires andstayed with them until he was 20years old when he signed his firstprofessional contract withIndependiente, a second divisionteam in Argentina. After threeyears, he was traded to SanTelmo,

another second division team. In his second year with SanTelmo, his team won the championship and moved to the first divisionwhere he stayed for another year until he was traded to Barcelona,Ecuador.

After three years in Barcelona, Carbognani signed with theCosmos in 1979. While in New York, he played with some of thegreatest names in soccer. Pele was gone, but Franle Beckenbauerwas there. Beckenbauer, a German, is the only man to ever playon and coach World Cup champions. Carlos Alberto, a formerBrazillian World Cup team captain was also Carbognani's Cos-mos teammate.

Carbognani played on several teams in the MISL and the

Men's Soccer Assistant Coach

National Professional Soccer League before closing out his ca-reer with a NPSL championship with the Chicago Power in 1991.

Since he has been with the Tigers, The U of M has shared aGreat Midwest Conference regular season championship with 10-time national champion St. Louis University, won one GMC tour-nament, and has been to the NCAA tournament. Carbognani alsocoaches the 15 and 16 year olds of the Memphis Futbol Club thathas advanced to several state tournaments.

Carbognani and his wife Trisha have two sons; Dominic, 3and Marco 1.

The University of Memphis

After wrapping up a brilliant three-year career at the Univer-sity of Memphis, Brooks Monaghan joins the Tigers coachingstaff as a student assistant coach.

Monaghan will be a vital part of coach Chris Bartels staff ashe will help groom the Tigers' goalkeepers for the upcoming sea-son. Monaghan left some large shoes to be filled, but with hisknowledge of the game still a part of the Tiger program, filingthose shoes will not be quite as difficult.

Monaghan was a three-year starter for the Tigers after trans-ferring from the University ofEvansville after his freshman sea-son. Monaghan, who was a prepstandout for Christian BrothersHigh School in Memphis, re-turned to his hometown, and wasan immediate impact on the U ofM program.

Monaghan led the Tigers totheir best season ever in 1992, ashis stingy goaltending led Mem-phis to a school best 14-3-2record, and co-champions of theGreat Midwest Conference. Dur-ing the 1992 season, of the 14

wins the Tigers posted 11 of those were shutouts by Monaghan. In fact, his 11 shutouts in 1992 were the most ever in a season, bya Tiger goalkeeper. Monaghan finished the 1992 season with agoals against average of 0.80.

Monaghan success didn't end there. In 1993, after a disap-pointing regular season, Monaghan turned it into high gear dur-ing the Great Midwest Conference Tournament, and led the Ti-gers to the GMC crown, and the team's first ever berth in theNCAA tournament.

Monaghan success on the soccer field began during his prepplaying days at Christian Brothers High School. Christian Broth-ers won two Tennessee State Championships during his career

men's Soccer Assistant Coachwith the Purple Wave.

Monaghan received the highest honor that a prep player canreceive, when he was named a High School All-American afterthe 1991 season. Monaghan was also a two-time All-State per-former for David Deitrich at CBHS.

season review 1995 University of Memphis Soccer

Russell Church earned all-conference honors withhis strong play in 1994

he University of Memphis soccer teamstarted the 1994 campaign with highhopes of building on Its previous suc-cess in the Great Midwest Conference

and of earning its first regular season title out-right. But as the injuries mounted, the Tigers'hopes and dreams faded away, as did its chanceof winning an outright GMC regular seasontitle. Tiger Head Coach Chris Bartels was dis-appointed in the Tigers 11-8-2 (2-4 in theGMC) record, but feels his squad played welllate in the season.

"Realistically, coming into the season Ithought we would win the regular season title. So in that sense 1 was a little disappointed,"Bartels said. "However, I was not disappointedin the level of play or in the level of effort theguys gave throughout the season."

Despite losing just two starters from lastyear's squad, Bartels knew those shoes wouldbe tough to fill.

"Having lost only two players was good, but in losing Thomas Ohlmeier, we lost a gamer. He could change the entire game with just onetouch," Bartels said. "Not only did we miss hisdominating ability, we missed his leadershipand maturity on the field."

