    GESTURE RECOGNITION

    Gestures are

    expressive,meaningful body

    motions, i.e., physical

    movements of the

    fingers, hands, arms,

head, face, or bodywith the intent to

    convey information or

    interact with the

    environment.

    Gesture Recognition

    WHY?

    Provides HUMAN-MACHINE INTERFACE

Public acceptanceData required is easily obtained and

    available

For National Security like ID, passwordsetc.

    Gestures can be used to:

    - Open/close application

    - Change workspaces

    Issues

Numberofcameras. How many cameras are used?If more than one, are they combined early (stereo) or

late (multi-view)? Speedandlatency. Is the system real-time (i.e., fast

enough, with low enough latency interaction)?

Structuredenvironment. Are there restrictions onthe background, the lighting, the speed of

movement, etc.? Userrequirements. Must the user wear anythingspecial (e.g., markers, gloves, long sleeves)?

Anything disallowed (e.g., glasses, beard, rings)?

Primaryfeatures. What low-level features arecomputed (edges, regions, silhouettes, moments, histograms, etc.)?

    Howitworks

Sensors placed on your body lets say

fore-arm and arm relay rotationalinformation to a base-station sensor

The position of your hand in free space

    is calculated from this data

The cursor is sent a command relative

to the movements of your hand

    Game technology

Sign language recognition Directional indication through pointing

    Control through facial gestures

    Advantages

For low security identification no co-operation

is needed as the camera can be placed like aCCTV camera.

Need not to carry any special equipments.

    Find many applications for immersing

technologies like remote controlling, robotics, gaming etc.

    Helpful for physically challenged people.

    Disadvantages

The cost of extremely accurate gesture

recognition systems is high especially ifcombining different types of cameras. This costcan be prohibitive.

When using the technology for high securityverification the techniques are extremelysusceptible to light and camera distancechanges and controlled rooms are needed.

    May not be always accurate
