    1. Description/Purpose

The intention of this course is to provide 5S instruction to new employees of Custom Profile though a selfpaced e-learning module presented during the first two weeks of orientation. It is necessary to educate newhires on application of 5S for continuous implementation and successful sustainability. This course will allownew employees to discover how 5S impacts profit, lead-time, inventory, quality, and customer service.

Given the timeframe of one hour, this course is not intended to provide in-depth training for 5S principles, butrather provide the foundational skills and information for performing 5S events with an experienced team.

    2. Target Audience

This course is designed to provide practical knowledge of 5S principles to new employees to maintain andimprove factory operations within Custom Profile, Inc.

    The target audience includes:

Newly hired managers, engineers, supervisors, set up operators, production, maintenance andsupport staff that will be working on the extrusion production floor.

    3. Course Design

    3.1 Course Learning Objectives

After completing the self paced e-learning course, a new employee at Custom Profile will be able to:

List and define all 5S principles with 100% accuracy.

Identify 80% of the 5S challenges in a given work area. Apply 5S principles in a given work area 80% of the time as measured through audits. Sustain 5S principles in a given work area 100% of the time as measured through audits. Describe the importance of personal responsibility in the 5S process with 100% accuracy. Conclude how 5S can improve the workplace and the company's results as a whole.

    3.1.1 Example Module Objectives 5S - Sort

After completing the 5S Sort Module, a new employee at Custom Profile will be able to:

Define all 5S Sort principles with 100% accuracy Identify 80% of the 5S Sort challenges in a given work area.

Apply 5S Sort principals in a given work area with 80% accuracy. Complete a knowledge check and review with a minimum score of 80%.

    3.2 Instructional Approach

Instructional approaches used in this course include:

Sections and tables of contents Opportunities for learners to self-assess and self-correct Scenarios Simulations/Games

    3.3 Instructional Strategies

    CognitiveStrategies

Self-check and practice questions help learners assess their understanding andcorrect misconceptions and errors.

Address multiple senses using audio and visual stimuli Connecting new information to prior knowledge Content chunking for delivery efficiency. Using real-life applications of course material.

    BehavioralStrategies

Providing positive reinforcement through audio and visual responses. Providing reinforcement of principles through post tests.

    MotivationalPrinciples

    1

Build on anticipated outcomes by linking learning to established motivations. Use an appealing and relevant context Have the user perform authentic multistep tasks Provide intrinsic feedback by building scenarios where the success of the

learners action is obvious and inseparable from the activity

Allowing learner to make mistakes and then discover the correct answer toallow learners to adjust their thinking.

    3.4 Content Requirements

This course is intended to satisfy a deficiency in instruction for new employees that hinders sustainability of 5Sstandards within the company. Presently, 5S training is not administered to new employees until much later intheir tenure, if at all, resulting in problems with sustainability of the program.

Content for the course was initially created with PowerPoint by a SME within the management staff of theproduction employees but was never implemented. The original delivery method was intended to be instructor

led, but due to time and resource restraints the content will be redesigned into self paced e-learning course tobe delivered during initial orientation of the employee.

    3.5 Scope and Sequence

The course will begin with a title screen, introducing the course title and displaying a menu in which eachcomponent can be navigated to. Components of the course include:

o A e-learning course tutorialo Introductiono Help Screeno Modules

The tutorial component explains the navigation buttons and any skills required to complete the course.

The Introduction component will illustrate the objectives of the course in a scenario based presentation. All screens will contain links to a help section with navigation information and a means of contacting

resources with further questions/issues and the Help Desk for technical information. After the Introduction, the modules 1 will be presented and will allow the learner to advance linearly though

the course. Each module builds upon the last, requiring the learner to move through the modulessequentially.

The post test will complete the sequence, providing final assessment of learning. The results will beemailed to Human Resources to be entered into ERP software.

    Module Flow

    3.6 Evaluation Approach

The evaluation strategy for this course is as follows:

Level 1: Learners will be asked to evaluate the course in the following areas at the end of the module togauge reactions:

The relevance of the objectives. The ability of the course to maintain interest. The amount and appropriateness of interactive exercises. The ease of navigation. The perceivedvalue and transferability to the workplace.

Level 2: Performance evaluations will be administered throughout the course, requiring the learners todemonstrate their level of knowledge in each module. To measure learning, participants will complete a pre-test and post-test.

Level 3: At the learners 90 day review, they will be assessed with an audit of their work area and a writtenmultiple choice quiz to gauge whether or not any of the new knowledge and skills were retained andtransferred back on the job.

Level 4: At this time, an individual ROI analysis will not be singularly performed for this course. An overallevaluation of the all 5S training events for the entire company will be analyzed as a whole.

Defining what is needed in a work area is not something that can be doneeffectively by one person working alone; use a team representing all that work in the area.
