2000 Season Preview

2000 Tiger Soccer:A Balanced AttackAs Tiger head coach Richie Grant heads

into his second season at the helm of theMemphis Men's Soccer Team, he does so with abalanced ship. A team that is heavy on experi-nce and leadership will be counterbalanced

by the addition of ten freshmen to the roster. Ateam that has added several potent weaponson the offensive end has also shored up itsdefensive side with the addition of several keyplayers. In addition, a Tiger team that has alwaysbalanced local talent with talent from abroad hasadded players from Memphis, Texas, Oklahoma,Wisconsin, Vermont, Ireland, and Norway.

The Tigers lost six seniors off of last season's roster, and they are counting on this years crop of seniors to step upand take Memphis soccer to the next level. Leadership fromN i c k Glaser and Michael Shipman in the

Tiger midfield and RyanSchwaigert in the defensewill be counted on, sincemany of the incomingfreshmen will see signifi-

cant playing time. Upfront, senior Tommy White

W joins juniors Sean Fraser andLars Thorstensen in a potent

, ^ offensive combination of speed,*i^T physical play and skill. White brings

speed and an aggressive mentality intohis fourth season with the Tigers, and

r Fraser led the team in shots and goalsand was selected second-team all-C-USA in 1999. Thorstensen is coming to

the Tigers after spending the last twoseasons at Lambuth University in Jackson, Tenn., where hescored 56 goals in two seasons to lead the Lambuth men'steam through the Mid South Conference and was selected asan NAIA all-American as a sophomore. Sophomore KirkRicketts also returns for his second season as a Tiger afterscoring one goal in nine appearances in 1999.

In the midfield, seniors Nick Glaser and MichaelShipman will be joined again by junior Justin Stralka, who isexpected to play a significant role on boththe offensive and defensive sides of the fieldthis season. Junior Ken Matsuba returnsafter missing much of last season with afoot injury, and the upperclassmen willwelcome four newcomers to the Tigermidfieid. Local high school standoutGrant Paule, Texans Michael Floyd andDusty Brezovsky, and Wisconsin nativeNelson Ennis will all be counted on tocontribute significant minutes in the Tigermidfield this season. Grant Paule has anexcellent grasp of the game and impressive skills,

as he proved by leading his Houston H.S. team to a

Isecond consecutive NSCAA national championship in

the spring of 2000. Brezovsky and Ennis are bothW-^ natural left-sided players, which the Tigers lacked

last season. On the defensive end, the Tigers return two

of three consistent starters at the defenderposition from the 1999 squad. StephenLewis, a junior, and Ryan Schwaigert, a senior,

will command the Tiger backfield as co-captains this season. They are joined by senior

Davicl Medlock, who started the final two matches ofthe season, sophomore Chris Schmidt, and newcomers

Graham Gibbs, Josh Ravit, and Cory Shumate. Gibbs is anIrish recruit who has great potential and is expected to havean immediate impact on the Tiger defense. Shumate is aBartlett, Tenn., native and another product of the MemphisFutbol Club, which also produced Tommy White, RyanSchwaigert, Stephen Lewis, and former Tigers Brian Covey,Joey Lewis, and Stephen Brooks. Josh Ravit is a Vermontnative who brings excellent size and a strong right foot to thedefensive arsenal of the Tigers.

That defense will becounted on heavily, since allthree goalkeepers on the rosterthis season are true freshmen.Local high school standoutClark Talley, who teamedwith Paule on that NationalChampionship team for thelast two seasons, elected tostay home and will competefor the starting spot thisseason. He will be chal-lenged by Joshua Schmidt, another freshman who pos-sesses a great amount of poten-tial, and by Josh Isaacs, an excitingplayer who promises to be anemotiona leader from the net for Memphis in years to come.

Coach Grant also made some changes to theschedule going into his second season with the Tiger soccerprogram. The Tigers open the season by hosting the Mem-phis Invitational, which will include Birmingham Southern,Marshall, and Belmont, before travelling to invitationaltournaments at Southwest Missouri State, Charlotte, and

South Florida. Memphis will host conference gamesagainst perennial top-10 Saint Louis, defending

regular season conference champion UAB,. Marquette, and Louisville, as well as

nonconference games against WesternKentucky, Lipscomb University, andAlabama A&M. It promises to be anexciting season at the U of M this season,

' as experience and youth take the fieldtogether to take Tiger soccer to the next

level with a new brand of soccer.

