2006 – 2007 Annual Report Vol. VIII Winter 2008

From the President’s Desk

The beginning months of any new year is a time of taking stock ofwhere we’ve been and where we’re headed. So much of what weexperienced as an Agency dedicated to the shelter and care of displacedyouth, was extraordinarily positive. Our celebration of the young menand women graduating from our Program and entering college wasjoyfully extended with a reception in their honor, and the completion ofour second DVD entitled “Living the Legacy,” in which their stories aretold.” Joseph, Ashley, Calden, Champaine, and Sir Quann give movingaccounts of the difference that our Program and Staff has made in eachof their lives. “Living the Legacy” is a must-see documentary that isavailable to you at no charge.

Inside this Annual Report issue of Benevolence, we applaud the individuals, families, churches, businesses, organizations, and foundations that made our mission possible. Without the commitmentof our donors, the shelter and care that we provide to at-risk youth would cease. Many of the servicesthat prove effective in rebuilding young lives would simply have to be eliminated. Here is a thumbnailsketch of other highlights from our 2006-07 fiscal year:

A new nameOur new doing-business name, BCS YES! Youth Empowered to Succeed was approved by the Board ofDirectors and became effective in July, 2007. We believe the new designation honors the Agency’shistory that began in 1879 as the Baptist Orphanage of Philadelphia, highlights our present-day care ofadolescents and teens ages 13-18, and reflects our legal status as a non-profit residential services Agencythat accepts at-risk youth regardless of race, religion, national origin, or gender.

The initials B.C.S. connects us to our heritage as Baptist Children’s Services. The word YES! (includingthe exclamation point!) emphatically affirms our commitment to provide the best care possible to theyoung people we serve. Youth Empowered to Succeed is our signature suite of enrichment programsthat produce remarkable results; programs like academic tutoring, basic life skills, computer literacy, and health, fitness and nutrition. The full name is important because it carries the story of our successwith at-risk youth into the New Year.

An unprecedented giftOur pulse quickened in fiscal year 2007 when we received an anonymous gift of $1,000,000 – the giftthat created the BCS YES! Angel Fund. According to all available records, the Angel Fund gift was thefirst of its kind and magnitude in the Agency’s 128-year history. The Angel Fund’s principal gift isforever restricted, but its income is dedicated to reducing and ultimately eliminating the menacingfunding gap, now and in the future.

A challenge and opportunityBCS YES! has an exciting challenge in the New Year – that of ensuring the continuity of shelter todisplaced youth. We are on the move into new, but uncharted waters to raise $3 million dollars over thecourse of the next 3 years. During this time, we will be reaching out to the broadest community possibleto meet this challenge. The Angel Fund Matching Gift Campaign will give donors the opportunity tojoin with us and make a gift that will make a lasting difference in the lives of thousands of youth insoutheastern Pennsylvania. Contributions to the Angel Fund will receive a $1 for $2 match and startworking immediately to provide critically-needed services for homeless youth.

New friends making a differenceReaching our goals requires BCS YES! to make new friends and make old friends new again. We areencouraged to have recruited dozens of community leaders to the Angel Fund Matching Gift Committeeto help us reach the $3 million dollar goal. My personal note of thanks is extended to every committeevolunteer and to every one of our 2007 donors. I hope that you will continue to help BCS YES! build itslegacy of empowering at-risk youth to succeed. Through the Angel Fund, your charitable dollars willhave a far-reaching life-changing impact on homeless, vulnerable youngsters. We are grateful foryour boundless support.

Blessings and peace,Ken Campbell

Special Recognition to Mr. Lawrence Borger on hisappointment to the BCS YES! Board of Directors;

to Rev. Charles W. Quann on his appointment as VicePresident effective July, 2007; and to Rev. Ernest R.Flores on the Judson Press publication of his book

“Tempted to Leave the Cross.”

All hearts were encouraged. Generous contributions were made by [Mrs. Griffith] and Mrs. MargaretS. Foster as a memorial to her departed husband. The third cottage [of the Baptist Orphanage] wasprovided for by funds raised through The National Baptists by “Aunt Mena,” and by the childrenand workers in the Baptist Sunday-schools of the State [March 11, 1885].

Excerpt from Benjamin Griffith – Biographical sketches, pg. 236Edited by Charles H. Banes, A.M. (circa 1920)

Our hearts continue to be encouraged – and grateful – as the generous financial and in-kind support ofChurches and Church Organizations honor our heritage and affirm our work of providing shelter and careto youngsters in need. On behalf of the more than 500 youths served in 2007, we extend our sincere thanksfor your sacrificial giving.

Financials &Fundraising activities and voluntary contributions help to pay a portion of critically-needed, unfunded annual expenses. Government revenues andfundraising dollars fund approximately 86% of the cost of providing quality, holistic care to today’s homeless youth. Despite this generous support, maintaining quality care will require $400,000 in supplemental income for the June 2008 fiscal year under current assumptions. The Angel Fundprovides a permanent way to bridge the funding gap and ensure that the BCS YES! legacy as a sanctuary and refuge for youth in need continues foryears to come. This is the legacy.

Major gifts lay the foundation for new and improved residential programs designed to benefit the complex needs of dependent, neglectedyouth. Services such as psychological counseling, academic tutoring, mentoring and group discussions, or programs such as health, fitness, and nutrition, substance abuse prevention, job skills training and education enrichment, would be severely curtailed without gifts, grants, and sponsorships at significant levels. Financial support by generous benefactors makes transforming young lives a successful endeavorfor BCS YES! We are indeed grateful.

