There are two truths about the IPFW men’s basketball 2003–04season. The numbers are deceiving. And this is truly a resilientgroup of individuals. They endured a 3-25 season that saw the

loss of three starters by January, forcing underclassmen into action. While no one wants to see 3-25, opposing teams had to work hard forthat “W” — especially at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, where all but one home game went down to the final minute beforebeing decided.

As a wise man once said, “What does not kill you makes youstronger.” With a nucleus of young, talented players and an All-American candidate, IPFW is ready to turn it around in 2004–05.

Leading the charge for the Donswill be All-American candidate, senior center David Simon(6′10″/Vernon Hills, Ill.), whowill be overcoming somechallenges of his own. Simon, who declared himself eligiblefor last year’s NBA draft, suffered a knee injury at theNBA Prospects Camp and willbe brought along slowly at thebeginning of the year. (Hepulled his name out of the draftprior to the deadline.)

Simon has been selected byLindy’s Pre-Season Annual asthe Division I Independent

Player of the year. Last season, cbssportsline.com rated Simon as thesecond best center in the nation, trailing only Emeka Okafor of UConn. He was also rated as the seventh best overall player in the nation.Pretty lofty accolades for a player most people have never seen, buthis 18 points per game and 9.8 boards per contest caught the eyes ofsome NBA scouts who project him as a possible first-round pick inthe 2005 draft.

“You have to look at both sides of the coin when it comes to Dave’sinjury,” IPFW head men’s basketball coachDoug Noll said. “It is unfortunate that ithappened, and he’ll be slowed the first partof the season. But on the flip side, it isfortunate for Dave that it didn’t happenduring the first part of this season, becausehe would have lost his entire senior year.”

“The sky is the limit with Dave,” Noll added.“He can be as good as he wants to be. Hisconfidence level has soared, being able tocompete with the guys at the NBA Pre-Draftcamp. That will help him a lot this year.”

Also helping Simon out will be an improvedperimeter shooting game. Taking some heat

off of Simon on the inside will be improved shooting from sophomorepoint guard Beau Bauer (6′3″/Walton, Ind.) and freshman red-shirtPete Campbell (6′7″/forward/Muncie, Ind.).

Bauer, who started 27 of 28 games last season as a true freshman, has worked hard to improve his outside shooting (34 percent-31percent from behind the arc). Campbell has a smooth stroke and is apure scoring threat. “Pete Campbell can really shoot it,” Noll said. “Ifnot Beau, I think Pete will lead us in three-point shooting. He’s just anexceptional talent.”

Bauer, a team co-captain as a sophomore, will most likely start at the point, but will seesome time at the shooting guard position.

The two guard position will most likely bemanned by sophomore red-shirt QuintinCarouthers (6′4″/Flint, Mich.) at thebeginning of the year, until Simon worksback into game shape. Carouthers is anathletic slasher who can get to the hoop. Hewas lost for the season after suffering ashoulder injury against Bowling Green StateUniversity. “He’s also improved his jump shotand is much stronger that he was last year,”Noll stated. “I think he is ready to take hisgame to another level.”

2004–2005 IPFW MASTODONS BASKETBALL 8

Season Outlook

Page 11: 2004-05 IPFW Men's Basketball Media Guide

When Carouthers moves into the three spot, Noll has the versatility tomove Bauer to the two and bring in sophomore Byron Malone (6′0″/Indianapolis, Ind.) to the point. “Byron brings us some tough, hard-nosed basketball,” the coach said. Malone was second on the team inassists in 2003–04 and gained valuable experience playing wellagainst teams like Purdue and Air Force.

Another player sure to be in theguard rotation is ByronMalone’s brother Jason. JasonMalone (6′3″/freshman/Indianapolis, Ind.) can playeither the one, two, or the three.“Jason is a mid-major plus typeplayer,” according to Noll. “Theonly thing he is lacking at thispoint is experience, because hemakes great decisions, issmooth with the basketball, andhe’s physical. I think he is goingto play a lot of minutes for usthis year.