1999 Season In Review

The 1999 season was an interesting onefor the men's soccer team at the University ofMemphis. They began the season with four winsand one loss, and the loss came to Southwest Mis-souri State. Southwest Missouri would go on tofinish the season with a record of 16-0-3 andranked as high as fourth in the country. The Tigersthen jumped out to a good start in conference playby upsetting Charlotte at Echels field to open theC-USA campaign. It was a hard fought, come frombehind victory for Memphis in which RyanSchwaigert hit two penalty shots and Sean Frasercrushed a game winner past the Charlotte keeperto cement the upset.

Then the Tigers travelled to New York toface Hartwick College and Fordham in the NikeHartwick Shootout. Memphis defeated both teamsto tie for first place in the invitational. They thenreturned home to find themselves ranked in theMidwestern Region and Steven Brooks was selected Confer-ence USA player of the week. The Tigers then turned theirattention to cross-town rivals Christian Brothers University, who

came out thirsting for re-venge on the Tigers foryears of bullying. A flatperformance by the Tigersversus an outstanding oneby the Buccaneers, coached by Tiger SoccerAlumnus GarethO'Sullivan, led to a tough3-1 loss for the Tigers.

The loss to CBUwas the first loss in a five-game losing streak. TheTigers' next four gameswere on the road againstSaint Louis, who was thirdin the country at the time,Marquette, the Universityo f

Wisconsin, and Western Kentucky. TheTigers then came home to host conferencerival and Top 25 ranked Cincinnati. GoalieMike Letterman and the Tiger defense shutdown UC's high-powered offense andMemphis came away with a 1 -0 upset vic-tory over the Bearcats. The Tigers rollercoaster season continued. A tough roadloss to UAB was followed by a difficulthome match against DePaul. DePaul up-set the Tigers in overtime by a score of 4-3, and all four of the Blue Demon goalscame off the foot of Christopher Greer.Memphis then came out on the wrong sideof a defensive battle against Louisville in a1 -0 road loss, and a road weary team re-turned home to face Central Arkansas.Memphis dropped their second game to aDivision II opponent during the season ina 4-2 loss to the Bears before taking out

jBrianCovf

their aggressions on Oral Roberts in a 3-0 game. This left the Tigers at 2-5 in conference play, butthey still held their future in their own hands. Mem-phis needed to finish in the top six in C-USA inorder to qualify for the conference tournament, and the Tigers were tied with South Florida andDePaul for the last two spots in the tournament.Memphis closed the regular season by hostingSouth Florida, and a win put them in the tourna-ment. The game was a physical, defensive one inwhich neither team could take control. SouthFlorida finally edged out the Tigers 1 -0, and endedthe Tigers hopes of returning to the C-USA tourna-ment.

The Tigers were led in 1999 by a core group ofsenior leaders. Bryan Covey, a four-year starter inthe goal and team co-captain, anchored a defensethat combined youth and experience. SophomoreStephen Lewis and junior Ryan Schwaigert were

permanent fixtures in the Tigers' defense last season, while se-nior Phillip Theile returned in the midseason after recoveringfrom a knee injury.

The other co-captain, Joey Lewis, led the midfield anddominated opposing play-ers with his footspeecl andball skills. In his five yearswith the Tiger soccer pro-gram, Lewis became acoach on the field for theTigers. Fellow senior CarlSchmitt, who played his firstthree seasons at South Ala-bama before they elimi-nated their soccer program, was also a vocal leader onthe field, he was joined byMichel Shipman, NickGlaser, and Justin Stralka, who were all underclass-men that contributed sig-

n i f i -cantly to both the offense and defense fortheTigers. Up front, the Tigers were led bysenior Steven Brooks, who came into the sea-son leading all active Tigers in scoring. Earlyin the season, Brooks received his second ca-reer conference player of the week award andfinished the season with five goals and a ca-reer high five assists. His fifteen points on theseason placed him second on the team in scor-ing. Forward Sean Fraser finished the seasonwith nine goals, one assist, and was named tothe C-USA second team in all-conference bal-loting. Also sharing time up front was TommyWhite, a tough nosed junior who used hisspeed to outrun defenses and set up lopsidedattacks.

While the season had a disappointingending for the Tigers, head coach Richie Grantand his returning players have much to lookforward to, for a strong foundation was laid bythe senior led 1999 Tiger soccer team.

