Presidents Report

Fellow Members,

As you know, the position of President was not filled at the AGM. After considerable thought I reluctantly decided to offer my services as it is very difficult to run the club with this position vacant. I say reluctantly, not because of any unwillingness to do the job but because there is a possibility of having to work away from Perth sometime this year and I would have preferred someone more certain of their plans to take on the role.

As there were no other nominations we will cross that bridge if and when we come to it.

As from the December GM I am pleased to say the club is now firing on all cylinders and we have an excellent committee to make sure everything runs smoothly.

Trips and Socials are what the club is all about and the coordinators David Peck and Keith Wilcox have been hard at work on this. If you have any favourite places to camp or restaurants to eat at or indeed any other ideas that you think members may be interested in please let us know.

Please consider organizing a social or leading a trip also, assistance is always available and it is a very rewarding contribution to your club. Talk to myself, David, Keith or any of your committee members.

Hope your festive season was more enjoyable than it was for Anne and myself (see electrically challenging report part 2) look forward to seeing you at a Meeting, Trip or Social sometime soon.

TRIP PROMOTIONS/INFORMATION

Trip Coordinators Report January 2008

December has been a quiet month for trips with only the extended trip to Esperance over the New Year period. As I write this (just before the trip) there are eight cars going and we will be staying at a local caravan park. Day trips are planned to some of the national parks in the area as well as visits to the beaches that the area is famous for.

On Sunday 13th January there will be a run down along the south-ern beaches, which is a great chance for new or prospective mem-bers to find out how capable the Subaru is in the sand, and for more experienced members to have some fun.

The Australia day long weekend on January 26th to 28th has been finalised as a trip to Lucky Bay (the one between Geraldton and Kalbarri), check the promo in this month’s magazine for the com-plete details.

February is also a quiet month for trips with an evening beach pic-nic at Wilbinga on Saturday 9th. There is also a long weekend at the beginning of March with a trip planned to Hill River.

The club has decided to renew its adoption of Lochada for another two years and therefore it has been decided that the trip at Easter (which this year is at the end of March) will be back to Lochada.

If you have any ideas for trip destinations please let me or a com-mittee member know.

BEACH RUN 13 JAN 2008

Our annual beach run is on again the second Sunday in January. Again it will be in the area between Tim’s Thicket ( Mandurah end) and Binningup ( Bunbury end). My thought at this point in time is to go down towards the Bunbury end and work our way up.

This run is always a good opportunity to practice some beach sand driving.

Meeting spot: End of Kwinana freeway ( Baldavis Rd) in the vicin-ity of the service station and Fast food outlets. ( if you are not sure ring me)

Meeting time: 9.00am

What to bring: usual picnic lunch, sun protection gear, bathers (if you wish to go for a swim- we will make time for this), tyre gauge and pump ( not needed if you are a visitor or first timer), camera and what ever else you think necessary.

Pets: OK on the beach, but your responsibility.

Difficulty: suitable for everyone, novice upwards.

Finish time : Depends on how much fun we are having, what the weather is like and what you feel like. I would like to be around the Dawesville area by around 3.30pm. If you need to leave early that’s OK too.

LUCKY BAY - Australia Day LWE 26-28 January

Lucky Bay is situated between Port Gregory and Kalbarri about 2 hours north of Geraldton. Camping will be near the beach, which is handy for snorkeling, swimming or fishing. Nearby is an extensive sand dune system on which we will have a play and you may wish to bring a sand board or fly a kite. You may also wish to bring drinks and snacks to watch the sunset.

You will have to bring everything for a camping LWE, as there are no facilities or water at Lucky Bay. It is suitable for camper trailers but not for caravans.

Depart: Saturday morning 7.45am for an 8.00am prompt start

Meet: Gingers Roadhouse (Gull Service Station), Great Northern Highway, Upper Swan

Fuel: Full tank at Gingers, refuel at Geraldton

Bring: Everything for camping, food, water, camera, snorkeling, fishing gear etc.

Cooking: Gas stove or bush wood collected on the way in.

Dogs: OK at camp

Directions to Lucky Bay

For those who want to make their own way there. Drive through Ger-aldton to Northampton, turn left towards Port Gregory ‑ Drive 42 kilo-metres, turn right at the sign to Kalbarri.

Proceed approx 19 kilometres. Turn left, there is a yellow sign on the left hand side of the road making the left hand turn onto a gravel track. A small memorial is on side of road at this turn off. There is also a windmill on the comer.

