the cup about one-third of the way down. 4. Cover the seeds with soil. 5. Lightly moisten the soil with water. 6. Over the next few days, add more water to

From Seed to Plant Oral Language Dialogue

From Seed to lant Jason and Max are talking about something they learned in class. Act out the parts with a partner. Then switch roles and act them out again.

Jason: Did you know that a plant begins as a seed?

Max: Yes, and seeds come rom plants.

Jason: That’s right. Seeds grow inside a pod or a ruit. When the pod

breaks open the seeds scatter.

Max: Those seeds will become new plants.

Jason: Once a seed is planted in the ground, it needs water. The water

will soak the seed and soften its seed coat.

Max: The sun warms the seed, and the plant starts to grow. First, a root

will grow down into the ground.

Jason: Then a shoot will grow up

out o the ground. The shoot

will grow into a plant.

Max: And be ore long that plant

will grow seeds. The process

will start all over again!

From Seed to Plant Selection Summary

From Seed to lant A seed begins to grow when a grain of pollen from

a flower is moved to the stigma. This is called

pollination. Wind birds bees and other insects help

pollinate. Once a plant is pollinated the seeds begin

to grow.

As the seeds grow larger a fruit or pod forms

around them. The fruit or pod helps protect the seeds.

When the fruit or pod is ripe it will break open. Now

the seeds are ready to become plants.

Wind water and animals help scatter the seeds.

Once a seed is planted it needs water to begin to grow.

Rain will soak the seed. This allows the seed coat to

soften. As the sun warms the earth the seed coat will

break open and the seed will begin to grow.

First a root grows down into the earth.

Then a shoot grows up out of the ground.

The shoot will sprout leaves and grow into a

plant. Once the plant is fully grown it will

form flower buds. Soon the process of a seed

becoming a plant will begin again!

Sea Turtles

Sea turtles have lived on Earth for a long time. They spend 12

most of their lives in the ocean. However, they hatch from eggs 24

in nests that are dug in the sand. 32

Long Beach, North Carolina, is an important place for sea 42

turtles. They need a clean place to lay their eggs. Without 53

beaches, sea turtles cannot survive. 58

A group of adults and kids wanted to protect the turtles. They 70

formed a turtle patrol. This patrol helps the turtle eggs survive 81

until they hatch. The patrol puts up signs. The signs say, “Do Not 94

Disturb. A Sea Turtle Nest Is Here.” 101

After about two months, it is time for the eggs to hatch. It 114

takes a couple of days for the babies to dig out of the nests. 128

During this time, the patrol keeps people away. 136

The baby turtles leave their nests, at night. They look for the 148

place with the most light. The ocean and sky have the most light. 161

A patrol member may shine a flashlight at the shore to help 173

turtles find the water. 177

With the help of the patrol, the tiny turtles make it to the sea. 191

In about twenty years, the female turtles come back. They return 202

to lay their own eggs in the sand. 210