"Clearly, R.C.Johnson is one of the premier athletic directors in the country," said U of M Presi-dent Dr. V Lane Rawlins. "We were seeking an individual with people skills, as wellas a deep caring about student-athletes and their futures.

"We searched long and hard for someone whom we felt had the talents to fitThe University of Memphis and the Memphis community, someone who was wellrespected in NCAA circles. We checked every resource that was available and feelthat we could not have found a more qualified individual with a better record."

Johnson initiated the start of a capital campaign to add a new 8,000-sciuare-foot football and basketball office complex to the current Athletic Office Building,a new basketball practice facility and a complete renovation of the Murphy Ath-letic Complex on Memphis' south campus.

The eight million dollar campaign is the largest fund raising effort in the his-tory of Memphis athletics and should oring the Tiger athletic facilities on-line withConference USA sister institutions.

During the spring of 1999, Johnson negotiated one of the richest radio broad-cast package in Tiger athletic history with WMC-AM 79 in Memphis. The three-year agreement calls for WMC to pay the University approximately $1.2 millionfor football and men's basketball rights.

University Facilities

The University of MemphisTiger athletic family has manyplaces to call home for intercolle-giate athletics.

In 1970, the University ofMemphis Athletic Department of-f icial ly opened the KennedySportsplex, a 140-acre complexlocated just south of the main cam-pus. The complex serves as thehome of the Tiger football, base-ball, soccer and track teams andoffers workout facilities for all Uof M sports.

All of the University of Mem-phis' home baseball games areplayed at Nat Buring Stadium, a1,200-seat facility adjacent toMurphy's main building. Recently, lights, new dugouts and a new en-closed press box were added, aswell as new blue chair back seats.Nat Buring was the site of the 1993Great Midwest Conference base-ball tournament.

Great Midwest Conference Trackand Field Championships.

Other features of MurphyComplex include an Olympic in-door pool and golf driving rangethat is used by the Tiger golf teams.A 5,000 square-foot Novagrass ar-tificial green was installed adjacentto the driving range in August of1992. The green, which featuresfour sand bunkers and a self-con-tained irrigation system, allowsboth men's and women's golfteams to practice their shortgames.

Tiger Traditions

WHY TIGERS?When the University of Memphis first

fielded a football team in the fall of 1912, no onehad selected a nickname for the squad.

Early references to the football team, tabbedthem only as the Blue and Gray Warriors ofWest Tennessee Normal School.

After the final game of the 1914 season, there was a student parade. During this event, several Normal students shouted, "We fight likeTigers". The nickname was born.

More and more the nickname "Tigers" wasused, particularly in campus publications. But itdid not catch on with the newspapers down-town. They continued to use "Normals" or the"Blue and Gray" when referring to the Univer-sity.

Under coach Lester Barnard in 1922,Normal's football team gave a ring of truth tothat old student yell about Tigers. The teamadopted a motto - "Every Man A Tiger" andwent on to score 174 points while allowing theiropponents just 29 points.

In the late 1920s, student publications anddowntown newspapers began referring to thefootball team as the "Teachers" or "Tutors". TheTiger nickname would return. But not until 1939was it finally adopted as the official nicknamefor the University of Memphis.

A BENGAL FOR A MASCOTFor almost 30 years, the sideline mascot

for the University of Memphis athletics has beenthe Bengal Tiger. TOM II, the name of the cur-rent mascot, puts in personal appearances at allTiger football games, as well as numerous bas-ketball games. TOM II has also been seen atTiger baseball, soccer and women's basketballgames.

The first tiger, purchased by the HighlandHundred (football booster group) in 1972, livedfor 20 years and was housed at the MemphisZoo. TOM died in February of 1992.

The story of how the first Tiger cub arrivedin Memphis is quite interesting. On November9,1972, the baby tiger was placed in a dog ken-nel in Michigan City, IN, and flown to Chicago'sO'Hare International Airport. There it was placedaboard a Delta flight and arrived in Memphis at3:00 AM. C. Cleveland Drennon, an attorneyand president of the Highland Hundred, ap-proved a check for S1,500 to buy the animal, andTOM was taken to athletic director BillyMurphy's office for a press conference.

In ceremonies at Liberty Bowl MemorialStadium, the Highland Hundred officially pre-sented TOM to the University on November 11,1972.