Drive approximately 1.5 kilometres and turn right. Drive approximately 2.5 kilometres keeping straight on. There is a veer left on the road but keep straight on. (The left hand veer takes you to Lucky Bay town site -Shacks).

Follow the tracks north, after approximately 3‑4 kilometres you are at Lucky Bay.

Lucky Bay is where the reef meets the shoreline it is a protected bay and you will also probably see boats moored in the bay with a back-drop of sand dunes.

If you get lost at all getting to the bay, head West straight to the beach and follow the beach up until you get to where the reef hits the shore-line, the beach is usually driveable!!!

The convoy should get there Saturday afternoon about 3 to 4pm.


Leighton Battery Heritage Site. Sunday February 3rd.

Come and experience some of Western Australia’s WW2 history on a guided tour of the Tunnels on this Heritage site near Fremantle.

Meet, Car park, Boundary Rd Mosman Park.

Time, 1pm, tour starts 1.30, 10 min walk from car park. Duration of tour approx 1hr.

Cost, Adults $7 Children $2.

NOTE. There are no toilets on the Heritage site.

Brookton Old Time Motor Show. Saturday 29th March.

Come along for a day out and enjoy this popular show.

You can camp overnight if you want to stay for the band in the evening or drive back to Perth in about an hour.

SUNSET OVER THE OCEAN AND NIGHT DRIVE

This trip will take in some of the tracks between Two Rocks and Wil-binga; dinner on the beach; sun set over the ocean; drive the tracks back to Wanneroo Road by headlight.

Tides will be favourable so the trip will include a run along the beach.

Sea breeze permitting, dinner will be on the beach otherwise behind a dune.

This trip is suitable for the inexperienced, as well as the experienced driver.

Note the different meeting place. To avoid congestion at the Wan-neroo Shopping Centre, the meeting place has been revised to the 10th Light Horse Heritage Trail starting point located approximately 5km north along Wanneroo Road from the intersection with Joondalup Drive

Date: Saturday 9 February 2008

Meeting place: 10th Light Horse Heritage Trail

Start time: 3.00pm departure

Finish time: Sunset is at 8.13pm. I suggest commenc-ing the drive out at about 9.00pm to get home reasonably early, but this is negotia-ble on the night

Bring: Full tank of fuel, meat, salad, drinks, etc for a picnic dinner or gas cook plate for barbecue dinner

ANZAC LWE TRIP TO THE (NOT SO HIDDEN ANYMORE) BREAKAWAYS

This trip will depart on Friday 25 April (Anzac Day) and return on Sun-day 27 April. “The Breakaways” camp is on the Hyden-Norseman Road approximately 135kms east of Hyden, which is 339kms from Perth via Kondinin, Corrigin and Brookton.

According to Ian Johnson’s spreadsheet listing 25 years of Club trips, the Club has visited this camp 5 times, with the first trip made in March 1986 and the last visit occurring in June 1999. At those times, the Club knew this destination as “Hidden Breakaway”, as it was not all that well known and there were no “improvements” whatsoever.

However, these days, the camp is clearly “on the map” and is a stop-ping spot on the popular Granite and Woodlands Discovery Trail [which we should probably do as a future trip, when we have more time]. The following is an extract from an itinerary from this trip - “On the drive to the next stop [from Hyden], you will start to leave the sandplain land-scape and enter the Woodlands. The Breakaways, is great spot for a picnic. It has picnic facilities, toilets and camping facilities if you want to do this itinerary in two days. Our CEO has camped there a couple of times and always enjoyed the rocks and scenery on show there.”

Well, there you go, the camping spot now has its claim to fame! So, it’s time for the Club to visit again! I’m not sure yet exactly what we will do on the Sunday, but part of the Holland track is a possibility, if there is some interest. Otherwise, there is plenty to see in the area.

Time: 8.15 for 8.30am start.

Bring: A full tank of petrol and all the other usuals for a LWE camping trip with no facilities (except toilet!).

Snorkelling and Breakfast - Sunday 24 February

Come along for a morning swim or snorkel followed by breakfast at Peter and Ursula’s, who live close by.

Where: Mettams Pool, West Coast Hwy/Lynn St., Trigg and afterwards for breakfast at Peter and Ursula Joensson’s 49 Bailey Street, Trigg.

