The varsity team knew they had to make some more readjustments if they wanted to keep their lead. “We needed to refresh our memories and go over what we wanted and needed to,” said Assistant Coach Chris Guptill. The second half was big for both Beyer and Davis. Beyer, after trailing the Spartans for most of the game, were only three points behind Davis with about 38 seconds left in the game. “We were worried,” said Guptill, “In a one possession game you have no idea what is going to happen because it is so unpredictable.” The amount of time was a factor against the Patriots and the Spartans edged out Beyer 58-52. “We did very well,” said Guptill, “We held Lightfoot and Garbez to bad shooting nights with great defending.” Garbez was held to only 17 points that night as Lightfoot only made one three point shot out of eight tries. Castaneda ended up putting up 18 as both Ryan Michael and Jones put up 12 points. “Castenada is probably our most dangerous player right now,” said Guptill, “He has put up great numbers in the past couple of games.” Another big thing they did was that they attacked the 1-3-1 zone defense whcih had confused teams before but not the Spartans. “We had to try something new but the execution went great,” said Guptill. The players were happy about this victory against their cross town rivals. “We played as a team with a few mistakes in the game but we came through in the end,” said Vega. The following week the Spartans had to go up against Marcus Bell and the Enochs Eagles in a high impact game “We had to play our best game,” said Guptill, “It was do or die.” The game was extremely shaky as the Spartans trailed by 12 at half. “We couldn’t make any more mistakes and needed to be more aggressive,” said Guptill In the second half, the Spartans showed life as the Eagles began to struggle. A series of shots made by Ryan Michael and Weston Toste brought them within seven points of getting the lead they hadn’t had all night. Time was a factor though for Davis as the game ended a 57-50 loss for Davis. “We missed our chance to be MMC champs,” said Guptill, “It was very disappointing” The next game the Spartans went to Modesto High to avenge a defeat to Enochs and keep their playoff hopes alive. The game ended up being a blow out with Davis winning 74-35. With elimination of being MMC champs the team remains motivated, looking for a playoff birth. “After losing our chances at being MMC champs we will go after the playoff spot,” said Guptill, “Playoffs are our motivating factor.
