PERFECT HEADS FOR EVERY CAMERA

A perfect combination: The Cine 75 HD with HD camcorder (here with the Varicam from Panasonic).

Information

Page 7: 2007 CAMERA SUPPORT REPORTER LIGHTING

7

An HD feature film shoot with the Cine 75 HD(pictured here with a HDCAM).

CENTER OF GRAVITY HEIGHT

The distance from the camera’scenter of gravity to the top of thefluid head has a decisive effecton the head’s payload. The shorter the distance, the higherthe payload.

THE CAMERA’S CENTER OF GRAVITY

To optimally balance a camera, its center of gravitylength must be situated directly above the fluid head’s center of motion.

Center of gravity height

FUNCTIONAL AND EASY TO OPERATE

Sachtler’s fluid heads offer 100 percent reliability. The

patented damping system excels even when you

and your equipment are challenged by the most

adverse shooting conditions imaginable. Extreme

temperatures have absolutely no effect on our fluid

heads. They provide frictionless operation, are free

of hydraulic oil, and are completely enclosed in their

own capsule against any external influence. A

special feature of the heads is their ease of

operation. Instead of time-consuming adjustment

and re-adjustment in search of the perfect balance,

our fluid heads offer finely-tuned counterbalance for

optimized settings.

STABILITY

A key reason why Sachtler fluid heads function so

reliably is their stability. All components cooperate

in a friction-free environment, a key consideration for

users who want equipment that functions tirelessly

for years to come. In addition, the modern,

lightweight materials we use help you limit the stress

that unnecessary weight can have on your

equipment, especially during long shoots.

THE SECRET BEHIND THE PAYLOAD

The center of gravity height (C.O.G.) of the camera

mounted on a fluid head is decisive in determining the

head’s payload. The C.O.G. describes the distance

between the camera or camcorder’s center of gravity

and the top edge of the fluid head being used. The

shorter the distance, the greater the maximum

camera weight. The C.O.G. tables on the following

product pages show how the payload of a head

changes according to the camera’s center of

gravity height.

WORKMANSHIP

The meticulous quality that is a feature of our

products is due in part to our close working

relationship with film and television professionals. The

regular feedback sent in from the field provides our

engineers with the constant incentive to redesign

even our most proven products. The result is solid,

innovative and extremely reliable products with a

longer than usual life span.

SYSTEMS DESIGNED TO MEET YOUR NEEDS

A fluid head can only be fully effective with the right

pedestal or tripod (see pages 38 to 57). Sachtler

offers a wide range of camera support system

packages (see pages 70 to 73) that are designed to

meet your demands. The systems let operators

choose between differently configured tripods with

e.g. spreaders or mid-level spreaders (see pages

4 to 5). In most cases, a padded bag or cover is

included in the package. Users can also customize

and extend their own systems with optional

accessories, such as additional pan bars or adapters.

THE FILM MAKERS’ PARTNER

Sachtler is a sustaining member of many

different organizations and institutions that

represent and unite camera operators, film

makers and manufacturers of film and broadcast

technology. Membership in the German Society of

Cinematographers (bvk), has put us into direct

contact with all well-known camera operators in the

German speaking world. And our international service

and dealer network puts us into direct contact with

camera operators worldwide. We also exchange

experience with many of the other manufacturers

of broadcast equipment in the International

Association of Broadcast Manufacturers (IABM),

where questions concerning standardization, current

technical trends and developments are discussed.

TECHNICAL OSCAR

The American Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts andSciences has awarded Sachtler a Technical Oscar forits achievements in the area offluid head and camera tripoddevelopment.

LATEST GENERATION

SpeedBalance is the magic brandname for Sachtler’s new fluid head generation that allows for evenfiner counterbalance settings.

FROM FEATHERWEIGHT TO HEAVYWEIGHT

Sachtler offers the ideal tripod for every camera and

camcorder. Whether your equipment weighs just a

few hundred grams, like the digital (Mini)DV

camcorder commonly used in day-to-day news

gathering, or over 50 kg / 110 lb, like many film and

studio cameras loaded with multiple accessories

and high-performance optical systems, we have the

right tripod for you.

Quality leads to success: All Sachtler products are universally ISO 9001 certified

WORKMANSHIP

Every fluid head is a result of extensive handiwork. The head’skey feature – Sachtler damping – is riveted andpermanently sealed for along life span.

Sachtler has been producing fluid heads since 1967. All components are manufactured using highly precise machines, resulting in outstanding reliability and an extremely long life span.Every torsion spring (2nd picture from the left) is intensively tested for defects by stretching it much further than its technically specified limits – thus far beyond its intended daily use.