Bring: Snorkel - Mask, fins, togs and sunscreen. Breakfast - BYOE (to be confirmed)

Time: 8.00 am if you like nice calm, clear water, 9.00 am if you prefer windsurfing! 9.30 am for breakfast.

TRIP & SOCIAL REPORTS

Christmas Party – Saturday 8 December 2007

Attendees: lots – 30+ members and 17+ cars – great attendance.

When we arrived, the car park was filling fast, with about 10 cars there already. Useful having a vacant block next door!

We were at the end of a cul-de-sac, with a farm on our right and the relatively new Helena Valley housing subdivision on our left. Robert and Wendy’s house was looking good. Even though they weren’t on, you could clearly see that the front of their house was festooned with lights. Some 10,000.00 of them as I was later to find out!

In we went and through to the back veranda. It was large veranda decked out with 4 tables and lots of chairs. Nibbles were already on the table and people were chatting happily. We joined them.

Some time later, Robert announced that the BBQ was on and meat was soon cooking. With the plentiful salads and side dishes that Wendy had prepared, everyone enjoyed a hearty repast. After dinner, a few members wandered around the back yard looking at the various

plants that filled the space where lawn would normally have been.

It was at this point that I noticed, for the first time, the mass of cables and plug boards sprouting from one wall of Robert’s garage. To me, it looked like an electrician’s worst


nightmare, but Robert assured me it was safe. In any event, it was then that I began to understand the effort involved in rigging the light display.

At about 9.00, the “time” had arrived; time that is for the “sound and light show” to begin and what a performance it was. With music booming from speakers in the front garden and Christmas lights pulsating in rhythm with the music, it really was a great show. We stood watching for what must have been close to half an hour as the computer con-trolled display went through the 5 pro-grammed songs, marvelling at the effort that must have been involved in putting it all to-gether.

After the display had finished, a vote of thanks was presented to Robert and Wendy as was a certain pink cowboy hat that I seem to recall had been given to another member at Christmas in July in Toodyay. It had sequins on the front of the hat that could have doubled for Christmas lights. It seemed an appropriate gift and if any anyone could get the sequins on the hat to light up, I am sure Robert could!

There were no Christmas presents given this year. By agreement, eve-ryone contributed to a donation for the RFDS. A most worthy cause.

A great time was had by all. Many thanks to Robert and Wendy for the fabulous ef-fort they put into the night to make it all happen and thanks also to those who attended.

Electrically challenging report part 2, the saga continues!

You may remember the writings in the December mag about our problem with the GT Forester on the beach near Lancelin. After the most helpful auto leckie replaced the fuse in Lancelin we had no more grief with it which unfortunately makes the problem im-possible to trace apart from inspection of all visible wiring which revealed nothing.

Loaded car and camper to head off to Esperance on Dec27th, bumped over the rail crossing in Maddington and bang goes the fuse. This time, so did the replacement when I fitted it. Bugger! Turn around and go home. At least it didn’t happen out in the wheat belt which was like Dante’s Inferno at the time. Jim Wilcox gave some advice on the phone but to no avail, so whizzed it to Lance auto leckies in Cannington who most obligingly agreed to look at it despite being flat out.

Meanwhile, managed to get Anne’s Physio to check out my back which was giving me the ju jits big time. Bad news, blown a disk (similar to a head gasket) yellow sticker, off the road. Not going anywhere soon. Not shaping up to be a good day. Phoned Les Smith in Esperance to let the group know the bad news. Les in-forms me it is 44 degrees there and he is on his way to the swim-ming pool to avoid being vaporized! Out of all evil some good must come, I am forever hopeful.

The good news came at 4pm, they found the wiring fault, a wire rubbing on a bolt up under the dash had melted, easy to fix, ages to find. Now have a car but can’t go anywhere in it. At least not the distance to Esperance.

On the mend at the time of writing though and should be cleared over the pits in a few days and back in the drivers seat by the General Meeting.

I am always keen to find out more about the Subaru cars and it was by accident that I came across the American site which gives quite a lot of details, but like always not everything comes for nothing anymore. By paying a fee more can be looked at. http://www.subaru.com/ I do not know if you’ve had a good look lately but new models are coming.

Another site I visited was the following http://www.synlube.com/oilfilters.htm and I learned from browsing about the oil filter is when replac-ing you obviously put oil on the seal, but also to fill the filter with oil prior to refitting it (this will help the engine). Little tips like this are useful and per-haps may be able to put in the magazine under a monthly column.