Another player expected to log a lot of court time is forward QuintinButler (6′7″/junior/Greenwood, S.C.). The former “Mr. Basketball” inSouth Carolina transferred to IPFW from Wabash Valley Junior Collegein Illinois, where he was an All-Conference performer. Butler averaged9.6 points per game and hauled down 8.2 rebounds per contest forthe Warriors. He’ll bring an added toughness to the Mastodons’interior. “He’s not exceptionally big,” Noll said. “But he’s got a ‘hard-hat’ mentality. He plays with a passion! He’s not an ‘I’ guy…he’s allabout the team, and we are really looking for him to give us somequality minutes.”

Also expected to see time atthe four (and the three) willbe sophomore defensivestandout Justin Hawkins(6′7″/Garrett, Ind.). Hawkinswas routinely called upon toshut down the opposition’stop scoring threat, and he didhis job well as a freshman.“Hawk has put on moremuscle,” according to Noll.“He’s figured out over thesummer that he needs to bea little more aggressive onoffense. He’s a blue-collarworker, and very physicalinside.”

A couple of freshmen couldalso manage some minuteson the interior. Red-shirtCharles Campbell (6′10″/

Chicago, Ill.), a good leaper, can determine how much he plays byhis performance early. He will be looked upon to possibly fillsome of Simon’s minutes at the center spot.

Zeljko Egeric (6′10″/Split, Croatia) has good size, can shoot, dribble, and pass. He’s fundamentally very sound. Noll describeshim as “A great passer, and a player who really understands howto play.”

IPFW’s success in the upcoming season will greatly depend onhow the younger players learned their lessons from last year. They need to get healthy and stay that way, because once again, they will have a tough Independent schedule featuring nine teamsthat either made the NCAA or NIT tournaments.

With last year in their rear view mirror, the Mastodons are hungryfor the new year to begin.

C oach Doug Noll begins his sixth season atIPFW and third as a full-fledged Division Iprogram, knowing what a fine line there is

between winning and losing at the highest level.Noll, whose Mastodons finished the season 3-25,saw teams such as 27th-ranked Kent State hit ahalf-court shot to win by one, Oregon State of thePac-10 win by two, and 17th-ranked Purdue fightfor their lives to lead by one at half and win by 11over their satellite campus.

Noll also saw 10 other games come down to the last minutewith three buzzer beaters against his team, and yet hecontinues to believe in the course of action IPFW is taking andcontinues to persevere with a positive attitude, knowing that aconference affiliation is on the horizon.

“When any team loses 60 percent of its offense, there will bestruggles,” Noll said. “But I am grateful to the kids who stayedthe course and worked extremely hard to finish out the secondhalf of the year. I think our young kids definitely have gained a

plethora of knowledge and experience as most ofthem went from role players to impact players.”

This year will be different as senior David Simonwill lead a group of young and somewhatexperienced talent with another very challengingschedule. The Dons visit Notre Dame, Xavier,Marquette, and Saint Louis, among many otherquality teams, and have a home stand against AirForce, Utah State, Middle Tennessee State, and

Maine. Noll has also added the former Mr. Basketball of SouthCarolina, 6′7″ power forward Quintin Butler, as the otherupperclassman, but the rest of the young guns for IPFW willcontinue to work to gain more experience each day.

At Spring Arbor University, Noll’s teams averaged more than 21wins per year during a six-year span. Under his leadership,Spring Arbor set a record for wins in a season (29) and winningpercentage (.820) andwas nationally rankedat #2 in preseason NAIADivision II polls.

One of Spring Arbor’swinningest coaches, with a record of 131-108, Noll was twiceselected as theWolverine-HoosierConference Coach ofthe Year (1993–97). His1997 team finished theseason ranked fourth inthe nation.

Before moving to Spring Arbor, Noll was the assistant coach atGrace College. From 1990 to 1992, he helped transform a 10-22team into one that compiled a record of 49-17. In the 1991–92season, Grace posted a mark of 32-5, winning the first-everNAIA Division II National Championship.

Coach Noll was also a successful player on the court. Hetransferred to Grace College from the University of Wyoming. AtGrace, he was tabbed as a two-time NAIA All-American. In onlytwo seasons with the Lancers, he poured in 2,250 points, whichranks him fourth All-Time. Between 1976 and 1978, he steppedup to the free-throw line more often than any other collegeplayer in the country. He also knocked down more foul shots

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR MARK POPE

Mark Pope was named IPFW’s director of athletics in July 2001 as the university wastransitioning from NCAA Division II to Division I. That transition was completed on Sept. 1, 2002,as IPFW earned NCAA Division I certification — on schedule and on budget.