But at the same time Bartels knew that withthe talent he had returning, the Tigers would beable to fill the void. And, with a few talentednewcomers, Bartels thought his team would bein position to make some noise within theconference. Bartels and his staff made the nec-essary adjustments and looked bright early inthe season.

Memphis began the season with a solidbackfield. Jason Dunn, from Houston High inGermantown, Tenn., began the season as Bartels'

only starting freshman, but with injuries toJustin Rose, Robert Pepper, Johnny Neff andthe defection of Brian Reddin, Bartels had todig deep into his stock of freshmen.

"We started off the season with startingjust one freshman in the back, but by the middleof the year, we were starting four freshmen inthe back," said Bartels. "We gave up some badgoals but these guys developed and maturedand the defense sorted itself out late in theseason."

Freshmen Jason Dunn, Chris Morris andKurt Clemence lived up to the challenge and allsaw significant playing time. The injuries havehealed and Bartels1 biggest problem now maybe "who gets the time."

Offensively, the Tigers had one of theirmost successful seasons ever.

With Fergal Forde's 10 goals leading theway, the Tigers amassed 52 goals, second mostever for a Tiger soccer team.

As evidence of its scoring prowess, 11different Tigers scored last season. In yearspast, all that opponents had to do was shut downone or two players to be successful against theTigers. This season, they had much more toworry about.

"If you key on (Bernard) Licari this year, you're probably going to get burnt by one of theother guys," Bartels said.

Licari, the Tigers' leading scorer of a yearago, spent the offseason in a cast from his neckto his waist while a stress fracture in his verte-brae healed. Licari, who played sparingly in theTigers first several matches, started in the Ti-gers' first GMC match against DePaul. Thejunior from Florianna, Malta, scored eight goalsand added three assists on the season.

Scott Grant, a junior from Benoni, SouthAfrica, led the Tigers with 53 shots and wassecond among the Tigers with 20 points. Grantscored eight goals on the year, including a pairof game-winners. Only Russell Church hadmore game-winners. But one of Bartels biggestsurprises may have been Church.

Like Grant, a native of Benoni, SouthAfrica, Church began the season on fire. Hescored two game-winners in the first twomatches. The senior co-captain was poised tolead the Tigers not only with his on-field lead-ership, but with his scoring ability as well.

Church ended the season with three game-winning goals, tops among the Tigers. He hadsix goals and four assists overall.

Midfielder Tommy Smith also had a pro-ductive year for Memphis. He scored just fourgoals but logged a team-leading eight assists.

Carter Fairley was up to his old tricks, giving Bartels instant offense. After scoringthree game-winners as a sophomore, Fairley, the junior from West Memphis, Ark., came offthe bench to spark the Tigers with five goals onjust nine shots.

Ramon Aguillon also provided some spark. The freshman from Monterey, Mexico, scoredtwo long distance goals off free kicks. He nettedthree goals for the season.

While the offense was thriving, the de-fense had its problems.

Despite registering six shutouts, the Ti-gers had to battle not only opposing teams, butinjuries and defections as well.

Brooks Monaghan and the Tigers gave up30 goals, but in the last six matches Memphisgave up only seven goals en route to registeringfour shutouts.

After a slow start Clint Browne and the Tigersfinished the season on a high note

The University of Memphis, whichfields teams in 16 NCAA sanctioned sports, will add women's soccer as an intercolle-giate sport for the 1995 season.

It is not hard to understand The U ofM's position when deciding to add women'ssoccer. There are more than 100 highschool teams and more than 2,300 girlswho play high school soccer in the state ofTennessee.

In 1995, Conference USA will spon-sor a women's soccer championship tour-nament to be held in Cincinnati, Ohio. Par-ticipating in that tournament will be theUniversity of Louisville, Cincinnati, UNCCharlotte, Marquette, The U of M andEvansville (only competes in women's soc-cer).

Memphian Shelley Heinz leads agroup of local and national players into theinnaugural season of Lady Tiger soccer.

Heinz, an All-Metro performer fromWhite Station High School, will be a keyingredient oftheTigers' arsenal. Heinz willsee time as a midfielder and a defender.According to head coach Les Szabo,Heinz's versatility and skill will help theLady Tigers in several ways.

