Gordon Stubblefield begins his first season as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Park University. Stubblefield played one season under cur-rent Park Head Coach Jason Kline at Indiana

Tech University in 1998-99, earning All-America honors. A 1999 graduate of Indiana Tech with a bachelor’s degree in business management, Stubblefield currently works for the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependants.

Men’s Basketball

Under the direction of first-year head coach Jason Kline, the Park University men’s basketball program is ready to embark on a new era as it enters the 2005-06 season. Following the retirement of Park’s all-time wins leader Claude English after 13 standout seasons, Kline was named his successor on June 2, 2005. Kline brings a wealth of coaching experience to the Pirates, including leading his 2004-05 Indiana Tech University squad to a school record 29-8 record and a second-straight berth in the NAIA Division II National Tournament. Kline’s 2005-06 Pirate squad features eight returning letterwinners who will be counted upon to continue the tradition of hard-working basketball at Park. “For our program to be successful this upcoming season, the team is going to have to buy into playing great defense, rebounding and running the break,” said Kline. “We want our defensive pressure to create some easy opportunities for us on the offensive end. To become a good defensive team, it doesn’t take a lot of skill, but takes a huge heart.” Highlighting the returnees is the senior trio of Corey Gupton, Marcus Simms and Donovan Thompson. A 6-7, forward, Gupton averaged 7.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per game during the 2003-04 campaign before sitting out last season with a foot injury. The Ypsilanti, Mich., native started 14 of 30 games during his junior season. Simms, a native of Kansas City, Mo., returns to run the point guard position for the Pirates after starting 22 games last year, averaging 3.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. Thompson (Nassau, Bahamas), who was a reserve guard for most of the 2004-05 season, made the most of his first career start in the last game of the year against 20th-ranked Brescia University, scoring a career-high 17 points, along with three rebounds, three steals and three assists. According to Kline, these three seniors will be integral to the team’s ability to work together. “One thing I want our players to understand is that it is very tough to guard five players compared to one,” Kline said. “We want to become a cohesive unit with great team chemistry.” Junior Frank Baptiste (Castries, St. Lucia), sophomore Admir Aljic (Tuzla, Bosnia), sophomore Ismar Osmanovic (Sarajevo, Bosnia) and sophomore Ben Wallis (Kansas City, Mo.) all return and are expected to be contributors inside for the Pirates, while sophomore Donovan Williams (Columbus, Ga.) returns on the perimeter. In addition to the returnees, Kline has brought in a talented group of transfers who will all be counted on to play important roles in their first season with the Pirates. Junior T.J. Wesley (Kansas City, Mo.), junior Manny Segura and sophomore Chris Jones (Springfield, Ohio) will make immediate impacts at the guard positions, while junior Lee Dixon (Belton, Mo.) and sophomore Greg Troupe (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) will contend for minutes at forward. “I would like our players to carry on the tradition of competing at a high level in the classroom, on the floor and later on in life,” Kline said. “It makes a coach proud when an outside source labels your team as a hard-working group that plays unselfishly.” As in years past, the 2005-06 schedule will be a challenging one for the Pirates, as it features perennial powers McKendree College, Oklahoma Christian University, Mountain State University, rival William Jewell College and defending NAIA Division I National Champion John Brown University.

Season Preview Jason Kline-- Head Coach-- First Season

Jason Kline enters his first season as the head men’s basketball coach at Park University.

Kline comes to Park after seven successful seasons at Indiana Tech University in Fort Wayne, Ind., where he led the Warriors to a

140-84 record during his tenure. Last season, he guided Indiana Tech to a school record 29 wins (eight losses) and the school’s second straight NAIA Division II National Tournament appearance, advancing to the Elite Eight. Over the last three seasons, Kline’s teams at Indiana Tech averaged over 26 wins per year. In each of the last four seasons, his teams finished the regular season in the top 35 of the final NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball ratings, including a ranking of eighth in 2003-04 and 15th last season. Academically, Kline’s players have a graduation rate of 91.4 percent. Kline, who was named the WHAC (Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference) Coach of the Year in 2003-04, led Indiana Tech to a regu-lar season conference title in 2003-04 and to the WHAC Tournament Championship last season. Individually, Kline’s players accumulated a multitude of honors. Ten stu-dent-athletes have been named NAIA All-America Scholar Athletes under Kline, while nine have earned athletic All-America honors. Twenty-nine players have been tabbed Academic All-WHAC honorees, along with 14 athletic All-WHAC performers. In addition, Kline has had two recipients of the NAIA Champions of Character Award. Kline started his coaching career as an assistant at Indiana Tech from 1993-95, where he earned his undergraduate degree in business administra-tion in 1994. Kline then spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Kansas Wesleyan University, which is where he completed his M.B.A. in 1998. Kline and his wife, Jolina, have two sons, Jacob and Jackson.

-- Assistant Coach-- Fourth Season Antowin Edwards enters his fourth season as an assistant coach for the men’s basketball program at Park University. A four-year letterwinner for the Pirates from 1992-96, Edwards works at Park Hill High

School as a peer mediator and also serves as an assistant coach for the boy’s basketball team. A native of Austin, Texas, Edwards earned his bachelor’s degree from Park in 1997.

Women’s Basketball

With a mix of seven returners and eight newcomers, the Park University women’s basketball team has high hopes entering the 2005-06 season. Following a 13-15 performance last season, Head Coach Joe C. Meriweather’s squad will look to improve upon that record this season and contend for a birth in the NAIA National Tournament March 15-21 in Jackson, Tenn. Leading the push for a national tournament bid is an experienced and seasoned group of four seniors, including Tiffany Alexander (Detroit, Mich.), Katie Cummings (St. Joseph, Mo.), LaTasha Johnson (Miami, Fla.) and Fareeda Washington (Kansas City, Kan.). “The four seniors will be counted on a great deal to provide leadership for this team,” Meriweather said. “Their take-charge attitudes will have an impact on every game and help us reach the goals we want to achieve.” Alexander returns to handle point guard duties in 2005-06 after averaging 9.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game last season. Washington, who started 15 games and averaged 4.9 points per game in 2004-05, will provide depth at both guard positions. In the post, Cummings and Johnson were the Pirates top two scorers and rebounders last season. Cummings averaged 12.0 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, while Johnson compiled 14.7 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Sophomore Cherrale Ricks (Lawrence, Kan.) provides Park with a third option inside as she ranked third on the team in scoring and rebounding last season with 10.6 points and 6.9 rebounds per game as a freshman. Sophomore Rachel Bankhead (Kansas City, Mo.) is back as the Pirates’ top three-point threat, hitting a team-high 58 three-pointers (35.8 percent) last season. Sophomore guard Kayla Cheeney (Ludlow, Mo.) rounds out Park’s returners. Pacing a group of talented newcomers are the trio of junior Sarah Hopkins (Essex, England), sophomore Jessica Stanley (Stockton, Mo.) and freshman Meghan Cummings (St. Joseph, Mo.). “The newcomers will be counted upon heavily to make an impact on the court,” Meriweather said. “We have some versatile players in this group who will be able to contribute on both ends of the floor.” Other newcomers include juniors Jovan Frazer (Olathe, Kan.), Jenica Stephens (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands), sophomore Elizabeth Hinkle (Kansas City, MO.), freshman Priscilla Davis (Belton, Mo.) and freshman Lavinia Vaitai (Euless, Texas).

Season Preview

Senior Fareeda Washington started 15 games for the Pirates last season, averaging 4.9 points per game.