The zookeeper, at the suggestion of hisdaughter, called the little tiger, Shane. Once inMemphis, however, a contest was held to namethe mascot. More than 2,500 entries came in to acommittee chaired by Judge Harry Pierotti. Thelist ran from Spook, Sampson, Goliath, Bengo,Sultan, Sahib, Big Cat, Ptah, Touchdown, Sonny, and Shiloh to Bengie Wougie Bengal Boy fromTennessee.

Finally, the judges reduced the list to two:Shane and TOM, for Tigers of Memphis. TOMwon.

During his first few months in Memphis,Bill Proctor housed the tiger in his garage, whichwas redecorated by the Highland Hundred. TOMwas guarded by Proctor's hound dog.

TOM II came to the University of Mem-phis in the fall of 1992 and is housed at his newhome at Nixon Farms in Collierville, Tenn. Hisnew home is 3500 square feet and includes twopools, a waterfall, heated and air conditionedden box and has seperately, a complete medicalfacility for his care and upkeep. The young tigeris nearly 500 pounds and is expected to be aslarge or larger than his predecessor, TOM, whowas once the largest Bengal Tiger in captivity at550 pounds. There is even a birthday party forTOM II prior to each football season.

SCHOOL COLORSThe University of Mem-

phis' official school colors ofRoyal Blue and Gray were se-lected in the early 1900s.

The colors were chosen inan effort to show unity in a na-tion that was still recoveringfrom the effects of the CivilWar. The student body thoughtthat by picking the colors of theNorth and the South, the schoolwould show a togethernessamong all students.

Q SC A with Coach Monaghan

"We live together and die together"

What is your game philosophy and what playing style will your teamdisplay?

Our job as coaches is to motivate these players and to make sure that whenthey step out on the field thatthey give 110 percent. I thinkyou are goingtosee a more energized team this year. When they step out on the field theyare goingto bust theirtails and once the entire team is working hard andgiving everything they have, I think they will start to see this team becomesuccessful.

We wanttomakeotherteamsadjustto our style. I think in the past our teamwas asked to do the opposite and make adjustments to our opponents styleand I do not agree with that. I wantto find ourstyle and then make otherteams adjust.

What will be your primary focus during your first year as Head Coach?

to this year. There's goingto be a lot of changes, of course, and hopefullythose changes will be for the good. More importantly, we wantour players tonot only improve as players, but also asateam.

What type of player will you try to recruit into your program?

Obviously we wantto bring in the best players possible, but we also wanttomake sure thatthey fit in with the rest of the team. I want a player that hasgood leadership qualities and isn'tsomeone who will come in and causeproblems amongst the team, yet can still be social with the team, as well. When a team is close off the field, they are usually close on the field.

What would you like your players to take with them from yourprogram?

I would like my players to not only get better but to also gain a valuablelearning experience and leave here knowingthatthey gave 110 percent andnot to look back and wonder, what if?

What type of team motto will you enforce?

Our team motto would have to be that as a team, we live together and dietogether. Idefinitelydon'twantanyfingerpointing;Iwantthemtoknowthatour success comes asateam. We have to work as a team in orderto besuccessful.

How do you see this year's squad performing?

I have a lot of confidence and I thinkthe team hasa lot of confidence. Therehas been a change amongthe coaching staff but change is often very good.Justin talking with the team, they all sound excited and they've been workinghard this summer. Ifwecan get everyone on the same page, Ithinkwecanbe very successful.

What are the strengths and weaknesses from top to bottom?

I thinkone of our major strengths this year will be tine incomingfreshmanbecause they are goingto add a lot of depth to the team. As far asweaknesses, I don't really see any this year. In the beginning, they are goingto see a drastic change with the coaching staff and if there was a weaknessthatwould be it because they are goingto have to adapt. However, aslmentioned before, the players are all excited about the change and I think it'sgoingto be a smooth transition. I feel thatthe players are all looking atthis asa great opportunity because it's a new start. The program hasn't been thatsuccessful in the past and they're looking atthis as a great opportunity tobegin with a clean sheet

Which players will you be counting on to lead this year's squad?

I don't like think to that we our counting on one or two specific players, Hiketo think that we are countingon the whole team and as long as the wholeteam steps up, then I have no worries. I thinkourteam will definitely besuccessful. Obviously we want leadership from our upperdassman becausethe effort that they give and display will rub off on the younger players. As a whole, once the entire team steps up and we all feel like we're on thesame page, there isn't any doubt in my mind that we can become successful.