RECOMMENDED FOR HIGH DEFINITION (HD)

All Sachtler fluid heads are ideal for use with HD

cameras. Some heads, such as the Cine 75 HD

or Cine 30 HD, are particularly user friendly for

classical film camera operators, who find all the

operating controls in their usual place. Of course,

those who shoot with cinematography camcorders

(e.g. Varicam) also want to take advantage of

features such as a viewfinder extension or front box.

Excellent solutions for users of small and lightweight

HDV camcorders, such as the new SpeedBalance

head DV 6 SB are also available. A useful overview

of all our camera support systems can be found on

pages 70 to 73.

SERVICE

Thanks to the worldwide distribution of Sachtler

products, we also offer a widespread service net.

Every authorized dealer is able to carry out

competent repairs or exchange parts. And in acute

situations, Sachtler even provides replacement

tripods or heads. In addition, you can download from

www.sachtler.com – cost-free – user’s manuals for

almost all of the products described in this catalog.

They provide highly detailed technical information,

lists of parts and explosion drawings.

GUARANTEE

Every Sachtler product comes with a comprehensive

guarantee. Thorough quality testing during

and after production ensure problem-free, reliable

operation over a long life span.

– THE NEW GENERATION!A giant leap forward for counterbalance!

SUCCESS PRINCIPLE STEP SWITCHING

The time you take to optimally balance your

camera on the tripod depends on the counterbalance.

At Sachtler, the secret of success is called step

switching. It allows camera operators to optimally

align the fluid head in no time at all. While

continuously adjustable systems often require time-

wasting trial-and-error adjustment, with step switching

the counterbalance is perfectly aligned – first go! And

the best news: Sachtler now offers seven fluid heads

with SpeedBalance.

HIGH PERFORMANCE WITH ENG

All of the SB fluid heads from Sachtler feature

either ten or twelve step counterbalance. This much

finer graduation results in an increased payload

range, thus reducing minimum payload. This

greatly benefits lightweight camcorders such as

those from the DVCAM, HDV and DV classes. Fluid

heads DV 6 SB and DV 8 SB feature 75 mm tripod

connections and are ideal for news gathering. Three

heads – the DV 8/100 SB, DV 12 SB and Video 15

SB – have 100 mm connections and are perfect for

broadcast camcorders such as those from the

DVCPRO, DigiBeta and Editcam classes. New

members of the SpeedBalance family include the

Video 18 SB and Video 20 SB. These heads make

it significantly easier to adjust heavier camcorders.

The Video 18 SB is based on the Video 18, the ENG

head that has sold over 50,000 units worldwide.

AMPLY EQUIPPED

In addition to finer counterbalance, all fluid heads are

fitted with self-illuminated Touch Bubbles that make

balancing in poor light conditions even easier. Fluid

heads DV 12 SB and Video 15 SB also feature tap

holes that let you mount an optional viewfinder

extension adapter. The heads thus do justice to the

increasingly popular “small” HD camcorders, which

achieve film-like quality when fit out with the right cine

accessories. In addition, the Video 15 SB is also

equipped with exchangeable pan arm rosettes.

STEADFAST IN EVERY POSITION

Before our pedestals leave the manufacturing plant, they are subjected towide-ranging operational testing that place them under extreme stress.

Information

Page 37: 2007 CAMERA SUPPORT REPORTER LIGHTING

37

ROBUST AND PROVEN

Sachtler camera tripods have proven themselves

for almost 50 years. Whether in temperatures of

-40 °C / -40 °F or in the desert’s scorching heat – you

can always rely on our camera support systems.

MATERIALS

Sachtler chooses aluminium and carbon fiber for its

tripods. This is because both materials stand out

for their extraordinary resilience and extremely high

safety against rupture. And because carbon fiber

(CF) is exceptionally lightweight, it is the choice of

camera operators who often need to travel. Carbon

fiber has an additional advantage – it is more

pleasant to hold at extremely low temperatures.

FASTENERS

Single extension tripods usually feature a rotary

clamping system that secures each tripod leg in the

required extension position within seconds. Double

extension tripods lock into place in a flash with

Sachtler fast-action clamps, with the help of a lever

specially designed for this purpose. The Speed Lock®

tripod also features an easy-to-use, patented clamping

system. A single release lever operates the two

fasteners on each leg of this double extension tripod.

FITTINGS FOR EVERY HEAD

Depending on payload, Sachtler tripods use different

connections to fit their fluid heads. 75 mm bowls are

usually used with tripods that carry lightweight digital

camcorders. 100 mm fittings are widely used with

tripods in ENG operation. Heavy film and television

cameras mount stably on tripods with 150 mm,

Mitchell or flat base fittings that are easy to convert

for different applications using adapters. Studio

pedestals and OB tripods have flat base connections

for use with studio heads. The Cine Mitchell is used

with fluid heads that have Mitchell base connections.

EASY-TO-OPERATE PEDESTALS

Sachtler studio pedestals make life easy for users.