Charitable GivingThe BCS YES! mission is to provide quality care to youth. We are committed to instill a sense ofresponsibility, accountability, and morals in the youth we serve. The combined financial resources ofa charitable community strengthens each of the on-going services we provide, supports our trained, professional staff that works diligently to bring about life-transforming results, and provides evidence topublic officials and grant-makers that people really do care about less fortunate members of society.Thank you, friends, for your meaningful, generous contributions to BCS YES!

Executive Director’sMessageAs I write to you it would be the simplest ofobservation that these are not the best of times. The fortunes of many are at stake. There is agrowing uncertainty about the future of ourbeloved country. Its financial health is beingchallenged. The foremost question, in so manyminds, is what do we do to preserve the econom-ic freedom that we have.

Not only is the financial health at risk, so is oursociety. There are victims everywhere. You seethem lying by the sidewalks of our streets. Youhear of the rising incidents of crime and vio-lence. These are not the subjects that we like todwell upon. We would just as soon talk aboutthe weather. That is something that none of uscan do anything about. Something will be doneabout our financial crisis. Every effort will bemade to address the needs of the impoverished.

What of the real victims. The children who, inspite of the environment in which they live, riseabove it. How proud we were of those sevengraduates who were honored for their academicachievement on the occasion of our AnnualMeeting. They were the product of somethingbeing done about their situation. Their successcan be attributed to the effort of BaptistChildren’s Services.

Every day there are 80 children in residence inour Group Homes and Shelters. They are beingchallenged to achieve goals beyond their ownexpectations. You have a real part in theirgrowth and achievement as you support thework of this Agency. How can we not help butrespond to the crises in the lives of these youngpersons? Like you, I am being bombarded withall sorts of requests for financial contributions.Giving to Baptist Children’s Services is makingan investment in the lives of these young peoplewho have come into our care.

It was Our Lord who has been so often quoted byme, “Suffer the little children to come unto meand forbid them not for such is the Kingdom ofHeaven.” If you find it difficult to hear mywords, then listen to His. May God put it intoyour hearts to relieve the crisis in the lives ofthese young people.

7BCS YES! Rebuilding Young Lives

Meeting the Challengewith William H. Gray III

Delivering a persuasive message on the history, virtue, and future of BCS YES! seven-termformer US Congressman William H. Gray IIIunveiled the Angel Fund Matching Gift Challengewith power, grace and authority. As the keynotespeaker of the Annual Meeting on June 25, 2007,“Bill” Gray touched the hearts and minds ofresidents, staff and guests as we shared arelaxing and informative summer evening atthe Inn at Valley Forge’s Grand Ballroom. The following key excerpts are taken fromMr. Gray’s solicitous, often humorous remarks.

Iam delighted to join you and share with youas you come to celebrate this great mission andthe young people who have gone through its

programs and tocommit yourselvesto the challenge ofthe future. I amreminded of theRoman god Januswho was portrayed with two faces, one looking backand the other looking forward. In fact, our monthof January comes from this ancient Roman deity. So we come together looking back to that coldwinter in 1873 when a little girl died and leftninety-cents which led to the Baptist Orphanageof Philadelphia.

Down through the years the mission has been tohelp – no, that word is too mild, – the missionhas been to rescue needy children and youth byproviding shelter, nourishment, education, andabove all, love. It wasn’t always easy; it never iseasy to have a mission that takes over a hundredtwenty plus years. An earlier generation of menand women just like us, supported this mission tomake sure that thousands of children and youthcould get a chance to start life and to make acontribution, and I suspect that as they did, therewas something else behind their goodwill.

They remembered “suffer the little children to comeunto me.” They remembered the great test that“inasmuch as you did it unto the least of these, youdid it unto me.” They were motivated to dig deeplyand reach out and help young people in need, andbecause of the Christian love demonstrated throughgifts to BCS, thousands can agree with one formerresident, Christine Marziale, who said “because Ilived at Baptist Children’s Services, I was able tochange my life.”

Last year BCS housed almost 500 young people likeChristine, providing counseling, academic tutoring,

after-school employment, nutrition and healthservices, and even teamsports so they could changetheir lives, and most of all, demonstrate what God’slove really means inconcrete terms.

BCS places a special emphasis on education andencouraging young people. Last year, BCS startedthe Youth Empowered to Succeed Scholarship Fundto help young people who go through its programsto go to college. As a former professor of fivecolleges and head of the United Negro College Fund,I know that the major reason why young peopledon’t continue their education is financial aid.

BCS understands that if you love young folk, if younurture them, if you encourage them and expectthem to succeed you’ve got to give them a platformto higher education. BCS is right – education isabsolutely key. There is nothing more importantthan helping young people get an education. There’s nothing more powerful than transformingpeople’s lives. The problem with so many of us isthat we have become complacent and allowedstereotypes to develop in our media and amongourselves about our youth and about our children:they are all on drugs; they belong to gangs, especially the inner city youth; it’s really hopeless. And we push it off to the government to solve asif the government alone is going to do it.Government programs are important, but theyare not enough by themselves. There must beother assistance.

Therefore the Angel Fund is such an important one. It’s an endowment that will provide $300,000 ayear to BCS to transform people’s lives. What anopportunity. I like the Angel Fund mathematics. You give $2 and you get $1. But we have to raise$3 million dollars to take advantage of thismatch money.

Let me close by simply saying to you, that if allof us pray and ask God for the ability to do whatis right, we can raise the $3 million faster thanthe three years, but only if we remember that it isabout giving someone a lift up. When we transformthe life of an at-risk youth, we transform ourcommunities. And when we transform ourcommunities, we transform our nation, and whenwe transform our nation, we transform the world. That’s the challenge. Let us rise up and meetit together.