Of the incomingfreshman this year, who do you think will make thebiggest impact and why?

Idon'twant to single out any specific player, really. I knowthatwearedefinitely counting on ourgoalkeeper coming in from Sweden, she definitelyhasa lot of experience plus the factthatsheisn'tthe typical freshman. Shehappenstobe21 years old and has some professional experience abroad,so we hope she will bring in some leadership to the program. I alsothinkthattheentire incomingfreshman class will have a huge impact because theymake up almost half the team this year. If they decide to step up, that'sgoingto push the others and make for a more competitive environment andthat's what we want

What will be the biggest obstacle to overcome this year?

I thinkthe biggest obstacle will betoforget about the past. I thinkthateveryone is willingto throw last year away because the team wasn'tsuccessful and everyone is ready for a new start If we can getthe team totrustthe newcoachingstaff and forget about the pastthen I don'tseeanyobstacles standing in our way, this season.

If you could have one lasting impression on this program, what wouldit be and why?

I would like my atheletes to know that I gave everything I had to make thisprogram better. I would wantthe girls to leave here knowingthatthey notonly grew as players but also as people.

1999 Season Review

The 1999 season was a difficultone, as the Lady Tigers were plagued withkey injuries and a lack of consistent play.A few bright spots managed to shinethrough however, with the emergence ofnew leadership on the field and the vitalplay of depart!ng seniors Frances Currinand Meredith Smith.

Currin leaves the U of M as thecareer saves leader with 326. This pastseason, she also set the single-seasonrecord for saves and goals-against-averagewith 96 and 1.73, respectively. She postedtwo shutouts last season, the first comingin a 9-0 romp over Rhodes College tobegin the year and later in the seasonwhen she blanked the Bulldogs ofMississippi State on the road, 4-0. She

was the last remaining member from theoriginal squad when Lady Tiger soccerdebuted in 1995.

Smith finished her four-year careerat Memphis with 77 appearances. Shetallied 18 goals and 11 assists, giving her47 career points. During the season-opener against Rhodes College, sherecorded two strikes and two assists in awin and later added two more goals duringa 6-1 thrashing at Belmont.

The season started off with a bang,as the Lady Tigers began with a record of2-0. In the opener against crosstown-rivalRhodes College, Memphis rallied for a 9-0victory with six different players scoring atleast once. Freshman striker BeccaAmrozowicz was one of the six players tofind the net when she notched her first

career goal in the 49th minute off a feedfrom Smith. Two clays later in the firstmatch of the Lady Tiger Invitational,Memphis was victorious again with a 2-1overtime win over Toledo. During whatmay have been the most exciting game allyear, junior forward Tori Winslett equalizedwith a goal in the waning seconds ofregulation play to send the game into extratime. It was just over 10 minutes laterwhen Amrozowicz struck for the secondtime in three days off a corner kick fromWinslett, this time for the game winner asthe Lady Tigers season looked to be a goodone early on.

The following weeks, however, werenot kind to the Lady Tigers, as injuries tofreshman Erin Rothrock (pre-season injury)and sophomore Suzanne Williams ham-

pered the Memphis attack. The Lady Tigers then endured a

four-game losing streak which would finallycease in late September when the U of Mgrabbed a road-win over SEC opponentMississippi State. That contest featured a"hat-trick" by junior striker CandiceSpiniolas who scored the first three goalsbefore freshman phenom Amrozowiczadded the last strike in the 4-0 victory.

Memphis didn't savor victory againuntil nearly one month later when theyknocked off Belmont, 6-1, in Nashville.Smith, Spiniolas, and Winslett each scoredfor the U of M, as did freshman midfielderAlison Baker who found the net twice inthe win.

The Lady Tigers then suffered threestraight C-USA losses but managed to grab

a win when they knocked off Louisville onthe road 2-1 for their lone conferencevictory of the season. Spiniolas andAmrozowicz scored both times forMemphis, each time unassisted.

Memphis ended their season with ahard-fought 2-0 loss on the road toconference opponent DAB

The U of M did have one playerrecognized for post-season honors, however, as Amrozowicz was named tothe Conference USA all-freshman team.

Amrozowicz and her fellow LadyTiger freshman definitely left their mark, asthey accounted for 22 points (10 goals, two assists).

Memphis finished 1999 battered, yet optimistic about next season. Onlytime will tell....