Camera operators can easily keep the wheel

positions in view at all times and reach all three

wheel brakes from any position. The crab & steer

function enables simple maneuvering with defined

rolling turns, and cable guards protect cables from

damage. Rubber-coated surfaces ensure that you

don’t slip when pushing the pedestal with your

feet, while the trim weights for the column are

covered in plastic to prevent skin contact with the

lead. The Quickfix fitting enables fast and easy

setups. And the highly-flexible C I and C III models

are ideal for small studios and outside shoots.

STABILITY WITH EVERY SHOOT

Working successfully with camera stabilizing systems requires extensive training.

Information

75

When Sachtler’s artemis camera stabilizing system

first premiered at NAB 2001 in Las Vegas, it took the

camera world by storm. With its innovative design

and detailed construction, the system set new

benchmarks in meeting the demand for top-quality

high-definition applications – and still does! Back

then, constructive advice from users quickly led to

far-reaching innovations. Just one year later the

Cine HD and Cine systems hit the market.

IDEAL FOR FILM AND VIDEO

One of the artemis system’s key strengths is it’s

compatibility for both film and video cameras, an

extraordinary feature, as the weight distribution of

these very different cameras varies greatly. For

example, the film camera’s magazine makes it more

rear heavy than a video camera, whose heavy zoom

lenses tend to make it more front-heavy. This results

in completely different counterbalancing needs.

Sachtler meets these different needs through its

unique and patented ‘dual dynamic balance’. It

ensures that all cameras are optimally balanced,

due to the arrangement of the rechargeable batteries,

and especially the ability to freely position the third

rechargeable battery and monitors.

In developing the system, special attention was paid

to the gimbal, the cardan joint, and the heart of any

camera stabilizing system – the connection between

operator and machine. The gimbal features patented

self-centering and fork suspension, whose absolutely

friction-free handling soon inspires a great sense of

trust in the product.

Another innovation is the vest, which guarantees a

perfect fit for men and women alike. Together with

bag manufacturer, Petrol, Sachtler has developed a

lightweight vest that can be adjusted while being

worn. It has the standard American connection, so it

can be used with systems from other manufacturers.

The bridge for the spring arm’s connection is easy to

change from left to right or vice versa. And advanced

safety measures make it impossible for the bridge to

break loose from the vest.

In close cooperation with NHK, a Japanese network

in Tokyo, the artemis EFP Pro had its Japanese

launch in 2003. At that time, HDTV in Japan was

already popular. It was therefore essential that the

control monitor featured both a maximum-quality

HD-SDI signal in and HD-RGB signal processing,

without other components like a downconverter.

Once again, the artemis’ modular construction

enabled Sachtler to quickly deliver the first models to

NHK. Since then, the EFP Pro HD SDI has become

a real ‘cross-over’ model for film and TV.

The artemis EFP is perfect as a relatively affordable

introduction to the demanding professional class.

This system is fully compatible with Cine HD, Cine,

and EFP Pro HD SDI, but has only standard features

for day-to-day broadcast operation.

The newest member of the artemis family is the

artemis DV Pro, which is particularly useful for the

new generation of HD(V) cameras. Handling and

design follow the same procedures and guidelines as

e.g. the Cine HD. This system offers an ideal entry

point to ‘weightless’ operation and makes the later

changes towards the larger artemis systems seem

like child’s play.

Camera operator Curt O.Schaller (2nd from left) waslargely responsible for drawing up the artemis family’s unique design.

LIGHTING FOR MOBILE OPERATION

Information

Page 89: 2007 CAMERA SUPPORT REPORTER LIGHTING

89

Although today’s electronic cameras feature greatly

increased sensitivity, no ENG team can do without

additional lighting. Fill-in lights are often required

to help guests look their best, particularly for

interviews. Sachtler offers an ideally graduated

program of Reporter luminaires, with a choice

between daylight or tungsten lighting and mains or

battery operation.

THE RIGHT LIGHTING FOR EVERY EVENT

All Sachtler luminaires stand out for their ease

of operation. They are robust, silent, and extremely

reliable – even under extreme conditions. Main-

powered tungsten luminaires such as the

Reporter 1000H, 650HS and 300H and daylight

luminaires such as the Reporter 400D, 270DI and

200DI are primarily designed for use with tripods.

Highly-efficient luminaires such as the Reporter

250H and 100H can be handle-operated or mounted

on cameras. Other luminaires such as the Reporter

75H and Reporter 21D MicroSun are also ideal for

use with cameras.

SYSTEM PACKAGES

System packages are available for each Reporter

model. They include up to three luminaires, lamps,

tripods, filters and additional accessories, all

conveniently stored in a compact aluminium case.