Since that initial year, Pope has set about transforming IPFW Athletics into a program worthy ofthe name “Division I.” Among his accomplishments are the following:

t The annual IPFW Soccer Showcase was reorganized, drawing 11,500 fans in 2003 and15,000 fans in 2004

t Men’s basketball attendance increased tenfold from 2000, including the highestpercentage increase of all Division I institutions in 2003–2004

t Women’s volleyball attendance tripled from 2002 to 2003t Men’s volleyball attendance was third nationally in 2004t Contributions to Athletics have increased by 50 percent from 2001 to 2003t The Gates Center and baseball field have undergone significant renovationst Men’s and women’s golf were added as sponsored sportst In cooperation with the IPFW Alumni and Student Government Associations, IPFW’s

Homecoming tradition was createdt The IPFW Stomp Band was organized

Despite these successes, Pope has always focused on the student component of the IPFWstudent-athlete. Last year Pope’s departmental goal of a 3.0 grade-point average was realized, asIPFW student-athletes achieved a 3.01 GPA. The IPFW softball, tennis, cross country, and trackteams have earned All-Academic honors from their respective associations. IPFW Athleticsgraduates its student-athletes at a rate that is double that of the IPFW all-campus rate.

Pope holds a B.A. from Purdue University and a J.D. from Indiana University. He has been amember of the Bar of the state of Indiana for 27 years. Pope and his wife, Julie, are the proudparents of two sons, Brent and Brad.

Born separately, decades apart, and conjoined in 1964 along the banks of the St. Joseph River,Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne offers an outstanding education at a great value. Asnortheast Indiana’s premier public university, IPFW is committed to enhancing access to personalized,high-quality learning. The university offers more than 180 degree options for undergraduate andgraduate programs, taught by distinguished professors. It’s not unusual to turn on a televisiondocumentary and see a member of IPFW’s faculty as the “resident expert” on topics ranging fromdinosaurs to Middle East politics.

IPFW continues to grow, both in numbers of students and in facilities. The addition ofmore than a dozen new soccer fields across the St. Joseph River from the main campushas greatly increased athletic opportunities for students as well as for members of thecommunity. IPFW has also opened Student Housing this year, offering a more traditionaluniversity experience to full-time students. Plans for a new music building and healtheducation building are in the works, and fundraising efforts have already begun.

IPFW’s academic organization is made up of 10 major units, which include the schoolsof Business and Management Sciences; Education; Health Sciences; Arts and Sciences;Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science; and Visual and Performing Arts. It also

includes the divisions of Continuing Studies, Labor Studies, Public and Environmental Affairs, andOrganizational Leadership and Supervision.

There are dozens of student organizations on IPFW’s campus. Groups range from departmentalorganizations, honorary societies, religious organizations, social Greek fraternities and sororities, andspecial interest groups. There are also several intramural sports groups.

IPFW receives its accreditation from the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the NorthCentral Association of Colleges and Schools.

Fort Wayne began as an outpost on the western frontier more than 200 years ago. It gained its nickname, the “Summit City,” by being the highest place between the Maumee and Wabash river basins.

Now with a population in excess of 200,000 people, it is the second largest city in Indiana. As such, itoffers its citizenry a wide variety of things to do, see, and appreciate. For the sports minded, there aretwo professional sports teams based here: the United Hockey League’s Fort Wayne Komets and theMidwest League for Single A Baseball’s Fort Wayne Wizards, whose parent club is the San Diego Padres.Fort Wayne holds several places in sports history. It is the birthplace of the National BasketballAssociation and the home of the Daisy’s, one of five teams in the first professional women’s baseballleague. Fort Wayne also has the honor of holding the first night baseballgame under lights.

Fort those who are interested in theperforming arts, the Summit City offersvenues such as the Fort WaynePhilharmonic, Fort Wayne Ballet, the CivicTheatre, Artlink, Fort Wayne Dance Collective, and Fort Wayne Youtheatre.

Some little known trivia about Fort Wayne:the inventor of the television Philo T.Farnsworth was born here as was fashion

designer Bill Blass. Fort Wayne is the home of thewashing machine, baking powder, parking meters, magnetic wire, streetlights, and gas pumps.