Anyway have a safe and happy season and we will catch up next year.

Major Features

1. Packaging and utility

The new Forester has realized ideal proportions that provide ample interior

space and offer improved utility without substantially enlarging the body size.

• Compared to the previous model, the new Forester is 110 mm taller

(excluding the roof rail) and 45 mm wider, and its wheelbase has been ex-

panded by 90 mm, increasing interior space and improving riding comfort.

On the other hand, the overall distance between the ends of the right and

left door mirrors has been shortened by 10 mm through mirror position

and design changes. Also, the minimum turning radius was made shorter

by 0.1 meter for zippy handling.


• Off-road capability is further improved by optimization of approach and de-

parture angles, coupled with a generous 225-mm ground clearance.1

1. 2.0XT only. The ground clearance on the 2.0X and 2.0XS is 215 mm.

• The double-wishbone rear suspension makes room for a deeper and wider lug-

gage compartment. This enhances the utility of this car that already features

cargo area tie-down hooks and a DC12V/120W power outlet, as well as a

push button switch for folding down the rear seatbacks.

• Larger door openings, which are en-

abled through new sash construction,

afford improved ingress and egress,

and the rear doors open 75 degrees to

allow for better rear seat access.

• Through the enhancement of body

rigidity, less road noise reaches the

interior of the car. All door openings

are sealed with double-layered weather

stripping placed along the door trim

for the optimal pressure to tightly seal

the doors and ensure a quieter ride.

◊ The multi-functional centre console provides a spacious compartment

that can accommodate an A4-size notebook PC and a purse of equivalent

size. It also incorporates a removable tray that can be used to hold port-

able media players and cell phones. The console compartment has a slid-

ing lid that is cushioned on top to serve as an armrest.

� A retractable rear tray with a cup holder is installed between the rear seats,

further elevating rear passenger comfort. (Available on the 2.0XS and

2.0XT)

3. Power units [2.0-L DOHC engines on the 2.0X and 2.0XS]

Powered by regular gasoline, the 2.0-L naturally aspirated Boxer engine fea-

tures better combustion efficiency, as well as eco-friendly performance and fuel

economy, thanks to a newly designed DOHC cylinder head and the use of the

active valve control system (AVCS).

• Fuel economy has been improved with the redesigned DOHC cylinder head,

as well as through optimization of the compression ratio and reduction of

the volume of the combustion chamber.


• Low-end and mid-range torque is improved, while better fuel economy and

lower gas emissions are achieved, primarily through design changes in

the engine that generate a stronger tumble gas flow and raise gas intake

efficiency.

[2.0-L DOHC Turbo engine]

A newly developed DOHC cylinder head is used in this engine. The intake

port and the combustion chamber have been redesigned to reduce residual

gasses, thus raising combustion efficiency.

• By using a resin-based intake manifold, the inner walls of the manifold are

smooth and less resistant to the intake flow. The weight is also reduced

by 30% compared to the earlier manifold.

� A design change in the cooling water channel around the spark plug further

prevents engine knocking and also helps improve low-end and mid-range

torque output.

• The injector nozzle has been redesigned to atomize fuel and finely disperse

it into the combustion chamber for improved combustion. This also helps

reduce harmful substances in emissions.

• Also adopted is a secondary air system that forces air into the exhaust port

to burn out any gasoline remaining in it. The system helps eliminate

harmful substances when the powertrain is still cool, and it promotes

early activation of catalytic converters.

TR attended the December meeting on Monday 17 December (every third Monday – no meeting in January):

- Mark Steels has taken the Land Management position

- Driver training program has been put on hold due to insurance costs & accreditation of drivers needed. (This may effect availability of drivers for next years show).


- A Rating warning to be required on all snatch-straps.

- Sally to stay on as web-manager – requires photos and reports please.

- Donations from the show (Fr:$169,Sa:$270 Su:$383)

- $931 cost for association stickers carried.

- Insurance Banner in mag? Only 1,500 members out of 10,000 have TCIS insurance.

- Trails WA have received funding for WA tracks, including Holland Track.

- Pilbara – 80 mile beach – looking at marine park.

- Peel 4 X 4 has commenced organisation of Night Navigation exer-cise.

- Geoff Cooper from TrackCare spoke to the meeting about the Track Adoption Programme.

- We have stickers to give out.

- We are still looking for a delegate.