The SM models in the Reporter line fit directly, with no need for an adapter.Note: The hot filament of tungsten bulbs is highly susceptible to shock when switched on. For this reason, always use theutmost care in moving lighting stands with tungsten lights that are switched on. HMI/MSR bulbs are far less susceptible to shock.

Vision in focus: The Sachtler AcademyUnlimited potential in the Academy studio

Passion and know-how, enthusiasm and technical

competence – creating films makes many demands

on our talents. The Sachtler Academy assists anyone

who wants to combine his or her ideas and creative

potential with the best equipment available. And for

all camera operators searching for new inspiration

and expert advice. At the Sachtler Academy, practice

and theory go hand in hand.

SACHTLER ACADEMY WITH ITS OWN STUDIO

Sachtler workshops have enhanced professional

competencies for years. The early events, though

held on an irregular basis, were an immediate

success, generating great interest in the industry.

Positive feedback from participants and the huge

demand from all over the world convinced Sachtler’s

Managing Director, Heinz Kossler, to open another

page in the company’s story of success: “Seminars

and workshops have a long tradition at Sachtler,

because technical innovation is always dependent on

gaining the kind of know-how that needs to be

learnt”. The Sachtler Academy officially moved into

its own fully-reconstructed studio at the Sachtler

headquarters in Eching, Southern Germany, on

1 July, 2005. For Heinz Kossler, the Academy is

more than just a place where participants get their

hands on Sachtler products. His vision was to also

create a platform and a forum. “At the Sachtler

Academy, we welcome everyone who wants to

exchange information and ideas with colleagues,

discuss trends and share their knowledge.”

PASSIONATE:

TRAINERS FROM THE FIELD

The trainers at the Sachtler Academy are experts

who share their practical experience with the

participants. Whether it’s optimal light positioning,

camera balancing or increasing HD workflow, the

academy always uses professional resource persons

for its workshops. Marion Ahrensfeld, contact person

at the academy, explains the methodology: “As well

as cooperating with experts in the various theme

areas, we also invite film institutes to work with us.

Some workshops have even been led by Oscar

award winners.” The academy is a place where

know-how meets talent – a platform for the transfer

of knowledge within the branch.

INSPIRING:

EQUIPMENT THAT’S FUN TO USE

The academy’s well-equipped studio stimulates

experimentation. And Sachtler’s cooperation with

other manufacturers means there is a huge range of

equipment that encourages ideas to thrive.

In addition to the complete range of Sachtler camera

support products, participants can look forward to the

most modern cranes and professional camera

stabilizing systems. A three-track curtain system

ensures that the different effects are not just

described in the script, but can also be implemented.

A computer-controlled, complete lighting system

ensures that every shoot appears in its best light.

Studio and reporter luminaires complete the picture,

so no workshop participant need to stay in the dark

– especially in terms of how best to use the equipment.

MOVING:

EXPERIENCES WITH CLOSE-UP EFFECTS

The Academy’s flair attracts newcomers to the branch

and experts alike. Whether involved in talking shop

during training sessions or chatting away during the

coffee pause – this exchange of experience is always

important to the Sachtler Academy. At the same

time, the academy offers practical exercises so that

everyone can put their newly gained knowledge into

practice. Some final praise about the workshops

from a participant: “The workshop has equipped

me with a huge amount of practical experience –

to gather this amount of information myself would

have taken me years”.

At the Sachtler Academy, we address the needs of

the film and media branches and respond to the

latest industry trends. That’s why our workshops

often break new ground in a broad spectrum of

up-to-date themes:

WORKSHOPS ON

CAMERA STABILIZING SYSTEMS

All Sachtler workshops guarantee the best in terms

of know-how. We offer diverse courses to show

participants how to best operate their camera

stabilizing systems. If the focus is on small DV

systems, for example, basic courses are used to

impart the fundamentals, while advanced courses

help jazz up professional know-how. During the

workshops, participants can train using artemis

systems provided specifically for this purpose, but are

also welcome to bring their own equipment.

WORKSHOPS ON LIGHTING:

Using optimized lighting to achieve the right mood or

even to help fade one’s wrinkles, often requires a lot

of experience and practice. Sachtler Academy lighting

workshops offer courses for both beginners and

advanced participants, so that everyone benefits

from gaining experience at their own level.

WORKSHOPS ON BRANCH TRENDS

The Sachtler Academy closely observes the media

branch. It consults people who feel most at home on

the set. This is the only way Sachtler can keep up-to-

date and respond to the latest trends. Workshops on

HD technology or film festivals are the result of

intense Academy ground work.

With first-class trainers, motivated staff and top-

quality equipment, the Sachtler Academy is full of

opportunities to realize dreams and get inspired to do

even better day-to-day shooting. Inside the Sachtler

Academy studio, creativity, know-how and ability

converge – giving participants the benefit of ideas in

motion!
