Welcome back!

STAFF NEWS

We are delighted to welcome back Ms Lara Cameron-Dow from her maternity leave. Lara has most ably taken over the pupil support portfolio on the Eden Road Campus.

HOCKEY TOUR

Our 1st

hockey team are presently on tour in the KZN Midlands this weekend, playing at festivals at Hilton and Michaelhouse. As I will be going to support them, I will unfortunately miss the home rugby fixtures against RBPS on Saturday.

POSITIVE PARENTING

Some thoughts on OVER-PARENTING!

A university dean refers to contemporary students as ‘teacups’ for their fragility in the face of problems.

A question he poses is this: “Could it be that by over-protecting our children from unhappiness, we’re depriving them of happiness as adults?”

Psychiatrist Paul Bohn paraphrased the same point: “Many parents will do anything to avoid having their kids experience even mild anxiety, discomfort or disappointment. Anything less than pleasant – with the result that, as adults, they experience the normal frustrations of life and think that something must be terribly wrong.”

Prepare your child for the road, not the road for your child.

FROM THE HEADMASTER’S DESK

– MICHAEL HOSTY

Congratulations to Jayson Edwards who married Megan James during the school holidays.

Family News

We would like to congratulate Luke Maconachie (Grade 2) on the birth his sister, Eva Sophia on 4 July.

Our sympathy to Warren Viljoen (Grade 4 Class Teacher) whose mother in law passed away on Thursday, to Theo (Grade R), Matthew (Grade 3) and Ben Forsyth (Grade 5) whose maternal grandfather passed away on Tuesday and also to Ethan Sauls (Grade 7) whose paternal grandfather passed away on Thursday. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families.

Dads and Lads All Grades Cycle

We’re just back from our mid-year break so it is time to get back on the bike. The details of the All Grades Dads and Lads Cycle are as follows:

When: 08.30 on 3 August 2014 We will meet and gather and cycling will begin at 09.00. The cycle will last between an hour-and-a -half to two-and-a-half hours. Boerie rolls will be served afterwards. You should be home by lunchtime.

Where: Oak Valley, Elgin

What: Mountain Bike ride for dads and lads. There will be two routes:

Green Route – 14kms for the less energetic dads and the younger boys

Red Route – 24kms for the slightly more experienced

You will need:

Bikes in good working order (I will not be doing any mechanic duty on the day)

Helmets

Something to drink and eat for the duration of the ride

How much: R25 for each dad and R25 for each lad for the boerie rolls and cooldrinks. If you want anything additional for afterwards, please bring your own. R30 permit for each rider at Oak Valley. This is for your own account and is to be paid at the entrance to Oak Valley. Please place the cash for boerie rolls in an envelope with your and your son/s’ name on the envelope, and hand to Karen Jenkins before the end of Tuesday, 29 July 2014. Please do not be late as we will need to know for how many to cater.

A few extra notes:

This will not be a race. It is meant for the enjoyment of the boys and for them to spend time with their dads.

Dads are to be responsible for their own boys. If you transfer that responsibility to another dad, please ensure that he is equipped to deal with it.

The Oak Valley trails are very rideable, but they are technical in some places (particularly the A-frame fence gates). Please take care on the trails and ensure your boys are well looked after in the tricky bits.

We will endeavour to have a trail leader and a trail sweeper, but essentially you must be self-sufficient on the trail.

We will not have exclusive access to the trails, particularly on a Sunday morning, so please make way for faster riders and be aware of their presence.

We cannot arrange for the weather so we will make a call on the Friday if the weather is looking iffy. All cash will be returned in event it is inclement. .

If you have any questions please contact Mike Buckham on 0834629220 or John de Bruyn on 0823711977.

A map to get to Oak Valley can be found at: http://www.oakvalleywines.com/images/contact/map_large.jpg
