WELCOME TO ARTS BY THE SEA 2021!

With our 2021 theme Connect exploring the concept of the human being as afundamentally social creature, I am delighted to bring you a return to our live event format and a festival full of joyful, inspirational events to enjoy with your friends and family.

Although we are continuing to live with the threat of Covid-19 lingering much longer than hoped, all our events are adaptable to current Covid-19 safety restrictions and we are proud to be supporting the creative and cultural sector by hosting a huge complement of local and national artists, including those unable to be here last year.

It’s a privilege to be able to bring you exceptional cultural experiences and host them in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole’s beautiful public spaces, and to be invigorating our town centres with activity which supports local businesses.

A huge thanks goes out to our funders BCP Council and Arts Council England, and to our sponsor Bournemouth Town Centre BID. I would also like to thank the immensely dedicated festival team who have shown such strength, adaptability and determination to bring you a truly inspiring, diverse and enjoyable experience this year.

Andrea Francis – Festival Director

60 MILLION POSTCARDS

Page 5: 1ST OCTOBER - 3RD OCTOBER 2021

Human beings are inherently social by nature – relying on relationships and social interaction for their mental health and wellbeing. And yet, 2020 saw a major challenge to maintaining social connections.

The Covid 19 crisis required all of us to limit, and for some completely cut, face to face contact with friends and family. Within a surprisingly short period, vast swathes of the workforce adopted digital alternatives to both working and socialising, quickly adjusting to persistent zoom chats throughout the day, while considerably upping time spent across chat apps, social media and streaming platforms.

These technologies have proved a double-edged sword—allowing us to stay astonishingly connected, while simultaneously distanced—providing synthetic substitutes for direct interaction and tactile ways of being with others.

Covid 19 created a newly troubling experience of isolation for some, while compounding a pre-existing epidemic of loneliness in the UK. Age UK predicts that by 2026, there will be 2 million people over 50 in England who will often feel lonely, having a dramatic impact on their wellbeing and quality of life.

As society continues its recovery from Covid 19, the importance of reconnecting with others is ever-more apparent. Despite current challenges, visions for the future are largely optimistic, as a visceral return to collective experience sparks the imagination. There is, some claim, a second “roaring twenties” on the horizon.

Through its 2021 programme, Arts by the Sea will explore the concept of the human being as a fundamentally social creature—a tribal animal—while highlighting the importance of celebration, festivity and connecting with others.

METHOD IN THEMARCUS

Method’s unique bold and colourful style was born from graffiti roots and heavily influenced by his former career as an architectural technologist. Method was commissioned to create a piece based on the festival’s theme Connect and took inspiration from the Zoom video calls that have been so prevalent in connecting friends and families during the Covid-19 pandemic. The piece has Arts by the Sea’s signature playfulness and bright colours with a more contemporary and abstract look to the festival artwork of previous years.

BMTHGLOW BY ADRIAN FINN

This year’s Carnival at Arts By The Sea has brought together two recipients of the Open Call funding and programme of mentoring; BCP locals, the prolific UMOJA and brilliant It’s All About Culture, have been paired with the UK’s premium Carnival experts, Shademakers to create a Carnival which celebrates connection. Bournemouth is reimagined as a huge savannah, surrounded by sea in all directions. The creatures of the savannah have been living their own private lives in troupes, bands, swarms, parliaments, gaggles and flocks since time began. Sounds and gestures become ways of telling friends from foe, whilst the beat of the savannah steadily draws all animals together in a celebration of connection.

Co-presented by Arts by the Sea Festival, Pavilion Dance South West has teamed up with choreographer Grace Willow (Joy In Dance) & internationally renowned circus production company Cirque Bijou to bring you a brand new dance show.

This specially commissioned piece will feature 6 local dance artists performing with beautiful LED light-up umbrellas.

The idea for this work was conceived during national lockdowns. All those involved in this project are firm believers in the power of art & dance to uplift, entertain, inspire and delight. We are keen to explore the role dance can play in times of uncertainty. How it can lift peoples’ spirits, transport them, providing hope and escapism.

This is a celebration of how we thrive (as artists and as people) even through the strangest and hardest of times.

As the dancers illuminate the spaces around them with the mesmerising umbrellas, let’s celebrate the light in the darkness both physically and metaphorically...

Imaginative and interactive street theatre for family audiences, cheeky chap BOING is a character who makes noises but never speaks. His whole body is full of sound, literally bursting to get out, be it from his fingers or his feet. Find BOING to experience the world from his own unique perspective.

The Little Miss Majorettes may not be the best baton twirlers or marching band members, but what they lack in skill they make up with enthusiasm! Expect a comedic display of anti-climactic tricks, false starts, fumbling formations and an (almost) extravagant ending from the family friendly, quirky dance troupe, Kitsch & Sync Collective.
