1st Alumni Meet,

Bangalore Chapter11th August’19

The   Alumni   Chapter   of   IIT   Mandi   in   Bangalore   met   for   its   first   event   on   11thAugust’19 at  DROMI (DRDO Research Officers Mess And Institute),  DRDO, CV RamanNagar. The meet was organized by Chamundeswar Nadh (ME, B.Tech’15), Secretary ofAlumni Chapter, Bangalore, with the help of Mohit Malhotra (EE, B.Tech’13).

Bangalore is one of the biggest hosts of Alumni of IIT Mandi with over 100 Alumniliving and working here (>10% of   total  Alumni).  The event,  despite  its short  notice,  haswitnessed healthy participation of over 35 Alumni joining the meet. To compliment the sameProf. T. A. Gonsalves, Director, his wife Mrs. Priscilla Gonsalves, Dr. Arpan Gupta, Advisor,Alumni Affairs and Mr.Pavin Samuel, Junior Superintendent visited Bangalore from Mandi.We also had some visitors like Runa Barik who had come from Norway.

Welcome Note by the Director

The event started with a welcome note and a presentation from theDirector showing the progress that the Institute and the Campus have made overthe last few years. The images of the new facilities that have come up recentlyon the Campus have particularly caught the attention of the Alumni.

The presentation further went on talking about the latest NIRF rankings byMHRD and how the institute has fared better than a few of the old IITs in someareas. The presentation also spoke about the efforts taken up by the institute inimproving the percentage of female students.

The presentation then concluded with how Alumni can contribute back tothe institute. A few golden words said by the director goes like “If you contributeback to the institute then the institute grows with it and which in turn helps yougrow as you will have the tag of alumni of this prestigious institute.” At the end

of this presentation a felicitation ceremony was conducted where various Alumnihave presented mementos and bouquets to the guests.

A panel discussion was set up after this where all the Alumni discussed theway forward for this chapter and how Alumni can contribute back to the institute.Sahil Mutneja (CS, B.Tech’15) initiated the discussion put up his views on howAlumni can give back to the institute by participating in the campus placementsand internships. He also spoke about how Alumni can show the faculty andstudents what the industry is working on and help them in mentoring projectsrelated to the same. Reena (Ph.D’17) also spoke about how Alumni can help inskill suggestions to the students based on current industry trends. Saurabh Jain(EE, B.Tech’13) added how we should go about creating a structure for theAlumni chapter first for sustained functioning of this chapter. For this Dr.ArpanGupta shared his plans of having a Treasure and more such positions ofresponsibility in the Alumni chapter to move things forward. The group thenbroke open for lunch and continued the discussions over the same.

The session ended with a closing note of taking up mentorship of thestudents as the first engagement to work back with the institute. Dr.Arpan Guptaspoke about his plan of having a few students volunteering to contact alumni andcompile their profiles which shall be used to connect students, faculty, andAlumni to work on project mentorship. The group has also decided to meet onceagain in the coming six months.