"Shelley is a great athlete who can playand fill several different roles for us on thisteam, and we are lucky to have a player ofher caliber from right here in our backyard," Szabo said.

that should help mature are team as awhole," Szabo said.

Szabo has assembled a core of play-ers that look to make up the nucleus of aprogram on the rise at the University ofMemphis.

"We do not expect to go out our firstseason and win a National Championship,"Szabo said. "However I do believe that withthe talent we have on this team, we can goout and compete with anybody on ourschedule."

The Lady Tigers wil l have to gelquickly as they face a tough schedule whichincludes such non-conference foes asFlorida State, LSU, South Alabama, Mis-sissippi State and South Carolina.

While there are various unknownsheading into the innaugural season of LadyTiger soccer at The University of Mem-phis, one thing is clear: women's soccer onthe campus of The University of Memphisdefinitely heading in the right direction.

Joining Heinz from the Memphis areaare Catherine Brannon from MemphisCatholic, Kara Murphy from White Sta-tion and Lisa Zimmerman from St.Benedict's.Not all of the Lady Tigers' talent ishome grown, as Szabo has branchedout and brought in some top youngtalent from the United States as wellas Canada.

Goalkeeper Frances Currin fromPensacola (Fla.) High School was

an All-Star MVP in the Florida Senior HighSchool All-Star game.

"Frances is the goalkeeper we wantedand the goalkeeper we needed," Szabo said."She is a tremendous athlete and plays fear-lessly when she is in goal."

Currin is not the only Florida productwho will lead the Lady Tigers into theirfirst season. Midfielder Vicky Brown alsobrings her impressive credentials to the Uof M from Tampa, Fla.

Brown, the first player to be signedby the Lady Tiger soccer program, was alsoan All-State MVP in Florida.

"Vikki is very strong physically andcan play a couple of different positions forus if we need her to. She is an excellentplayer to help get this program up andgoing," Szabo said.

High school teammates ChristyCaswell, Jodi Fisher and StephanieBourigault bring valuable internationalexperience to the Lady Tiger program. The trio from Edmonton, Alberta,Canada have now played together forseven years and will continue their ca-reers at The University of Memphis.

All three players were members ofthe provincial champions that played inthree national championship tourna-ments and finished second in the 1994tournament. _

WHY TIGERS?When the University of Memphis first

fielded a football team in the fall of 1912,no one had selected a nickname for thesquad.

Early references to the football team, tabbed them only as the Blue and GrayWarriors of West Tennessee NormalSchool.

After the final game of the 1914 sea-son, there was a student parade. During thisevent, several Normal students shouted,"We fight like Tigers." The nickname wasborn.

More and more the nickname "Tigers"was used, particularly in campus publica-tions. But it did not catch on with the news-papers downtown. They continued to use"Normals" or the "Blue and Gray" whenreferring to the University.

Under coach Lester Barnard in 1922,Normal's football team gave a ring of truthto that old student yell about Tigers. Theteam adopted a motto - "Every Man ATiger" and went on to score 174 pointswhile allowing their opponents just 29points.

In the late 1920s, student publicationsand downtown newspapers began referringto the football team as the "Teachers" or"Tutors." The Tiger nickname would re-turn. But not until 1939 was it finallyadopted as the official nickname for theUniversity of Memphis.

A BENGAL FOR A MASCOTFor approximately 22 years, the side-

line mascot for the University of Memphisathletics has been the Bengal Tiger. TOMII, the name of the current mascot, puts inpersonal appearances at all Tiger footballgames as well as numerous basketballgames. TOM II has also been seen atTigerbaseball, soccer and women's basketballgames.

The first tiger, purchased by the High-land Hundred football booster group in1972, lived for 20 years and was housed atthe Memphis Zoo. TOM died in Februaryof 1992.

The story of how the first Tiger cubarrived in Memphis is quite interesting. OnNovember 9, 1972, the baby tiger wasplaced in a dog kennel in Michigan City,Ind., and flown to Chicago's O'Hare Inter-national Airport. There it was placed
